    Associations between anthropometric indicators of adiposity and body fat percentage in normal weight young adults

    The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the associations between various anthropometric adiposity screening indices and body fat percentage estimated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A total of 186 (95 male and 91 female) normal weight (body mass index [BMI] = 18.5- 24.9 kg/m2) young adults (mean age= 20.96 ± 2.03 years) were measured on body fat percentage, body height, body mass, waist and hip circumferences. Abdominal volume index, body adiposity index, BMI, body roundness index, conicity index, reciprocal ponderal index, waist to height ratio, waist to height 0.5 ratio, and waist to hip ratio were calculated accordingly. Results revealed significant gender effects in all main anthropometric measurements. Except for waist to hip ratio, results indicated significant associations between anthropometric indices and BIA in both male and female participants. BIA results were found to be largely associated with BMI and abdominal volume index in both genders. BlandAltman analysis showed good agreements between these indices and BIA. Considerable associations and agreements highlight the potential importance and the use of several anthropometric proxies to estimate body adiposity among male and female non-overweight/obese young adults. Despite continuing discussion regarding its accuracy, BMI seems to be useful for monitoring body adiposity within this cohort

    Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), such as MoS2 and WS2, have recently emerged as nanomaterials with potential use in biomedicine. An attractive means to favor their interaction with biological media is the use of proper biomolecules as exfoliating/dispersing agents. Here, MoS2 flakes were stabilized with different small functional biomolecules such as adenosine monophosphate (AMP), guanosine monophosphate (GMP) and flavin mononucleotide (FMN) through the strong nucleotide-MoS2 interaction of Lewis acid-base type, rather than just on the weak dispersive and hydrophobic forces commonly associated with the use of many surfactants. The impact of the nucleotide-stabilized MoS2 flakes on the viability and cell proliferation, on the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and on the preosteoblast differentiation process (early stage) has been also evaluated, as well as the incorporation and intracellular localization of the nanomaterials by MC3T3-E1 and Saos-2 cells. The nucleotide-stabilized MoS2 flakes were found to exhibit excellent biocompatibility. Furthermore, their incorporation did not affect the integrity of the cell plasma membrane, which makes them ideal candidates for delivering drug/gene directly into cells. The in vitro cell response of tumor cells to these nanomaterials differs from that of undifferentiated cells, which provides the basis for their potential use in cancer therapy.publishe

    Data filtering in the readout of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter

    For an efficient data taking, the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) data of the CMS experiment must be limited to 10\% of the full event size (1MB). Other requirements limit the average data size to 2kB per data acquisition link. These conditions imply a reduction factor of close to twenty on the data collected. The data filtering in the readout of the ECAL detector is discussed. Test beam data are used to study the digital filtering applied in the readout channels and a full detector simulation allows to estimate the energy thresholds to achieve the desired data suppression factor

    A comparison of production control systems in a flexible flow shop

    Production control in make-to-order must address the companies’ need for short delivery times and on-time deliveries. Several production control systems may be used to meet these needs. This paper presents a simulation study to evaluate the delivery performance of the TKS, GKS and POLCA production co ntrol systems, in the context of a make-to-order flexible flow shop. Since TKS is used for make-to-stock manufacturing, an adaptation of it is made to use in make-to-order. Results of a simulation study show that the adapted TKS outperforms POLCA, but performs worse than GKS.
