    Statistical analysis of soy cultivation in Argentina

    Argentina are analyzed. The main objective is to obtain information that will be useful for the analysis of the environmental consequences of the progress of this crop in the country. This has been made by a descriptive statistical analysis and a factor analysis was used to identify factors which characterize the soybean crop and also a classification or clustering between provinces with similar characteristics. The information parameters studied were: the tendency and dispersion measures for soybean yield of 15 provinces in which it was grown between the 2001/02 and 2010/11 or from 2001/02 to 2010/11; the correlations between area harvested acreage, seeded area, production and performance, and the factors that bind some variables that characterize the soybean crop that allows a grouping between provinces with similar characteristics. Analyses were performed by using data obtained from: 1) MinAgri (last 10 seasons) b) 2001 National Census c) CNA 2002.     [ES] El artículo presenta el planteamiento, desarrollo y resultados del proyecto “MUDETRAD. Arquitectura vernácula en los pueblos mudéjares de Zaragoza”, que los autores llevan desarrollando desde 2019, de la mano de la asociación Territorio Mudéjar. Se trata de un proyecto que pretende aproximarse a la arquitectura tradicional de esta zona de una forma integral: primero, registrando cómo está construida, cómo la perciben quienes conviven con ella y cómo está siendo intervenida; en segundo lugar, realizando un trabajo de divulgación y concienciación sobre su importancia y sus valores; y, por último, buscando herramientas que hagan compatible su conservación con la dinamización económica del territorio. Centrado inicialmente en 14 localidades, se ha ido ampliando hasta abarcar en 2022 un total de 41 municipios repartidos por toda la provincia.     Gene Expression Analyses in Non Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer Reveals a Role for Alternative Splicing and Tp53 Status

    Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) represents a crucial problem for the national health care systems due to its high rates of recurrence and the consequent need of frequent follow-ups. Here, gene expression analyses in patients diagnosed as NMIBC were performed to determine those molecular pathways involved in tumor initiation, finding that both MYC and E2F are up regulated and helps to tumor initiation and progression. Our results also support an important involvement of alternative splicing events, modifying key pathways to favour bladder tumor evolution. Finally, since MDM2 showed differential exon usage, mutations in TP53 and its protein expression have been also studied in the same patients. Our data support that recurrence is epigenetically mediated and favoured by an increase protein expression of TP53, which appears more frequently mutated in advanced stages and grades, being associated to a worse prognosis. Therefore, TP53 mutational status could be used as a potential biomarker in the first stages of NMIBC to predict recurrence and prognosis.We express our deepest acknowledgement to patients and their families.     Gender influence on work satisfaction and leadership for medical oncologists: a survey of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM)

    Gènere; Enquesta; OncologiaGénero; Encuesta; OncologíaGender; Survey; OncologyBackground Women represent an increasing proportion of the oncology workforce; however, globally this does not translate into leadership roles, reflecting disparities in career opportunities between men and women. The Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) undertook a survey to investigate gender disparity in the Spanish oncology context. Design An online survey was made available to SEOM medical oncologists between February and May 2019. It included demographics, professional context and achievements, parenthood and family conciliation issues, workplace gender bias, and approaches to address disparities. Results Of the 316 eligible respondents, 71.5% were women, 59.5% were aged 45 or younger, and 66.1% had children. Among women, 12.4% were division or unit heads, compared with 45.5% of men, with most women (74.3%) being attending medical oncologists, compared with 45.5% of men. More males were professors (34.4% versus 14.2% of females), had a PhD (46.7% versus 28.8%), and/or had led clinical research groups (41.1% versus 9.7%). Spending time overseas after completing a residency was also more common for men than women (34.4% versus 20.4%). Professional satisfaction was similar between genders, driven primarily by patient care and intellectual stimulation. More women (40.7%) considered parenthood to have a strong negative impact on their career, compared with men (9.0%). Main perceived barriers to gender equality included a lack of work–life balance (72.6% women, 44.4% men), bias of peers and superiors (50.0% women, 18.9% men), and different career goals (41.2% women, 24.4% men). Preferred solutions included educational programs and scholarships (52.9%), communication and leadership training (35.8%), childcare at conferences (33.2%), and postmaternity return-to-work incentives (32.0%). Conclusion There is a clear paucity of equal opportunities for female oncologists in Spain. This can be addressed by encouraging professional development and merit recognition particularly for younger female oncologists, and empowering women to be involved in management and leadership of institutions and professional societies.This study was funded by the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) (no grant number)

    Accelerated oxygen-induced retinopathy is a reliable model of ischemia-induced retinal neovascularization

    Retinal ischemia and pathological angiogenesis cause severe impairment of sight. Oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) in young mice is widely used as a model to investigate the underlying pathological mechanisms and develop therapeutic interventions. We compared directly the conventional OIR model (exposure to 75% O-2 from postnatal day (P) 7 to P12) with an alternative, accelerated version (85% O-2 from P8 to P11). We found that accelerated OIR induces similar pre-retinal neovascularization but greater retinal vascular regression that recovers more rapidly. The extent of retinal gliosis is similar but neuroretinal function, as measured by electroretinography, is better maintained in the accelerated model. We found no systemic or maternal morbidity in either model. Accelerated OIR offers a safe, reliable and more rapid alternative model in which pre-retinal neovascularization is similar but retinal vascular regression is greater

    V-shaped pyranylidene/triphenylamine-based chromophores with enhanced photophysical, electrochemical and nonlinear optical properties

    We report the synthesis and comprehensive study of two chromophores based on 4H-pyranylidene moiety as a part of the p-conjugated spacer. Triphenylamine (TPA) acts as donor and tricarbonitrile-based electron-accepting groups complete these V-shaped D-A-D architectures (A, acceptor; D, donor). Their electrochemical, photophysical and nonlinear optical properties are analyzed in detail by using a joint experimental and theoretical approach. The two chromophores exhibit near-infrared fluorescence, large Stokes shift, enhanced emission in tetrahydrofuran/water mixtures and good photostability. Additionally, the dimerization of triphenylamine groups to tetraphenylbenzidine (TPB) takes place upon electrochemical and chemical oxidation showing their peculiar electrochemical behavior and film formation capabilities. Interestingly, high molecular first hyperpolarizabilities and two-photon absorption cross-sections were found, highlighting their potential applications in electro-optical devices. Overall, our work demonstrates that these near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent chromophores are versatile materials with a myriad of applications ranging from optoelectronics to biological applications. © 2021 The Royal Society of Chemistry

    Non-Linear Numerical Models for Predicting the Bond Strength of Fibre-Reinforced Concrete at High Temperatures

    The steel to concrete bond mechanism is critical to address the behaviour of reinforced concrete structural members. Although this mechanism can be compromised during a fire, it may be one of the least researched phenomena in concrete technology and is not addressed in the design codes and standards. In this work, we present a thorough review of the experimental data available on this topic, focusing on fibre-reinforced concrete. The data allow us to study the evolution of the bond strength as a function of three variables: the exposure temperature, the type of fibre and the volume fraction. A linear multiple regression is initially carried out, followed by a series of non-linear numerical models. These models are built using a methodology based on the finite element method combined with the formulation of the Galerkin method. The numerical models have been developed for different degrees of complexity. The error measurements obtained with the linear regression and the numerical models are compared in order to present a prediction model. The selected model is then validated for different values of the independent variables. This process supports the discussion of the influence that the independent variables have in the evolution of the bond strength between steel reinforcement and fibre-reinforced concretes exposed to high temperatures.The authors want to acknowledge Generalitat Valenciana, which has made possible this piece of research through the grant GV/2018/015

    Prevalence and correlates of frailty in an older rural African population:findings from the HAALSI cohort study

    Background: Frailty is a key predictor of death and dependency, yet little is known about frailty in sub-Saharan Africa despite rapid population ageing. We describe the prevalence and correlates of phenotypic frailty using data from the Health and Aging in Africa: Longitudinal Studies of an INDEPTH Community cohort. Methods: We analysed data from rural South Africans aged 40 and over. We used low grip strength, slow gait speed, low body mass index, and combinations of self-reported exhaustion, decline in health, low physical activity and high self-reported sedentariness to derive nine variants of a phenotypic frailty score. Each frailty category was compared with self-reported health, subjective wellbeing, impairment in activities of daily living and the presence of multimorbidity. Cox regression analyses were used to compare subsequent all-cause mortality for non-frail (score 0), pre-frail (score 1–2) and frail participants (score 3+). Results: Five thousand fifty nine individuals (mean age 61.7 years, 2714 female) were included in the analyses. The nine frailty score variants yielded a range of frailty prevalences (5.4% to 13.2%). For all variants, rates were higher in women than in men, and rose steeply with age. Frailty was associated with worse subjective wellbeing, and worse self-reported health. Both prefrailty and frailty were associated with a higher risk of death during a mean 17 month follow up for all score variants (hazard ratios 1.29 to 2.41 for pre-frail vs non-frail; hazard ratios 2.65 to 8.91 for frail vs non-frail). Conclusions: Phenotypic frailty could be measured in this older South African population, and was associated with worse health, wellbeing and earlier death
