Magnetic and dielectric properties of multiferroic Eu0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25TiO3 ceramics
Dielectric and magnetic properties of Eu0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25TiO3 are investigated
between 10 K and 300 K in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 THz. A peak in
permittivity revealed near 130 K and observed ferroelectric hysteresis loops
prove the ferroelectric order below thistemperature. The peak in permittivity
is given mainly by softening of the lowest frequency polar phonon (soft mode
revealed in THz and IR spectra) that demonstrates displacive character of the
phase transition. Room-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis reveals cubic
structure, but the IR reflectivity spectra give evidence of a lower crystal
structure, presumably tetragonal I4/mcm with tilted oxygen octahedra as it has
been observed in EuTiO3. The magnetic measurements show that the
antiferromagnetic order occurs below 1.8 K. Eu0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25TiO3 has three
times lower coercive field than Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3, therefore we propose this
system for measurements of electric dipole moment of electron.Comment: Phase Transitions, in pres
First-principles design and subsequent synthesis of a material to search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron
We describe the first-principles design and subsequent synthesis of a new
material with the specific functionalities required for a solid-state-based
search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron. We show
computationally that perovskite-structure europium barium titanate should
exhibit the required large and pressure-dependent ferroelectric polarization,
local magnetic moments, and absence of magnetic ordering even at liquid helium
temperature. Subsequent synthesis and characterization of
EuBaTiO ceramics confirm the predicted desirable
properties.Comment: Nature Materials, in pres
Fast polarization mechanisms in the uniaxial tungsten-bronze relaxor strontium barium niobate SBN-81
The high-frequency dielectric response of the uniaxial strontium barium niobate crystals with 81% of Sr has been studied from 1 kHz to 30 THz along the polar c axis by means of several techniques (far infrared, time domain terahertz, high-frequency and low-frequency dielectric spectroscopies) in a wide temperature interval 20–600 K. Relaxor properties were observed in the complex dielectric response and four main excitations were ascertained below the phonon frequencies. These fast polarization mechanisms take place at THz, GHz and MHz ranges and show different temperature evolution. The central mode excitation in the THz range, related to anharmonic dynamics of cations, slightly softens from high temperatures and then hardens below T ~ 400 K. Below the phase transition (at T ~ 330 K) an additional microwave excitation appears near 10 GHz related to micro domain wall oscillations. The strongest relaxation appears in the GHz range and slows down on cooling according to the Arrhenius law. Finally, another relaxation, present in the MHz range at high temperatures, also slows down on cooling at least to the kHz range. These two relaxations are due to polar fluctuations and nanodomains dynamics. Altogether, the four excitations explain the dielectric permittivity maximum in the kHz range
Subwavelength anti-diffracting beams propagating over more than 1,000 Rayleigh lengths
Propagating light beams with widths down to and below the optical wavelength require bulky large-aperture lenses and remain focused only for micrometric distances. Here, we report the observation of light beams that violate this localization/depth- of-focus law by shrinking as they propagate, allowing resolution to be maintained and increased over macroscopic propagation lengths. In nanodisordered ferroelectrics we observe a non-paraxial propagation of a sub-micrometre-sized beam for over 1,000 diffraction lengths, the narrowest visible beam reported to date. This unprecedented effect is caused by the nonlinear response of a dipolar glass, which transforms the leading opticalwave equation into a Klein-Gordon-type equation that describes a massive particle field. Our findings open the way to high-resolution optics over large depths of focus, and a route to merging bulk optics into nanodevices
Reversible Control of Magnetic Interactions by Electric Field in a Single Phase Material
Intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling describes the interaction between magnetic
and electric polarization through an inherent microscopic mechanism in a single
phase material. This phenomenon has the potential to control the magnetic state
of a material with an electric field, an enticing prospect for device
engineering. We demonstrate 'giant' magnetoelectric cross-field control in a
single phase rare earth titanate film. In bulk form, EuTiO3 is
antiferromagnetic. However, both anti and ferromagnetic interactions coexist
between different nearest neighbor europium ions. In thin epitaxial films,
strain can be used to alter the relative strength of the magnetic exchange
constants. Here, we not only show that moderate biaxial compression
precipitates local magnetic competition, but also demonstrate that the
application of an electric field at this strain state, switches the magnetic
ground state. Using first principles density functional theory, we resolve the
underlying microscopic mechanism resulting in the EuTiO3 G-type magnetic
structure and illustrate how it is responsible for the 'giant' cross-field
magnetoelectric effect
High temperature dielectric ceramics: a review of temperature-stable high-permittivity perovskites
Recent developments are reviewed in the search for dielectric ceramics which can operate at temperatures >200 °C, well above the limit of existing high volumetric efficiency capacitor materials. Compositional systems based on lead-free relaxor dielectrics with mixed cation site occupancy on the perovskite lattice are summarised, and properties compared. As a consequence of increased dielectric peak broadening and shifts to peak temperatures, properties can be engineered such that a plateau in relative permittivity–temperature response (εr–T) is obtained, giving a ±15 %, or better, consistency in εr over a wide temperature range. Materials with extended upper temperature limits of 300, 400 and indeed 500 °C are grouped in this article according to the parent component of the solid solution, for example BaTiO3 and Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3. Challenges are highlighted in achieving a lower working temperature of −55 °C, whilst also extending the upper temperature limit of stable εr to ≥300 °C, and achieving high-permittivity and low values of dielectric loss tangent, tan δ. Summary tables and diagrams are used to help compare values of εr, tan δ, and temperature ranges of stability for different material
Search for electron antineutrino appearance in a long-baseline muon antineutrino beam
Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. A complementary analysis that introduces an additional free parameter which allows non-PMNS values of electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance also finds no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions
Growth of single crystals in the (Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-(Sr1-xCax)TiO3 system by solid state crystal growth
Ceramics based on (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3 are promising candidates for actuator applications because of large strains generated by an electric field-induced phase transition. For example, the (1-x)(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-xSrTiO(3) system exhibits a morphotropic phase boundary at x = 0.2-0.3, leading to high values of inverse piezoelectric constant d*(33), which can be further improved by the use of single crystals. In our previous work, single crystals of (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-SrTiO3 and (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-CaTiO3 were grown by the solid state crystal growth technique. Growth in the (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-SrTiO3 system was sluggish whereas the (Na1/2B1/2)TiO3-CaTiO3 single crystals grew well. In the present work, 0.8(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-0.2(Sr1-xCax)TiO3 single crystals (with x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) were produced by the solid state crystal growth technique in an attempt to improve crystal growth rate. The dependence of mean matrix grain size, single crystal growth distance, and electrical properties on the Ca concentration was investigated in detail. These investigations indicated that at x = 0.3 the matrix grain growth was suppressed and the driving force for single crystal growth was enhanced. Replacing Sr with Ca increased the shoulder temperature T-s and temperature of maximum relative permittivity T-max, causing a decrease in inverse piezoelectric properties and a change from normal to incipient ferroelectric behavior
Search for neutral-current induced single photon production at the ND280 near detector in T2K
Neutrino neutral-current (NC) induced single photon production is a sub-leading order process for accelerator-based neutrino beam experiments including T2K. It is, however, an important process to understand because it is a background for electron (anti)neutrino appearance oscillation experiments. Here, we performed the first search of this process below 1 GeV using the fine-grained detector at the T2K ND280 off-axis near detector. By reconstructing single photon kinematics from electron-positron pairs, we achieved 95% pure gamma ray sample from 5.738 x 10(20) protons-on-targets neutrino mode data. We do not find positive evidence of NC induced single photon production in this sample. We set the model-dependent upper limit on the cross-section for this process, at 0.114 x 10(-38) cm(2) (90% C.L.) per nucleon, using the J-PARC off-axis neutrino beam with an average energy of similar to 0.6 GeV. This is the first limit on this process below 1 GeV which is important for current and future oscillation experiments looking for electron neutrino appearance oscillation signals
