Purpose: To investigate the association between emotional intelligence (EI) and self-reported
climbing ability. Methods: Redpoint climbing ability was used as an indicator of rock climbing
performance and EI were assessed as ability and a trait using two different questionnaires
MSCEIT and SSEIT in forty-three climbers (15 females and 28 males). ANOVA was used to
analyse differences between male and female and advanced and elite climbers in EI parameters in both questionnaires. The analyses were also adjusted by age using ANCOVA. Results:
Linear regression analysis revealed that there are no differences between trait EI and climbing
performance, but we found the component `Facilitation Thought’ of EI measured as ability was
inversely associated with the highest red-point ability. Conclusion: Our results suggest that
elite climbers do not use their emotions to facilitate thinking as much as expert climbers, which
is positively related to performance. Future researches should direct to investigate how elite
climbers manage their emotions.
Colonising the nonhuman other in Anne Haverty’s "One day as a tiger"
The rise of new ethical anxieties in the interaction between humans and nonhumans alike has not left human social relations and philosophical frameworks unaffected. One such framework might be ecocriticism, a tool of literary analysis that, while not exceptionally new, is not yet widely applied to contemporary Irish literature. In this article, I explore one instance of the animal trope in the novel "One Day as a Tiger" (1997), written by the Irishwoman Anne Haverty. The novel could explore and denounce how Irish society has not totally rejected colonialism and its anthropocentric foundation; instead, Haverty’s fictional Ireland seems to have appropriated the colonising discourse once applied to them and turned it against the nonhuman realm, especially animals, to justify their existence as an independent State. Therefore, the aim of this article is to explore whether, and to what extent, the human protagonist of the novel otherises and reduces the nonhuman protagonist, a ewe, into a symbol of Irish nationality.

Transhumanism and the Anthropocene in Becky Chambers’A Closed and Common Orbit
Transhumanism has been rising in both popularity and influence on western societies and philosophical thought. Dreams of mind transfer, immortality, or cloning as well as the fear of sentient and intelligent artificial intelligence (AI) can be traced in some of Netflix’s most popular series such as Altered Carbon(2018), from the novel by Richard K. Morgan, or Orphan Black(2013), to mention just a few. Similarly, transhumanism may be spotted in Becky Chambers’ fiction. The novel analysed in this paper, AClosed and Common Orbit(2016), a sequel in the author’s Wayfarers series, explores the possibility of cloning human bodies, the production of sentient AI, and the subsequent ethical implications of both science fiction tropes. Far from showing transhumanism as a miracle solution to limitations in human bodies and capacity to avoid climate change, the text presents the suspicions and fears transhumanism may raise in the USA. This article provides evidence of how the Anthropocene and transhumanism operate in Becky Chambers’ novel, theethical effects concerning intrinsic and extrinsic values andtheirpossible subversion through a posthumanist alliance under the Anthropocene.
The university TV, the example of University of Granada
After a brief introduction about the social functions and current possibilities of television in education, in this paper we show the experiences carry out in the University of Granada with the starting of a university television. We explain what (type of emissions) and how it’s been doing now. The University of Granada has opted to technological developments and it’s working on IP Television and taking advantage of its possibilities. We describe here the resources that have been used by the University of Granada for developing and broadcasting of audiovisual material. Finally we evaluate the starting of these experiences and we focus on its future possibilities around formative and informative potentials. Also we analyze how it can influence in the training of receptors by modifying their knowledge, conduct, attitudes... But, above all, we think that these experiences must be based on the improvement of learning processes
From a presentation of the history of the comparative method in diverse scientific disciplines
(natural sciences, sociology, pedagogy, literature, etc.), this article analyzes the importance of the use
of the above mentioned method in the library sciences.
It has been chosen a diachronic study of the question, so that departing from the first works on this
matter (Krzys and Litton), there have been analyzed the definitions and essential ideas of such
experts as Foskett, Shores and, especially the fundamental works of Simsova and Periam Danton.
The article appears as a wide bibliographical review of the comparative method, considered like of
very fruitful application in the sciences of the libraries
On mathematical optimization for clustering categories in contingency tables
Many applications in data analysis study whether two categorical variables are independent
using a function of the entries of their contingency table. Often, the categories
of the variables, associated with the rows and columns of the table, are grouped, yielding
a less granular representation of the categorical variables. The purpose of this is
to attain reasonable sample sizes in the cells of the table and, more importantly, to
incorporate expert knowledge on the allowable groupings. However, it is known that
the conclusions on independence depend, in general, on the chosen granularity, as in
the Simpson paradox. In this paper we propose a methodology to, for a given contingency
table and a fixed granularity, find a clustered table with the highest χ2 statistic.
Repeating this procedure for different values of the granularity, we can either identify
an extreme grouping, namely the largest granularity for which the statistical dependence
is still detected, or conclude that it does not exist and that the two variables are
dependent regardless of the size of the clustered table. For this problem, we propose
an assignment mathematical formulation and a set partitioning one. Our approach is
flexible enough to include constraints on the desirable structure of the clusters, such as
must-link or cannot-link constraints on the categories that can, or cannot, be merged
together, and ensure reasonable sample sizes in the cells of the clustered table from
which trustful statistical conclusions can be derived. We illustrate the usefulness of
our methodology using a dataset of a medical study.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature.
