A new heap game
Given heaps of tokens. The moves of the 2-player game introduced
here are to either take a positive number of tokens from at most heaps,
or to remove the {\sl same} positive number of tokens from all the heaps.
We analyse this extension of Wythoff's game and provide a polynomial-time

On non-measurable sets and invariant tori
The question: "How many different trajectories are there on a single
invariant torus within the phase space of an integrable Hamiltonian system?" is
posed. A rigorous answer to the question is found both for the rational and the

Construction and Expected Performance of the Hadron Blind Detector for the PHENIX Experiment at RHIC
A new Hadron Blind Detector (HBD) for electron identification in high density
hadron environment has been installed in the PHENIX detector at RHIC in the
fall of 2006. The HBD will identify low momentum electron-positron pairs to
reduce the combinatorial background in the mass spectrum, mainly
in the low-mass region below 1 GeV/c. The HBD is a windowless
proximity-focusing Cherenkov detector with a radiator length of 50 cm, a CsI
photocathode and three layers of Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM). The HBD uses
pure CF as a radiator and a detector gas. Construction details and the

A chemical screen identifies small molecules that regulate hepcidin expression
AbstractHepcidin, a peptide hormone produced in the liver, decreases intestinal iron absorption and macrophage iron release via effects on ferroportin. Bone morphogenic protein and Stat3 signaling regulate Hepcidin's transcription. Hepcidin is a potential drug target for patients with iron overload syndromes because its levels are inappropriately low in these individuals. To generate a tool for identifying small molecules that modulate Hepcidin expression, we stably transfected human hepatocytes (HepG2) cells with a reporter construct containing 2.7kb of the human Hepcidin promoter upstream of a firefly reporter gene. We used high throughput methods to screen 10,169 chemicals in duplicate for their effect on Hepcidin expression and cell viability. Regulators were identified as chemicals that caused a change >3 standard deviations above or >1 standard deviation below the mean of the other chemicals (z-score >3 or <1), while not adversely affecting cell viability, quantified by fluorescence assay. Following validation assays, we identified 16 chemicals in a broad range of functional classes that promote Hepcidin expression. All of the chemicals identified increased expression of bone morphogenic protein-dependent and/or Stat3-dependent genes, however none of them strongly increased phosphorylation of Smad1,5,8 or Stat3
Design, Construction, Operation and Performance of a Hadron Blind Detector for the PHENIX Experiment
A Hadron Blind Detector (HBD) has been developed, constructed and
successfully operated within the PHENIX detector at RHIC. The HBD is a
Cherenkov detector operated with pure CF4. It has a 50 cm long radiator
directly coupled in a window- less configuration to a readout element
consisting of a triple GEM stack, with a CsI photocathode evaporated on the top
surface of the top GEM and pad readout at the bottom of the stack. This paper
gives a comprehensive account of the construction, operation and in-beam

this equation.

Pion-nucleus reactions in a microscopic transport model
We analyse pion-nucleus reactions in a microscopic transport model of the BUU
type, which propagates nucleons, pions, deltas and N(1440)-resonances
explicitly in space and time. In particular we examine pion absorption and
inelastic scattering cross sections for pion kinetic energies T(pi) =85-315MeV
and various target masses. In general, the mass-dependence of the experimental
data is well described for energies up to the delta-resonance (\approx 160 MeV)
while the absorption cross sections are somewhat overestimated for the higher
energies. In addition we study the possible dynamical effects of delta- and
pion-potentials in the medium on various observables as well as alternative

Hyper- and hypo- nutrition studies of the hepatic transcriptome and epigenome suggest that PPARα regulates anaerobic glycolysis
Diet plays a crucial role in shaping human health and disease. Diets promoting obesity and insulin resistance can lead to severe metabolic diseases, while calorie-restricted (CR) diets can improve health and extend lifespan. In this work, we fed mice either a chow diet (CD), a 16 week high-fat diet (HFD), or a CR diet to compare and contrast the effects of these diets on mouse liver biology. We collected transcriptomic and epigenomic datasets from these mice using RNA-Seq and DNase-Seq. We found that both CR and HFD induce extensive transcriptional changes, in some cases altering the same genes in the same direction. We used our epigenomic data to infer transcriptional regulatory proteins bound near these genes that likely influence their expression levels. In particular, we found evidence for critical roles played by PPARα and RXRα. We used ChIP-Seq to profile the binding locations for these factors in HFD and CR livers. We found extensive binding of PPARα near genes involved in glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and uncovered a role for this factor in regulating anaerobic glycolysis. Overall, we generated extensive transcriptional and epigenomic datasets from livers of mice fed these diets and uncovered new functions and gene targets for PPARα
Modification of the rho meson detected by low-mass electron-positron pairs in central Pb-Au collisions at 158 A GeV/c
We present a measurement of pair production in central Pb-Au
collisions at 158 GeV/. As reported earlier, a significant excess of the
pair yield over the expectation from hadron decays is observed. The
improved mass resolution of the present data set, recorded with the upgraded
CERES experiment at the CERN-SPS, allows for a comparison of the data with
different theoretical approaches. The data clearly favor a substantial
in-medium broadening of the spectral function over a density-dependent
shift of the pole mass. The in-medium broadening model implies that
baryon induced interactions are the key mechanism to in-medium modifications of
the -meson in the hot fireball at SPS energy.Comment: Revised versio
