    Amoebic liver abscess in the medical emergency of a North Indian hospital

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Amoebic Liver abscess although fairly common in developing countries, yet, there is limited data on the clinical presentation to the emergency department. A retrospective analysis of 86 indoor cases of Amoebic Liver Abscess presenting to the emergency department over a 5-year period was carried out.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>The mean age of patients was 40.5 ± 2.1 years (male-female ratio = 7:1). Fever, pain abdomen and diarrhea were seen in 94%, 90% and 10.5% respectively. Duration of symptoms less than 2 weeks was seen in 48% cases. Hepatomegaly was present in 16% cases only, a right sided pleural effusion in 14% cases and ascites in 5.7%. On ultrasound, a right lobe abscess was seen in 65%, a left lobe abscess in 13% and multiple abscesses in both the lobes in 22% cases. Seventy one cases underwent per-cutaneous pigtail catheter drainage for a mean period of 13.4 ± 0.8 days. The mortality rate was 5.8%. On multivariate regression and correlation analysis, a higher number of inserted pigtail catheters correlated to mortality.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Amoebic liver abscess presents commonly to the emergency department and should be suspected in persons with prolonged fever and pain abdomen. Conservative management for uncomplicated amoebic liver abscess and insertion of single per-cutaneous pigtail catheter drainage for complicated amoebic liver abscess are efficacious as treatment modalities.</p

    Automated home waste segregation and management system

    Waste management is a massive issue in India, most of the present systems cannot manage waste on a scalable level, thus creating pressure on the ecosystem. Before the elimination of waste, segregation needs to be done to manage individual types of waste. Hence taken the same approach to solving the problem, which most of the present-day systems fail to do. The goal is to segregate the garbage generated in individual households into solid, liquid, biodegradable, non-biodegradable, combustible, and non-combustible, using many subsystems that involve electro pneumatics, compression, and storage. Image processing techniques will further advocate the process. The desired system will further reduce the waste of an in-built pulverizer. After conducting in-depth research on the present solutions for the urban waste processing chain, the level of complexity increases as the waste goes further along the chain and, in the end, the only option left is incineration was figured out. The solution allows endpoints of the chain to process different types of garbage in a more organized fashion. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is solid waste that results from municipal community, commercial, institutional, and recreational activities.     XWikiGen: Cross-lingual Summarization for Encyclopedic Text Generation in Low Resource Languages

    Lack of encyclopedic text contributors, especially on Wikipedia, makes automated text generation for low resource (LR) languages a critical problem. Existing work on Wikipedia text generation has focused on English only where English reference articles are summarized to generate English Wikipedia pages. But, for low-resource languages, the scarcity of reference articles makes monolingual summarization ineffective in solving this problem. Hence, in this work, we propose XWikiGen, which is the task of cross-lingual multi-document summarization of text from multiple reference articles, written in various languages, to generate Wikipedia-style text. Accordingly, we contribute a benchmark dataset, XWikiRef, spanning ~69K Wikipedia articles covering five domains and eight languages. We harness this dataset to train a two-stage system where the input is a set of citations and a section title and the output is a section-specific LR summary. The proposed system is based on a novel idea of neural unsupervised extractive summarization to coarsely identify salient information followed by a neural abstractive model to generate the section-specific text. Extensive experiments show that multi-domain training is better than the multi-lingual setup on average

    Characterization of Tomato Leaf Curl New Delhi Virus infecting cucurbits: Evidence for sap transmission in a host specific manner

    Sponge gourd (Luffa cylindrica) is an economically important vegetable crop cultivated throughout India and this crop is severely affected by yellow mosaic disease caused by begomovirus. In this study, an attempt was made to transmit the begomovirus by sap. The causal agent was easily transmitted by sap to ridge gourd, sponge gourd and Nicotiana  benthamiana. Several factors affecting the efficient sap transmission of causal virus was identified. Use of two antioxidant (sodium sulphite and ÎČ-mercaptoethanol) and two abrasive (celite and corborundum) and application of inoculum on first true leaves and cotyledons by rubbing with cotton swab, dipped in inoculum resulted in significant higher rate of transmission. The sap inoculation protocol resulted in variable percentage of infected plants from different factors like buffer combinations, source of inoculum, age of inoculum, genotypes of test plants, and species of plants, temperature, seasons and organic materials. The most susceptible growth stage of ridge gourd plant to sap inoculation was seven days old seedlings that produced 100% infection. The sap transmission was confirmed by coat protein gene polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification, cloning and sequencing from infected plants.     World Society for Virology first international conference: Tackling global virus epidemics

    This communication summarizes the presentations given at the 1st international conference of the World Society for Virology (WSV) held virtually during 16–18 June 2021, under the theme of tackling global viral epidemics. The purpose of this biennial meeting is to foster international collaborations and address important viral epidemics in different hosts. The first day included two sessions exclusively on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19. The other two days included one plenary and three parallel sessions each. Last not least, 16 sessions covered 140 on-demand submitted talks. In total, 270 scientists from 49 countries attended the meeting, including 40 invited keynote speakers.Peer reviewe

    Assessment of biomass energy potential for SRC willow woodchips in a pilot scale bubbling fluidized bed gasifier

    The current study investigates the short rotation coppice (SRC) gasification in a bubbling fluidized bed gasifier (BFBG) with air as gasifying medium. The thermochemical processes during combustion were studied to get better control over the air gasification and to improve its effectiveness. The combustion process of SRC was studied by different thermo-analytical techniques. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were performed to examine the thermal degradation and heat flow rates. The product gas composition (CO, CO2, CH4 and H2) produced during gasification was analyzed systematically by using an online gas analyzer and an offline GC analyzer. The influence of different equivalence ratios on product gas composition and temperature profile was investigated during SRC gasification. TG/DTG results showed degradation occur in four stages; drying, devolatilization, char combustion and ash formation. Maximum mass loss ~70% was observed in devolatilization stage and two sharp peaks at 315–500 °C in TG/DSC curves indicate the exothermic reactions. The temperature of gasifier was increased in the range of 650–850 °C along with the height of the reactor with increasing equivalent ratio (ER) from 0.25 to 0.32. The experimental results showed that with an increment in ER from 0.25 to 0.32, the average gas composition of H2, CO, CH4 decreased in the range of 9–6%, 16–12%, 4–3% and CO2 concentration increased from 17 to 19% respectively. The gasifier performance parameters showed a maximum high heating value (HHV) of 4.70 MJ/m3, Low heating value (LHV) of 4.37 MJ/m3 and cold gas efficiency (CGE) of 49.63% at 0.25 ER. The ER displayed direct effect on carbon conversion efficiency (CCE) of 95.76% at 0.32 ER and tar yield reduced from 16.78 to 7.24 g/m3 with increasing ER from 0.25 to 0.32. All parametric results confirmed the reliability of the gasification process and showed a positive impact of ER on CCE and tar yield

    Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV

    We present the first measurement of directed flow (v1v_1) at RHIC. v1v_1 is found to be consistent with zero at pseudorapidities η\eta from -1.2 to 1.2, then rises to the level of a couple of percent over the range 2.4<∣η∣<42.4 < |\eta| < 4. The latter observation is similar to data from NA49 if the SPS rapidities are shifted by the difference in beam rapidity between RHIC and SPS. Back-to-back jets emitted out-of-plane are found to be suppressed more if compared to those emitted in-plane, which is consistent with {\it jet quenching}. Using the scalar product method, we systematically compared azimuthal correlations from p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions.
