Machine learning techniques to select Be star candidates. An application in the OGLE-IV Gaia south ecliptic pole field
Statistical pattern recognition methods have provided competitive solutions
for variable star classification at a relatively low computational cost. In
order to perform supervised classification, a set of features is proposed and
used to train an automatic classification system. Quantities related to the
magnitude density of the light curves and their Fourier coefficients have been
chosen as features in previous studies. However, some of these features are not
robust to the presence of outliers and the calculation of Fourier coefficients
is computationally expensive for large data sets. We propose and evaluate the
performance of a new robust set of features using supervised classifiers in
order to look for new Be star candidates in the OGLE-IV Gaia south ecliptic
pole field. We calculated the proposed set of features on six types of variable
stars and on a set of Be star candidates reported in the literature. We
evaluated the performance of these features using classification trees and
random forests along with K-nearest neighbours, support vector machines, and
gradient boosted trees methods. We tuned the classifiers with a 10-fold
cross-validation and grid search. We validated the performance of the best
classifier on a set of OGLE-IV light curves and applied this to find new Be
star candidates. The random forest classifier outperformed the others. By using
the random forest classifier and colour criteria we found 50 Be star candidates
in the direction of the Gaia south ecliptic pole field, four of which have
infrared colours consistent with Herbig Ae/Be stars. Supervised methods are
very useful in order to obtain preliminary samples of variable stars extracted
from large databases. As usual, the stars classified as Be stars candidates
must be checked for the colours and spectroscopic characteristics expected for
them
Plasma streams in the Hermean dayside magnetosphere: Solar wind injection through the reconnection region
International audienceThe aim of this research is to simulate the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetic field of Mercury and to study the particle fluxes between the magnetosheath and the planet surface. We simulate the magnetosphere structure using the open source MHD code PLUTO in spherical geometry with a multipolar expansion of the Hermean magnetic field (Anderson, B. J. et al, 2012). We perform two simulations with realistic solar wind parameters to study the properties of a plasma stream originated in the reconnection region between the interplanetary and the Hermean magnetic field. The plasma precipitates along the open magnetic field lines to the planet surface showing a fast expansion, rarefaction and cooling. The plasma stream is correlated with a flattening of the magnetic field observed by MESSENGER due to the adjacency of the reconnection region where the solar wind is injected to the inner magnetosphere
Lameness, often associated with polyarthritis, is one of the most frequent clinical signs observed in dogs with leishmaniasis. The pathogenesis of these joint disturbances is not well known.Even the presence of the parasite in the joint sometimes may explain the observed alteration, the pathogenic effect triggered by the deposition of circulating immunocomplexes (CIC) that are afien produced in dogs with Cl, should also be considered. The present paper reviews the literature and compares our clinical case with others reported, thus, discussing the possible aetiology of these arthropathies
Towards Autopoietic Computing
A key challenge in modern computing is to develop systems that address
complex, dynamic problems in a scalable and efficient way, because the
increasing complexity of software makes designing and maintaining efficient and
flexible systems increasingly difficult. Biological systems are thought to
possess robust, scalable processing paradigms that can automatically manage
complex, dynamic problem spaces, possessing several properties that may be
useful in computer systems. The biological properties of self-organisation,
self-replication, self-management, and scalability are addressed in an
interesting way by autopoiesis, a descriptive theory of the cell founded on the
concept of a system's circular organisation to define its boundary with its
environment. In this paper, therefore, we review the main concepts of
autopoiesis and then discuss how they could be related to fundamental concepts
and theories of computation. The paper is conceptual in nature and the emphasis
is on the review of other people's work in this area as part of a longer-term
strategy to develop a formal theory of autopoietic computing.Comment: 10 Pages, 3 figure
Environments for sonic ecologies
This paper outlines a current lack of consideration for the environmental context of Evolutionary Algorithms used for the generation of music. We attempt to readdress this balance by outlining the benefits of developing strong coupling strategies between agent and en- vironment. It goes on to discuss the relationship between artistic process and the viewer and suggests a placement of the viewer and agent in a shared environmental context to facilitate understanding of the artistic process and a feeling of participation in the work. The paper then goes on to outline the installation ‘Excuse Me and how it attempts to achieve a level of Sonic Ecology through the use of a shared environmental context
Surface roughness and thermal conductivity of semiconductor nanowires: going below the Casimir limit
By explicitly considering surface roughness at the atomic level, we
quantitatively show that the thermal conductivity of Si nanowires can be lower
than Casimir's classical limit. However, this violation only occurs for deep
surface degradation. For shallow surface roughness, the Casimir formula is
shown to yield a good approximation to the phonon mean free paths and
conductivity, even for nanowire diameters as thin as 2.22 nm. Our exact
treatment of roughness scattering is in stark contrast with a previously
proposed perturbative approach, which is found to overpredict scattering rates
by an order of magnitude. The obtained results suggest that a complete
theoretical understanding of some previously published experimental results is
still lacking.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Por el contrario en zonas con suelos poco aptos para la agricultura los túmulos son más escasos y de menor tamaño.[Abstract] The relations between the distribution of megali thic graves and the soil characteristics in the province of La Coruña are studied. The highest concentrations of tombs and the biggest ones are related to the best soils for the agriculture. On contrary in zones with poor soi ls the graves are less abundant and of smallest siz
