Interaction of TIS and ST in environmental matters
The role of TIS concerning environmental matters in view of the SAPOCO 42 document will be tackled. Interactions between TIS and ST, as the Division managing water networks, ventilation systems and various potentially polluting installations, will be discussed both for the planning as well as for the operational phase. A systematic approach to the problem within the foreseen CERN-wide Environmental Management System will be described
Monte Carlo simulation of muon-induced background of an anti-Compton gamma-ray spectrometer placed in a surface and underground laboratory
Simulations of cosmic ray muon induced background of an HPGe detector placed inside an anti-Compton shield on the surface and in shallow underground is described. Investigation of several model set-ups revealed some trends useful for design of low-level gamma-ray spectrometers. It has been found that background spectrum of an HPGe detector can be scaled down with the shielding depth. No important difference is observed when the same set-up of the anti-Compton spectrometer is positioned horizontally or vertically. A cosmic-muon rejection factor of at least 40 (at around 1 MeV) can be reached when the anti-Compton suppression is operational. The cosmicmuon background can be reduced to such a level that other background components prevail, like those from the residual contamination of the detector and shield materials and/or from radon, especially for the underground facilities

Models for environmental impact assessments of releases of radioactive substances from CERN facilities
The document describes generic models for environmental impact assessments of releases of radioactive substances from CERN facilities. Except for few models developed in the Safety Commission, the models are based on the 1997 Swiss directive HSK-R-41 and on the 2001 IAEA Safety Report No. 19. The writing style is descriptive, facilitating the practical implementation of the models at CERN. There are four scenarios assumed for airborne releases: (1) short-term releases for release limit calculations, (2) actual short-term releases, (3) short-term releases during incidents/accidents, and (4) chronic long-term releases during the normal operation of a facility. For water releases, two scenarios are considered: (1) a release into a river, and (2) a release into a water treatment plant. The document shall be understood as a reference for specific environmental studies involving radioactive releases and as a recommendation of the Safety Commission

An actively vetoed Clover gamma-detector for nuclear astrophysics at LUNA
An escape-suppressed, composite high-purity germanium detector of the Clover
type has been installed at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics
(LUNA) facility, deep underground in the Gran Sasso Laboratory, Italy. The
laboratory gamma-ray background of the Clover detector has been studied
underground at LUNA and, for comparison, also in an overground laboratory.
Spectra have been recorded both for the single segments and for the virtual
detector formed by online addition of all four segments. The effect of the
escape-suppression shield has been studied as well. Despite their generally
higher intrinsic background, escape-suppressed detectors are found to be well
suited for underground nuclear astrophysics studies. As an example for the
advantage of using a composite detector deep underground, the weak ground state
branching of the Ep = 223 keV resonance in the 24Mg(p,gamma)25Al reaction is
determined with improved precision.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables; as accepted by Eur. Phys. J.
New isotope technologies in environmental physics
As the levels of radionuclides observed at present in the environment are very low, high sensitive analytical systems are required for carrying out environmental investigations. We review recent progress which has been done in low-level counting techniques in both radiometrics and mass spectrometry sectors, with emphasis on underground laboratories, Monte Carlo (GEANT) simulation of background of HPGe detectors operating in various configurations, secondary ionisation mass spectrometry, and accelerator mass spectrometry. Applications of radiometrics and mass spectrometry techniques in radioecology and climate change studies are presented and discussed as well. The review should help readers in better orientation on recent developments in the field of low-level counting and spectrometry, and to advice on construction principles of underground laboratories, as well as on criteria how to choose low or high energy mass spectrometers for environmental investigations
