A note on the phonetic evolution of yod-pa-red in Central Tibet.

Despite the current inconsistent spellings such as yod-red (Tournadre 1996: 229-231 et passim, 2003), yog-red (Denwood 1999: 158 et passim), and yoḥo-red (Hu et al. 1989: 64 et passim) of the existential copula and auxiliary verb which is pronounced as yɔɔ ̀ ree ̀ (Chang and Shefts 1964: 15) or yo:re ' (Tournadre 1996: 229-231) there is widespread agreement that yod-pa-red is the etymological origin of this morpheme (Chang and Chang 1968: 106ff, Tournadre 1996: 229). It is regularly spelled yod-pa-red in the newspaper articles collected from the Mi dmaṅs brñan par (人民畫 報 Peoples Pictorial) by Kamil Sedláček (1972, e.g. p. 27, bsam-gyi yod-pa-red ‘he was thinking’). The pronunciation of this auxiliary is not what one would predict from the spelling. In all likelihood it is the frequency and unstressed syntactic position of the word which led to this deviant phonetic development. The existence of studies and handbooks for the language of Lhasa over more than a century permits us to trance the phonetic development of yod-pa-red with surprising precision

Representation and Beyond; Female Victims in Post-Suharto Media

    Get PDF
This study analyses representations of female victims in post-Suharto media. In so doing, it underlines the import of the fall of the New Order regime and the concurrent opening up of the media world in Indonesia. The study is based on notably influential issues that emerged among media producers, feminist activists, social scientists, policy makers, and general audiences during the period of study (1998–2004). Based on observations made in women\u27s NGOs and other institutions concerned with women, interviews and informal conversations with individuals engaged in projects related to female mediation, and content analysis of a large number of mainstream and alternative media presentations, this study finds that the context of the reform (reformasi) in Indonesia constituted a major factor in influencing the changes that affected women and the media, and more importantly, on the burgeoning of the discourse of female victimization. This study also addresses the concepts of ideology, interpellation, identity, and agency to show how the media culture during the reform period, or rather the cultural producers during that time, constructed female victims\u27 identities by sorting out and selecting the representations that represented the context and the history of the regime\u27s chang

New Model-Independent Limit on Muon Substructure

    Get PDF
If the discrepancy between the theoretical and newly measured values of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment is ascribed to muon substructure, there results an improved model--independent limit on its energy scale, 1.2 TeV < Lambda_mu < 3.2 TeV at 95% C.L.Comment: 3 pages, Latex. Revised version places 95% C.L. limits on muon substructure scale. Abstract is modified to reflect this chang

    Articulated elastic-loop roving vehicles

Prototype vehicle features exceptional obstacle-negotiating and slope-climbing capabilities plus high propulsive efficiency. Concept should interest designers of polar or ocean-bottom research vehicles. Also, its large footprint and low ground pressure will minimize ecological damage on terrain with low bearing strength, as in off-the-road application

Sum Formula of Multiple Hurwitz-Zeta Values

    Get PDF
Let s_1,...,s_d be d positive integers and consider the multiple Hurwitz-zeta value zeta(s_1,...,s_d;-1/2,...,-1/2)/2^w where w=s_1+...+s_d is called the weight. For d<n+1, let T(2n,d) be the sum of all these values with even arguments whose weight is 2n and whose depth is d. Recently Shen and Cai gave formulas for T(2n,d) for d<6 in terms of t(2n), t(2)t(2n-2) and t(4)t(2n-4). In this short note we generalize Shen-Cai's results to arbitrary depth by using the theory of symmetric functions established by Hoffman.Comment: 7 page
