Trawl fishery is a mixed fishery targeting numerous species and sizes simultaneously, and therefore remains a controversial fishing method due to consequential catch of huge amount of non-targeted species. Along with non-commercial species, bycatch also includes commercial species that are below minimum legal size (MLS) or less profitable fishes owing to market conditions. Advanced technologies in fishing methods and fleet infrastructure are being introduced and practiced. Such developments have ensued in heavy exploitation of juveniles of commercially important fishes. Mangaluru fisheries harbour witnessed an average 168 thousand tonnes (t) of trawl landings/year in 2012-14, of which 133 thousand t (79 %) was retained for edible purpose and 0.35 thousand t (21 %) was marked as “low value bycatch” (LVB) which mainly transported as raw material for fish meal production. To assess the sustainability of marine fisheries production, it is important to understand the species composition and the juvenile composition of the fishes in LVB. A total of 121 species of finfishes were recorded from LVB of multiday trawlers (MDT). Among that, commercially important juveniles formed 47.5 % of the finfish LVB by weight (56.1 % by number). An estimated 4,693.4 t (272.4 million by numbers) of Decapterus russelli juveniles, 1,395.7 t (144.9 million by numbers) of Saurida tumbil, 1,671.4 t (142.9 million by numbers) of Rastrelliger kanagurta and 338.3 t (90.1 million by numbers) of Nemipterus randalli were landed as LVB per year by multiday trawlers. From the results it is evident that marine fisheries will be in serious threat in successive years if the similar trend continues. The study strongly advocates LVB management through adoption of Juvenile Fish Excluder-Shrimp Sorting Device (JFE-SSD) and reduced effort in critical fishing grounds would bring down the damages to the marine ecosystems

Trawling remains a controversial method of fishing due to the poor selectivity of trawl net and catching of hugequantity and diversity of non target fishes. By-catch is recognised as an unavoidable portion of fish catch but quantity variesaccording to the type of gear operated. FAO has considered the resource damage due to discarding of by-catch as serious issue.Mangalore fisheries harbour is one among the major fishing harbours of Karnataka state with its significant contribution tothe Trawl landings. The study was conducted to assess the recourse damage due to indiscriminate fishing and landing of juveniles of commercially important species in low value by-catch due to smaller size and improper handling. The quantity of lowvalue by-catch was estimated from the landings of single-day and multi-day trawler landings for the period of August 2012 toMay 2013. The quantity of low value by-catch (trash fish) generated by trawlers of Mangalore was estimated as 32,426 t (19%of the total trawl catch). A total 121 species of finfishes belonging to 55 families have been identified constituting the low valueby-catch. Order Perciformes contributed 61.16 per cent (74 species) to the total number of species, followed by Clupeiformesand other groups, whereas the family Carangidae contributed 11.57 per cent (14 species) to the total number of species, followedby Engraulidae and other families. Presence of wide diversity of finfishes in low value by-catch showed an alarming signal of fisheries resource damage

Background. Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a rare autoimmune blistering skin disease in the elderly and it is manifested by cutaneous blisters on the skin lesions. The objective was to emphasize the rare case of BP. Methods. A case report of BP in a 58-year-old male patient admitted to a dermatology ward is presented. Results. A 58-year-old male patient with complaints of fluid-filled skin lesions, was examined initially over the trunk, gradually progressed involving B/L upper and lower extremities. Even though the patient was treated with the recommended therapy of corticosteroid (Dexamethasone) along with adjuvant drugs, new skin lesions continued to develop, and the patient’s condition worsened. The Prednisolone was started in place of Dexamethasone on the fifth day of treatment at its higher dose (50mg/day), the Prednisolone proved its efficacy to combat the extensive condition of BP. Conclusions. Bullous pemphigoid is a distressing blistering skin disease. Untreated disease is often fatal because of the susceptibility to infection and fluid-electrolyte disturbances. The mortality of patients with bullous pemphigoid has been significantly reduced with the advent of new therapies and treatment modalities. The treatment with systemic and topical corticosteroids forms the mainstay of treatment along with other adjuvant drugs. In the present case study, the use of Prednisolone has proven its efficacy in the extensive disease state of BP and improved the patient’s quality of life

Automatic Fire Extinguisher System with Safety Features for Vehicles

This project is aimed to prevent vehicles from fire explosions. In this project we used sensor, pipe valve, Fire extinguisher and Arduino. The sensor and pipe valve are placed in near the areas where there is a possible to catch on fire. The sensor and valve are connected to the Arduino and the valve is also connected to the fire extinguisher. Arduino is powered by separate battery. The working of the project is like whenever the fire is detected by the sensor, it transmits the signal to the Arduino and the Arduino transmit signal to the valve which is placed near to that fire. While doing this process, the Arduino unlock the central lock system of the vehicle and disconnect the battery to prevent the spreading of fire. For that we use separate battery for the Arduino. And also we use wi-fi module which send alert message to the fire station about the fire

Co-Creation of Breast Cancer Risk Communication Tools and an Assessment of Risk Factor Awareness: A Qualitative Study of Patients and the Public in India.

BACKGROUND: Low awareness of BC and its associated risk factors causes delays in diagnosis and impacts survival. It is critical to communicate BC risk to patients in a format that they are easily able to understand. Our study aim was to develop easy-to-follow transmedia prototypes to communicate BC risk and evaluate user preferences, alongside exploring awareness of BC and its risk factors. METHODS: Prototypes of transmedia tools for risk communication were developed with multidisciplinary input. A qualitative in-depth online interview study was undertaken using a pre-defined topic guide of BC patients (7), their relatives (6), the general public (6), and health professionals (6). Interviews were analyzed using a thematic approach. FINDINGS: Most participants preferred pictographic representations (frequency format) of lifetime risk and risk factors and storytelling using short animations and comic strips (infographics) for communicating genetic risk and testing: "In a short time, they explained it very well, and I liked it". Suggestions included minimizing technical terminology, decreasing the delivery speed, "two-way dialogue", and using local "language for different locations". There was low awareness of BC, with some understanding of age and hereditary risk factors but limited knowledge of reproductive factors. INTERPRETATION: Our findings support use of multiple context-specific multimedia tools in communicating cancer risk in an easy-to-understand way. The preference for storytelling using animations and infographics is a novel finding and should be more widely explored

Scanned Probe Oxidation onp-GaAs(100) Surface with an Atomic Force Microscopy

Locally anodic oxidation has been performed to fabricate the nanoscale oxide structures onp-GaAs(100) surface, by using an atomic force microscopy (AFM) with the conventional and carbon nanotube (CNT)-attached probes. The results can be utilized to fabricate the oxide nanodots under ambient conditions in noncontact mode. To investigate the conversion of GaAs to oxides, micro-Auger analysis was employed to analyze the chemical compositions. The growth kinetics and the associated mechanism of the oxide nanodots were studied under DC voltages. With the CNT-attached probe the initial growth rate of oxide nanodots is in the order of ~300 nm/s, which is ~15 times larger than that obtained by using the conventional one. The oxide nanodots cease to grow practically as the electric field strength is reduced to the threshold value of ~2 × 107 V cm−1. In addition, results indicate that the height of oxide nanodots is significantly enhanced with an AC voltage for both types of probes. The influence of the AC voltages on controlling the dynamics of the AFM-induced nanooxidation is discussed

Dental cell type atlas reveals stem and differentiated cell types in mouse and human teeth

Understanding cell types and mechanisms of dental growth is essential for reconstruction and engineering of teeth. Therefore, we investigated cellular composition of growing and non-growing mouse and human teeth. As a result, we report an unappreciated cellular complexity of the continuously-growing mouse incisor, which suggests a coherent model of cell dynamics enabling unarrested growth. This model relies on spatially-restricted stem, progenitor and differentiated populations in the epithelial and mesenchymal compartments underlying the coordinated expansion of two major branches of pulpal cells and diverse epithelial subtypes. Further comparisons of human and mouse teeth yield both parallelisms and differences in tissue heterogeneity and highlight the specifics behind growing and non-growing modes. Despite being similar at a coarse level, mouse and human teeth reveal molecular differences and species-specific cell subtypes suggesting possible evolutionary divergence. Overall, here we provide an atlas of human and mouse teeth with a focus on growth and differentiation. Unlike human teeth, mouse incisors grow throughout life, based on stem and progenitor cell activity. Here the authors generate single cell RNA-seq comparative maps of continuously-growing mouse incisor, non-growing mouse molar and human teeth, combined with lineage tracing to reveal dental cell complexity.Peer reviewe
