A ground system for early forest fire detection based on infrared signal processing
This article presents a ground remote automatic system for forest surveillance based on infrared signal processing applied to early fire detection. Advanced techniques, which are based on infrared signal processing, are used in order to process the captured images. With the aim of determining the presence or absence of fire, the system performs the fusion of different detectors that exploit different expected characteristics of a real fire, such as persistence and increase. Theoretical simulations and practical results are presented to corroborate the control of the probability of false alarm. Results in a real environment are also presented to authenticate the accuracy of the operation of the proposed system. In particular, some experiments have been done to evaluate the delay of the system (tens of seconds on average) in detecting a controlled ground fire in a range of 1-10 km. Moreover, temporary evolution of false alarms and true detections are presented to evaluate the long-term performance of the system in a real environment. We have reached a detection probability of 100% at a false alarm rate of around 1 x 10(-9).This work has been supported by Generalitat Valenciana, under grant GVEMP06/001, and by MEC under the FPU programme.Bosch Roig, I.; Gómez, S.; Vergara Domínguez, L. Spatial genetic structure in the saddled sea bream (Oblada melanura [Linnaeus, 1758]) suggests multi-scaled patterns of connectivity between protected and unprotected areas in the Western Mediterranean Sea
Marine protected areas (MPAs) and networks of MPAs are advocated worldwide for the achievement of marine conservation objectives. Although the knowledge about population connectivity is considered fundamental for the optimal design of MPAs and networks, the amount of information available for the Mediterranean Sea is currently scarce. We investigated the genetic structure of the saddled sea bream ( Oblada melanura) and the level of genetic connectivity between protected and unprotected locations, using a set of 11 microsatellite loci. Spatial patterns of population differentiation were assessed locally (50-100 km) and regionally (500-1000 km), considering three MPAs of the Western Mediterranean Sea. All values of genetic differentiation between locations (Fst and Jost's D) were non-significant after Bonferroni correction, indicating that, at a relatively small spatial scale, protected locations were in general well connected with non-protected ones. On the other hand, at the regional scale, discriminant analysis of principal components revealed the presence of a subtle pattern of genetic heterogeneity that reflects the geography and the main oceanographic features (currents and barriers) of the study area. This genetic pattern could be a consequence of different processes acting at different spatial and temporal scales among which the presence of admixed populations, large population sizes and species dispersal capacity, could play a major role. These outcomes can have important implications for the conservation biology and fishery management of the saddled sea bream and provide useful information for genetic population studies of other coastal fishes in the Western Mediterranean Sea
Anomaly and Condensate in the Light-Cone Schwinger Model
The axial anomaly and fermion condensate in the light cone Schwinger model
are studied following path integral methods. This formalism allows for a simple
and direct calculation for these and other vacuum dependent phenomena.Comment: 10pp, Revte
Using the Generic Synteny Browser (GBrowse_syn)
Genome Browsers are software that allow the user to view genome annotations in the context of a reference sequence, such as a chromosome, contig, scaffold, etc. The Generic Genome Browser (GBrowse) is an open-source genome browser package developed as part of the Generic Model Database Project (see UNIT ; Stein et al., 2002). The increasing number of sequenced genomes has led to a corresponding growth in the field of comparative genomics, which requires methods to view and compare multiple genomes. Using the same software framework as GBrowse, the Generic Synteny Browser (GBrowse_syn) allows the comparison of colinear regions of multiple genomes using the familiar GBrowse-style Web page. Like GBrowse, GBrowse_syn can be configured to display any organism, and is currently the synteny browser used for model organisms such as C. elegans (WormBase; http://www.wormbase.org; see UNIT 1.8) and Arabidopsis (TAIR; http://www.arabidopsis.org; see UNIT 1.1). GBrowse_syn is part of the GBrowse software package and can be downloaded from the Web and run on any Unix-like operating system, such as Linux, Solaris, or MacOS X. GBrowse_syn is still under active development. This unit will cover installation and configuration as part of the current stable version of GBrowse (v. 1.71)
Optically probing symmetry breaking in the chiral magnet Cu2OSeO3
We report on the linear optical properties of the chiral magnet Cu2OSeO3,
specifically associated with the absence of inversion symmetry, the chiral
crystallographic structure, and magnetic order. Through spectroscopic
ellipsometry, we observe local crystal-field excitations below the
charge-transfer gap. These crystal-field excitations are optically allowed due
to the lack of inversion symmetry at the Cu sites. Optical polarization
rotation measurements were used to study the structural chirality and magnetic
order. The temperature dependence of the natural optical rotation, originating
in the chiral crystal structure, provides evidence for a finite
magneto-electric effect in the helimagnetic phase. We find a large
magneto-optical susceptibility on the order of V(540nm)~10^4 rad/(T*m) in the
helimagnetic phase and a maximum Faraday rotation of ~165deg/mm in the
ferrimagnetic phase. The large value of V can be explained by considering spin
cluster formation and the relative ease of domain reorientation in this
metamagnetic material. The magneto-optical activity allows us to map the
magnetic phase diagram, including the skyrmion lattice phase. In addition to
this, we probe and discuss the nature of the various magnetic phase transitions
in Cu2OSeO3.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
