Innovative promotional contents in film mega franchises: the web page of The Hobbit (2014)
entretenimiento interactivo (visitas virtuales y videojuegos).
Film mega franchises hyperfragment the stories with the aim of increase the
number of productions and, when this via is depleted, they explore other parts
of the fictional universe. Therefore film mega franchises arise, such as Peter
Jackson's Middle-earth, which accumulate various trilogies and need more
ambitious methods of promotion that increase the synergies between each
production. With regard to this need, websites have experienced significant
technological development that enables new formats and communicative
proposals to be explored. For the purpose of detecting innovative promotional
texts a content analysis of the official website for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five
Armies (2014) has been carried out, which is aimed at detecting the links
established between different parts (hypertextuality) and the various interactive
proposals. The results obtained show a new generation of promotional
contents characterized for: surpassing the film paratext and stimulating other
film of the same fictional world, the complete trilogy or saga, in general; and
being configured as software in order to foster customization and interactive
entertainment (virtual tours and video games). In contrast, these contents do
not use any social network complement which facilitates the interaction
between different users, thereby becoming relegated to be simply shared in the
social profiles of users
Transmedia strategies in TV series: the transformation of a tie-in website in the beginning of an ARG (case Discover Westworld)
The implementation of transmedia strategies for the promotion of TV series has changed the use of web pages, thus transforming them into spaces capable of creating stories which expand the fictional universes. These websites, mainly known as tie-in websites, may also be part of a more ambitious transmedia strategy: an alternate reality game (ARG). For the purpose of exploring this strategy, it has been undertaken a semiopragmatic analysis of Discover Westworld, a tie-in website linked to the TV series Westworld which, subsequently, has resulted in the beginning of a promotional ARG. The analysis explores the nature of the communicative spaces where this strategy is implemented, the involvement and the participation of users in creating meanings of the communicative proposals and the links established by these proposals with the different parts of this TV series. The results show that this strategy is entirely developed in digital communicative spaces in order to enable users to fully experience and become part of the story. Likewise, the communicative proposals of these digital spaces allow users to both interact and customize some content, and variously participate in constructing the story. Finally, within these communicative spaces there are paratexts, that provide direct promotional links with the first season; and hypertexts, that promote the series by expanding its fictional universe, which, once the first season has finished, in turn, might be considered as hypotexts that serve as textsbridge for promoting a future production of this series. The implementation of transmedia strategies for the promotion of TV series has changed the use of web pages, thus transforming them into spaces capable of creating stories which expand the fictional universes.
Se trata de las webs oficiales de Oz The Great and Powerful (Raimi, 2013), Interstellar (Nolan, 2014) y The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Jackson, 2014).
