    We empirically examine some listed Chinese firms’ political connection, ownership, and financing constraints. Politically-connected firms display no financing constraints whereas firms without connection experience significant constraints.     Financial liberalization and financing constraints: some evidence from panel data of listed Chinese firms

    This paper examines the impact of recent financial liberalization in China on the financing constraints and investment of publicly-listed Chinese firms. Two continuous indices are constructed to measure the evolution and intensity of financial reforms: a financial liberalization index and a capital control index. Dynamic panel GMM method is used to estimate firms’ financing constraints in an Euler-equation investment model. The results indicate that while smaller firms face significant financing constraints than larger firms, financial liberalization has raised the financing constraints for the latter and failed to relieve the constraints for the former. It appears financial reforms in China have subjected larger firms to greater market discipline but the reforms probably have not been profound enough to benefit smaller firms.Financial liberalization; investments; financing constraints; Chinese firms

    Amiodarone-Induced Pulmonary Toxicity - A Frequently Missed Complication.

    IntroductionAmiodarone is often used in the suppression of tachyarrhythmias. One of the more serious adverse effects includes amiodarone pulmonary toxicity (APT). Several pulmonary diseases can manifest including interstitial pneumonitis, organizing pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, diffuse alveolar hemorrhage, pulmonary nodules or masses, and pleural effusion. Incidence of APT varies from 5-15% and is correlated to dosage, age of the patient, and preexisting lung disease.DescriptionA 56-year-old male with a past medical history of coronary artery disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was admitted for a coronary artery bypass graft. Post-operatively, the patient was admitted to the ICU for ventilator management and continued to receive his home dose of amiodarone 400 mg orally twice daily, which he had been taking for the past 3 months. The patient was found to be hypoxemic with a PaO2 52 mmHg and bilateral infiltrates on chest x-ray. Patient also complained of new onset dyspnea. Physical exam found bilateral rhonchi with bibasilar crackles and subcutaneous emphysema along the left anterior chest wall. Daily chest x-rays showed worsening of bilateral interstitial infiltrates and pleural effusions. A chest high-resolution computed tomography on post-operative day 3 showed extensive and severe bilateral ground glass opacities. APT was suspected and amiodarone was discontinued. A course of oral prednisone without antibiotics was initiated, and after one week of treatment the chest film cleared, the PaO2 value normalized and dyspnea resolved.DiscussionAPT occurs via cytotoxic T cells and indirectly by immunological reaction. Typically the lungs manifest a diffuse interstitial pneumonitis with varying degrees of fibrosis. Infiltrates with a 'ground-glass' appearance appreciated on HRCT are more definitive than chest x-ray. Pulmonary nodules can be seen, frequently in the upper lobes. These are postulated to be accumulations of amiodarone in areas of previous inflammation. Those undergoing major cardiothoracic surgery are known to be predisposed to APT. Some elements require consideration: a baseline pulmonary function test (PFT) did not exist prior. APT would manifest a restrictive pattern of PFTs. In APT diffusing capacity (DLCO) is generally >20 percent from baseline. A DLCO was not done in this patient. Therefore, not every type of interstitial lung disease could be ruled out. Key features support a clinical diagnosis: (1) new dyspnea, (2) exclusion of lung infection, (3) exclusion of heart failure, (4) new radiographic features, (5) improvement with withdrawal of amiodarone. Our case illustrates consideration of APT in patients who have extensive use of amiodarone and new onset dyspnea

    Regional Capital Mobility in China: 1978-2006

    We examine cross-region capital mobility in China and track how the degree of mobility has changed over time. The effects of fiscal and redistributive activities of different levels of government in China on private capital mobility are taken into account. Our results indicate that there was a significant improvement in capital mobility over time in China, particularly for private capital in the more developed regions. The central and provincial governments, via their taxation, spending, and transfers, loosen the relationship between private saving and investment and appear to promote capital mobility, particularly for less developed regions. There are considerable differences between more and less developed regions in terms of the degree of capital market integration and the improvement in capital mobility over time. The results have important policy implications on global re-balancing as well as regional development gap and risk-sharing within China.Feldstein-Horioka; Chinese cross-region capital mobility; saving-investment relationship; Chinese capital market integration

    Direct angiotensin AT2 receptor stimulation using a novel AT2 receptor agonist, compound 21, evokes neuroprotection in conscious hypertensive rats

    Background: In this study, the neuroprotective effect of a novel nonpeptide AT2R agonist, C21, was examined in a conscious model of stroke to verify a class effect of AT2R agonists as neuroprotective agents. Methods and Results: Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were pre-treated for 5 days prior to stroke with C21 alone or in combination with the AT2R antagonist PD123319. In a separate series of experiments C21 was administered in a series of 4 doses commencing 6 hours after stroke. A focal reperfusion model of ischemia was induced in conscious SHR by administering endothelin-1 to the middle cerebral artery (MCA). Motor coordination was assessed at 1 and 3 days after stroke and post mortem analyses of infarct volumes, microglia activation and neuronal survival were performed at 72 hours post MCA occlusion. When given prior to stroke, C21 dose dependently decreased infarct volume, which is consistent with the behavioural findings illustrating an improvement in motor deficit. During the pre-treatment protocol C21 was shown to enhance microglia activation, which are likely to be evoking protection by releasing brain derived neurotrophic factor. When drug administration was delayed until 6 hours after stroke, C21 still reduced brain injury. Conclusion: These results indicate that centrally administered C21 confers neuroprotection against stroke damage. This benefit is likely to involve various mechanisms, including microglial activation of endogenous repair and enhanced cerebroperfusion. Thus, we have confirmed the neuroprotective effect of AT2R stimulation using a nonpeptide compound which highlights the clinical potential of the AT2R agonists for future development

    Damage tolerance in filament-wound graphite/epoxy pressure vessels

    Graphite/epoxy composites are extensively used in the aerospace and sporting goods industries due to their superior engineering properties compared to those of metals. However, graphite/epoxy is extremely susceptible to impact damage which can cause considerable and sometimes undetected reduction in strength. An inelastic impact model was developed to predict damage due to low-velocity impact. A transient dynamic finite element formulation was used in conjunction with the 3D Tsai-Wu failure criterion to determine and incorporate failure in the materials during impact. Material degradation can be adjusted from no degradation to partial degradation to full degradation. The developed software is based on an object-oriented implementation framework called Extensible Implementation Framework for Finite Elements (EIFFE)

    Impact on Student Attitudes through Participation in Interprofessional Student Teams at a Remote Area Medical Event in Rural Appalachia

    Interprofessional teamwork is being adopted as the best way to care for patients, but it is also important to determine how future healthcare providers view this model of patient care. What are their attitudes and beliefs after having the opportunity to work in an interprofessional team? The primary objective of this study was to determine changes in health profession students’ attitudes toward interprofessional collaboration through participation in a Remote Area Medical (RAM) event in rural Appalachia. Researchers hypothesized that working in interprofessional teams positively impacts students’ attitudes toward interprofessional practice. To explore these variables, RedCap was utilized to collect demographic information, generate a pre/post survey matching code, and administer previously validated interprofessional education (IPE) questionnaires to RAM clinic student volunteers (representing five ETSU health sciences colleges and various undergraduate programs) before and after the event. Students were allowed to voluntarily complete the pre-survey online prior to participating in the event or at sign-in and the post-survey at sign-out or online after the event. The Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education-Revised Instrument, Version 2 (SPICE-R2), which is validated for use in pre- and post-surveys, utilized 5-point Likert-type questions (strongly disagree to strongly agree) to evaluate students’ perceptions of their role on the team and the team’s impact on healthcare and patient outcomes. The Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Scale-Revised (ICCAS-R), which is only validated for use in post-surveys, required students to simultaneously evaluate their ability to perform tangible interprofessional team skills before and after the event using 5-point Likert-type questions (poor to excellent). At the event, students were placed into interprofessional teams to provide care to patients. Faculty members from a variety of professions provided leadership to the teams and guidance as needed. The pre-survey had 107 responses and the post-survey had 108 responses. However, after matching the pre- and post-surveys with student-generated codes, there were 70 valid matched responses. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 25. There were no statistically significant changes in SPICE-R2 IPE constructs from the pre-survey to post-survey. However, high pre-survey scores indicated that this student cohort already had a high level of appreciation for interprofessional teams, with mean scores of 4.5 out of 5 for teamwork, 4 out of 5 for roles and responsibilities, and 4.36 out of 5 for healthcare outcomes. The mean overall composite score on the ICCAS-R increased from 3.65 out of 5 on the pre-event portion to 4.03 out of 5 on the post-event portion (p \u3c 0.001) , indicating that students increased their self-evaluated ability to perform tangible skills used in the interprofessional team through participation in the RAM clinic. Findings of this research may allow educators in both classroom and healthcare settings to better understand how hands-on IPE experiences influence students’ interprofessional attitudes and beliefs
