We treat Actinote binghamae Dyar, 1913 as a new synonym of Actinote eresia eresina (Hoffer, 1874) n. syn., and treat Altinote santamarta Winhard, 2017 as a subspecies, Actinote trinacria santamarta rev. stat. We illustrate adult specimens of all described taxa of A. pyrrhosticta n. sp., A. eresia (C. Felder & R. Felder, 1862) and A. hilaris Jordan, 1910, and representatives of A. trinacria (C. Felder & R.     Who ate all the pies? The importance of food in the Australian sporting experience

    Australians watch live sport in large numbers and traditionally consume high quantities of meat pies, chips and beer within stadiums. However the food and beverage preferences of stadium-attending Australian sports fans are not well understood, particularly in comparison to their North American and European peers. This paper utilised a survey-based approach to understand the satisfaction of fans of Australia’s national Rugby Union team with stadiums in Australia. While food and beverage offerings were found to be a particular point of dissatisfaction the price and service quality were found to be of greater concern than the healthiness of these. The study also drew on the researchers’ observations and knowledge of recent Australian stadium redevelopments to examine how the traditional offerings may be changing. We conclude that in order to attract greater attendances from a wider market, stadiums in Australia need to provide more varied, higher quality, healthy food and beverage offerings that are both affordable and easy to eat

    Leakage of an invagination pancreaticojejunostomy may have an influence on mortality

    Purpose: No consensus exists regarding the most effective form of pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) following pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Methods: Data were gathered through the American College of Surgeons-National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, Pancreatectomy Demonstration Project. A total of 1781 patients underwent a PD at 43 institutions. After appropriate exclusions, 890 patients were analyzed. Patients were divided into duct-to-mucosa (n = 734, 82%) and invagination (n = 156, 18%) groups and were compared by unadjusted analysis. Type of PJ was included in eight separate morbidity and mortality multivariable analyses. Results: Invagination patients had higher serum albumin (p < 0.01) and lower body mass index (p < 0.01), were less likely to have a preoperative biliary stent (p < 0.01), and were more likely to have a soft gland (p < 0.01). PJ anastomosis type was not associated with morbidity but was associated with mortality (duct-to-mucosa vs. invagination, odds ratio = 0.22, p < 0.01). Among patients who developed a clinically relevant pancreatic fistula, none of the 119 duct-to-mucosa, compared with 5 of 21 invagination, patients died (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Patients who undergo a PJ by duct-to-mucosa or invagination differ with respect to preoperative and intraoperative variables. When an invagination PJ leaks, there may be a greater influence on mortality than when a duct-to-mucosa PJ leaks

    The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Ensemble Spectroscopic Variability of Quasar Broad Emission Lines

    We explore the variability of quasars in the MgII and Hbeta broad emission lines and UV/optical continuum emission using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project (SDSS-RM). This is the largest spectroscopic study of quasar variability to date: our study includes 29 spectroscopic epochs from SDSS-RM over 66 months, containing 357 quasars with MgII and 41 quasars with Hbeta . On longer timescales, the study is also supplemented with two-epoch data from SDSS-I/II. The SDSS-I/II data include an additional 28542854 quasars with MgII and 572 quasars with Hbeta. The MgII emission line is significantly variable (Δf/f\Delta f/f 10% on 100-day timescales), a necessary prerequisite for its use for reverberation mapping studies. The data also confirm that continuum variability increases with timescale and decreases with luminosity, and the continuum light curves are consistent with a damped random-walk model on rest-frame timescales of ≳5\gtrsim 5 days. We compare the emission-line and continuum variability to investigate the structure of the broad-line region. Broad-line variability shows a shallower increase with timescale compared to the continuum emission, demonstrating that the broad-line transfer function is not a δ\delta-function. Hbeta is more variable than MgII (roughly by a factor of 1.51.5), suggesting different excitation mechanisms, optical depths and/or geometrical configuration for each emission line. The ensemble spectroscopic variability measurements enabled by the SDSS-RM project have important consequences for future studies of reverberation mapping and black hole mass estimation of 1<z<21<z<2 quasars.Comment: 20 pages, 25 figures.     In August 2002, the near-Earth asteroid 2002 NY40, made its closest approach to the Earth. This provided an opportunity to study a near-Earth asteroid with a variety of instruments. Several of the telescopes at the Maui Space Surveillance System were trained at the asteroid and collected adaptive optics images, photometry and spectroscopy. Analysis of the imagery reveals the asteroid is triangular shaped with significant self-shadowing. The photometry reveals a 20-hour period and the spectroscopy shows that the asteroid is a Q-type

    Measurements of Relative Phase in Binary Mixtures of Bose-Einstein Condensates

    We have measured the relative phase of two Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) using a time-domain separated-oscillatory-field condensate interferometer. A single two-photon coupling pulse prepares the double condensate system with a well-defined relative phase; at a later time, a second pulse reads out the phase difference accumulated between the two condensates. We find that the accumulated phase difference reproduces from realization to realization of the experiment, even after the individual components have spatially separated and their relative center-of-mass motion has damped.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    The Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transients (CRAFT) survey

    We are developing a purely commensal survey experiment for fast (<5s) transient radio sources. Short-timescale transients are associated with the most energetic and brightest single events in the Universe. Our objective is to cover the enormous volume of transients parameter space made available by ASKAP, with an unprecedented combination of sensitivity and field of view. Fast timescale transients open new vistas on the physics of high brightness temperature emission, extreme states of matter and the physics of strong gravitational fields. In addition, the detection of extragalactic objects affords us an entirely new and extremely sensitive probe on the huge reservoir of baryons present in the IGM. We outline here our approach to the considerable challenge involved in detecting fast transients, particularly the development of hardware fast enough to dedisperse and search the ASKAP data stream at or near real-time rates. Through CRAFT, ASKAP will provide the testbed of many of the key technologies and survey modes proposed for high time resolution science with the SKA.Comment: accepted for publication in PAS
