First, it is outlined a contrast between the classic memory definition according to the neuroscience, and to Roger Bartra?s hypothesis, which indicates that the cultural artifacts work like memory and conscience prothesis. Secondly, it is presented some of the main brain parts, and cerebral cortex areas, in which audiovisual stimuli are integrated. Likewise, it is explained how the ?bipedalizaci?n? as evolutionary process part modified some brain functions causing part of the physical suffering that it boosted the cultural prosthesis invention such as speech. In this regard, it is complemented the incomplete brain notion at which Bartra appeals in order to be argued about the speech and culture origin, based on some theoretical references that agree to the incomplete, and immature brain idea. Finally, it is talked how the audiovisual journalism products have developed on one hand as memory prosthesis, saving common events on devices and artificial memories, and on the other hand, as conscience prosthesis, replacing the necessity of giving sense to the events and inventing audiovisual versions from the past.
Keywords: brain, exobrain, incomplete brain, past invention, audiovisual journalism products
Generic Tasks of Scientific Discovery
Abstract The aim of this paper is conceptual and theoretical: to propose the concept of generic scientific task as an organizing principle for research on scientific discovery, or more broadly, scientific inference. Generic tasks cut across various scientific fields, but involve rather specific inferences; in any case, their generality is found only by surveying science as a whole. Computer programs that carry out these generic tasks may differ somewhat from one science to another, but they all share similar computational mechanisms: hence they represent generic tasks. We assemble a broad array of previous work as evidence to support this concept, and work out the research plan and methods that are implied by it

User preferences in the design of advanced driver assistance systems
The transport network and mobility aspects are constantly changing, and major changes are expected in the coming years in terms of safety and sustainability purposes. In this paper, we present the main conclusions and analysis of data collected from a survey of drivers in Spain and Portugal regarding user preferences, highlighting the main functionalities and behavior that an advanced driver assistance system must have in order to grant it special importance on the road to prevent accidents and also to enable drivers to have a pleasant journey. Based on the results obtained from the survey, we developed and present a working prototype for an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), its architecture and rules systems that allowed us to create and test some scenarios in a real environment.5311-8814-F0ED | Sara Maria da Cruz Maia de Oliveira PaivaN/
Privacy-Preserving Decision Tree Training and Prediction against Malicious Server
Privacy-preserving machine learning enables secure outsourcing of machine learning tasks to an untrusted service provider (server) while preserving the privacy of the user\u27s data (client). Attaining good concrete efficiency for complicated machine learning tasks, such as training decision trees, is one of the challenges in this area. Prior works on privacy-preserving decision trees required the parties to have comparable computational resources, and instructed the client to perform computation proportional to the complexity of the entire task.
In this work we present new protocols for privacy-preserving decision trees, for both training and prediction, achieving the following desirable properties:
1. Efficiency: the client\u27s complexity is independent of the training-set size during training, and of the tree size during prediction.
2. Security: privacy holds against malicious servers.
3. Practical usability: high accuracy, fast prediction, and feasible training demonstrated on standard UCI datasets, encrypted with fully homomorphic encryption.
To the best of our knowledge, our protocols are the first to offer all these properties simultaneously.
The core of our work consists of two technical contributions. First, a new low-degree polynomial approximation for functions, leading to faster protocols for training and prediction on encrypted data. Second, a design of an easy-to-use mechanism for proving privacy against malicious adversaries that is suitable for a wide family of protocols, and in particular, our protocols; this mechanism could be of independent interest

Generation and analysis of an Eucalyptus globulus cDNA library constructed from seedlings subjected to low temperature conditions
Eucalyptus globulus is the most important commercial temperate
hardwood in the world because of its wood properties and due to its
characteristics for biofuel production. However, only a very low number
of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) are publicly available for this tree
species. We constructed a cDNA from E. globulus seedlings subjected to
low temperature and sequenced 9,913 randomly selected clones,
generating 8,737 curated ESTs. The assembly produced 1,062 contigs and
3,879 singletons forming a Eucalyptus unigene set. Based on BLASTX
analysis, 89.3% of the contigs and 88.5% of the singletons had
significant similarity to known genes in the non-redundant database of
GenBank. The Eucalyptus unigene set generated is a valuable public
resource that provides an initial model for genes and regulatory
pathways involved in cell wall biosynthesis at low temperature
Privacy-Preserving Decision Trees Training and Prediction
In the era of cloud computing and machine learning, data has become a highly valuable resource. Recent history has shown that the benefits brought forth by this data driven culture come at a cost of potential data leakage. Such breaches have a devastating impact on individuals and industry, and lead the community to seek privacy preserving solutions. A promising approach is to utilize Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) to enable machine learning over encrypted data, thus providing resiliency against information leakage. However, computing over encrypted data incurs a high computational overhead, thus requiring the redesign of algorithms, in an ``FHE-friendly manner, to maintain their practicality.
In this work we focus on the ever-popular tree based methods (e.g., boosting, random forests), and propose a new privacy-preserving solution to training and prediction for trees. Our solution employs a low-degree approximation for the step-function together with a lightweight interactive protocol, to replace components of the vanilla algorithm that are costly over encrypted data. Our protocols for decision trees achieve practical usability demonstrated on standard UCI datasets encrypted with fully homomorphic encryption. In addition, the communication complexity of our protocols is independent of the tree size and dataset size in prediction and training, respectively, which significantly improves on prior works
