    Non-Gaussian Geostatistical Modeling using (skew) t Processes

    We propose a new model for regression and dependence analysis when addressing spatial data with possibly heavy tails and an asymmetric marginal distribution. We first propose a stationary process with tt marginals obtained through scale mixing of a Gaussian process with an inverse square root process with Gamma marginals. We then generalize this construction by considering a skew-Gaussian process, thus obtaining a process with skew-t marginal distributions. For the proposed (skew) tt process we study the second-order and geometrical properties and in the tt case, we provide analytic expressions for the bivariate distribution. In an extensive simulation study, we investigate the use of the weighted pairwise likelihood as a method of estimation for the tt process. Moreover we compare the performance of the optimal linear predictor of the tt process versus the optimal Gaussian predictor. Finally, the effectiveness of our methodology is illustrated by analyzing a georeferenced dataset on maximum temperatures in Australi

    Neutrino Electron Scattering and Electroweak Gauge Structure: Future Tests

    Low-energy high-resolution neutrino-electron scattering experiments may play an important role in testing the gauge structure of the electroweak interaction. We propose the use of radioactive neutrino sources (e.g. 51^{51}Cr) in underground experiments such as BOREXINO, HELLAZ and LAMA. As an illustration, we display the sensitivity of these detectors in testing the possible existence of extra neutral gauge bosons, both in the framework of E_6 models and of models with left-right symmetry.Comment: 22 pages, revtex, 4 figures included, accepted for publication in Phys. Even if they are reasonably spread among the university laboratories, their diffusion in industrial companies remains very narrow for several reasons, especially a lack of metrological performance assessment. A full-field measurement can be characterized by its resolution, bias, measuring range, and by a specific quantity, the spatial resolution. The present paper proposes an original procedure to estimate in one single step the resolution, bias and spatial resolution for a given operator (decoding algorithms such as image correlation, low-pass filters, derivation tools ...). This procedure is based on the construction of a particular multi-frequential field, and a Bode diagram representation of the results.     Transient Gamma Ray Spectrometer Measurements of Gamma-Ray Lines from Novae. II. Constraining the Galactic Nova Rate from a Survey of the Southern Sky during 1995-1997

    The good energy resolution (3--4 keV FWHM) of the Transient Gamma Ray Spectrometer (TGRS) on board the WIND spacecraft makes it sensitive to Doppler-shifted outbursts of 511 keV electron-positron annihilation radiation, the reason being that the Doppler shift causes the cosmic line to be slightly offset from a strong instrumental background 511 keV line at rest, which is ubiquitous in space environments. Such a cosmic line (blueshifted) is predicted to arise in classical novae due to the annihilation of positrons from ÎČ\beta-decay on a timescale of a few hours in an expanding envelope. A further advantage of TGRS - its broad field of view, containing the entire southern ecliptic hemisphere - has enabled us to make a virtually complete and unbiased 3-year search for classical novae at distances up to ~1 kpc. We present negative results of this search, and estimate its implications for the highly-uncertain Galactic classical nova rate and for future space missions.Comment: 22 pp. + 3 fig

    Nova Sagittarii 1994 #1 (V4332 Sagittarii): The Discovery and Evolution of an Unusual Luminous Red Variable Star

    We report photometry and spectroscopy of the evolution of Nova Sagittarii 1994 #1 (V4332 Sagittarii) during outburst. We compare the photometric and spectral evolution of this outburst to known classes of outbursts -- including classical novae and outbursts occurring on symbiotic stars -- and find this object does NOT conform to any known class of outburst. The closest match to the behavior of this unusual object is M31 RV, an extremely luminous and red variable object discovered in the bulge of M31 in 1988. However, the temporal behavior and maximum luminosity of the two events differ by several orders of magnitude, requiring substantial intrinsic variation if these two events are members the same type of outburst. Our model of the spectroscopic evolution of this outburst shows that the effective temperature cooled from 4400 K to 2300 K over the three month span of our observations. In combination with line diagnostics in our later spectra, including [OI] lambda 5577 and the dramatic increase in the Halpha to Hbeta ratio, we infer the existence of a cool, dense (N_e ~ 10^{8-9} cm^{-3}) envelope that is optically thick in the Hydrogen Balmer recombination lines (case C). We suggest that a nuclear event in a single star, in which a slow shock drove the photosphere outwards, can power the observed luminosity evolution and the emission spectrum.Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. 24 pages including 8 embedded postscript figures.     Meiotic behavior of a nonaploid accession endorses x = 6 for Brachiaria humidicola (Poaceae).

    Brachiaria humidicola (Poaceae), originally from Africa, is an economically important pasture plant in tropical South America. An accession of B. humidicola (H038) collected from the wild African savanna (Mbeya, Tanzania) showed irregular microsporogenesis. This meiotic behavior was consistent with an allopolyploid origin. Multivalent chromosome association at diakinesis gave tri- to octavalents, associated with two nucleoli in some cells. Six non-congregated univalents in metaphase I and anaphase I, along with previous lines of evidence for x = 6 in B. humidicola, confirm H038 as a nonaploid accession, 2n = 9x = 54. Asynchrony in the genome during microsporogenesis also corroborated this assumption. Its putative origin could be a cross between two related species with different rhythms in meiosis. The meiotic behavior of this accession reinforces the hypothesis of the existence of a new basic chromosome number (x = 6) for Brachiaria. The use of this accession in the breeding of this important forage grass for the tropics is discussed

    Flowering traits in tetraploid Brachiaria ruziziensis breeding.

    Tetraploid Brachiaria ruziziensis genotypes which reproduce sexually are essential for the breeding of other species of the Brachiaria genus which reproduce by apomixis. Aiming at studying the available phenotypic and genetic variability in the breeding population of B. ruziziensis, it was estimated the parameters heritability and genetic and phenotypic correlations between the traits associated with flowering, and the traits responsible for forage yield and nutritional quality. Seventeen traits in 1180 individuals from 59 open pollinated families were studied, and the data were analyzed by mixed model methods. Individuals with sparse flowering presented higher breeding values for total dry matter, yield, and total number of panicles per plant than individuals with early or late flowering. Considering breeding population differences on flowering behavior, on individual narrow sense heritability and on genetic correlations between flowering, agronomic quality and nutritional quality traits have to be considered in intrapopulation breeding and in intrapopulational recurrent selection
