Life Cycle Assessment of Novel Aircraft Interior Panels Made from Renewable or Recyclable Polymers with Natural Fiber Reinforcements and Non-Halogenated Flame Retardants
A comprehensive life cycle assessment of panels for aircraft interiors was conducted, including both a conventional glass fiber-reinforced panel and different novel sustainable panels. The conventional panel is made of a glass fiber-reinforced thermoset composite with halogenated flame retardant, whereas the sustainable panels are made of renewable or recyclable polymers, natural fiber reinforcements, and nonhalogenated flame retardants. Four different sustainable panels were investigated: a geopolymer-based panel; a linseed-oil–based biopolymer panel; and two thermoplastic panels, one with polypropylene (PP) and another with polylactic acid (PLA). All of the sustainable panels were developed to fulfil fire resistance requirements and to be lighter than the conventional panels in order to reduce fuel consumption and air pollutant emissions from the aircraft. The environmental impacts associated with energy consumption and air emissions were assessed, as well as other environmental impacts resulting from the extraction and processing of materials, transportation of materials and waste, panel manufacturing, use, maintenance, and end of life (EoL). All the sustainable panels showed better environmental performance than the conventional panel. The overall impacts of the sustainable panels were offset by the environmental benefits in the use stage attributed to weight reduction. One square meter of the novel panels could save to 6,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents. The break-even point (in months) at which the use of sustainable panels would yield an environmental benefit relative to the impacts arising in production and EoL was as follows: 1.2 for the geopolymer panel; 1.7 for the biopolymer panel; 10.4 for the PLA panel; and 54.5 for the PP panel. This research is part of the project CAYLEY, which was co-funded by the Eco-innovation Initiative of the European Union with contract no. Increased Amygdala Activations during the Emotional Experience of Death-Related Pictures in Complicated Grief: An fMRI Study
Complicated grief (CG) is associated with alterations in various components of emotional
processing. The main aim of this study was to identify brain activations in individuals diagnosed
with CG while they were observing positive, negative, and death-related pictures. The participants
included 19 individuals with CG and 19 healthy non-bereaved (NB) individuals. Functional magnetic
resonance imaging (fMRI) scans were obtained during an emotional experience task. The perception
of death-related pictures differed between the CG group and the NB group, with a greater activation
in the former of the amygdala, putamen, hypothalamus, middle frontal gyrus, and anterior cingulate
cortex. Amygdala and putamen activations were significantly correlated with Texas Revised Inventory
of Grief scores in the CG group, suggesting that the higher level of grief in this group was associated
with a greater activation in both brain areas while watching death-related pictures. A significant
interaction between image type and group was observed in the amygdala, midbrain, periaqueductal
gray, cerebellum, and hippocampus, largely driven by the greater activation of these areas in the CG
group when watching death-related pictures and the lower activation when watching positive-valence
pictures. In this study, individuals with CG showed significantly distinct brain activations in response
to different emotional images. This research was supported by CEI-BioTic (University of Granada), Grant number: CEI2014-MPBS34.

Standard indicators for the social appropriation of science: Lessons learned.
This book is the result of a two-and-a-halfyear
close collaboration between the seven
partners of the Erasmus+ KA203 project
“Knowledge, beliefs, perceptions about the
science of European students (Persist_EU)”. One of the project’s main objectives was to
develop a tool to evaluate European students’
initial knowledge when configuring their beliefs
and perceptions about different science topics.
Once the tool (platform) had been designed,
the next step consisted of carrying out activities
(Science camps), which would allow validating
the platform and identifying changes in
perception (through questionnaires with Likert
scales), which students experienced during
their participation in training activities, organised
within the framework of the project. For this, five
Science camps were organised in five European
universities, two in central Europe (Germany,
Slovakia), and three nations in southern
Europe (Portugal, Spain and Italy). Therefore,
we make sure to cover differences related to
socio-geopolitical issues. The topics that were
chosen for the debate were climate change,
genetically-modified organisms (GMOs),
complementary and alternative medicines
(CAM) and vaccines, and it was expected
that around 100 students would participate in
each of the universities of the PERSIST_EU
consortium (Valencia, Karlsruhe Institute of
Technology, Trnava, Lisbon, and Vicenza).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Relationship between serum cobalamin concentration and endoscopic ileal appearance and histology in dogs with chronic inflammatory enteropathy
Abstract Background It has not been determined whether ileal appearance differs among dogs with chronic inflammatory enteropathy (CIE) and different serum concentrations of cobalamin. Objective To compare endoscopic and histologic ileal findings in dogs with CIE and different serum cobalamin concentrations and then evaluate the correlation of ileal changes to cobalamin serum concentration using updated scoring systems to assess the ileum. Animals Sixty‐eight dogs with CIE. Methods Retrospective study. Frequency of ileal features and ileal histologic and endoscopic scores (IHS and IES) were obtained and compared among CIE dogs with severe hypocobalaminemia (SHC; 350 ng/L). The correlation of IHS and IES with cobalamin was evaluated. Results Friability, villus atrophy, crypt dilatation, epithelial injury, and intraepithelial lymphocytes were more frequent in SHC than in NC dogs (all P ≤ .01). Median SHC‐IES (2; range, 0‐4) was higher than NC‐IES (1; range, 0‐5; P = .004). Median SHC‐IHS (6; range, 3‐9) was higher than HC‐IHS (4; range, 1‐7; P 350 ng/L in CIE dogs. With updated scales to assess the mucosa, greater ileal damage was associated with lower serum cobalamin concentration
