Weight-based discrimination, body dissatisfaction and emotional eating:the role of perceived social consensus.
Objective: Discrimination can have a negative impact on psychological well-being, attitudes and behaviour. This research evaluates the impact of experiences of weight-based discrimination upon emotional eating and body dissatisfaction, and also explores whether people's beliefs about an ingroup's social consensus concerning how favourably overweight people are regarded can moderate the relationship between experiences of discrimination and negative eating and weight-related cognitions and behaviours. Research methods and procedures: 197 undergraduate students completed measures about their experiences of weight-based discrimination, emotional eating and body dissatisfaction. Participants also reported their beliefs concerning an ingroup's attitude towards overweight people. Results: Recollections of weight-based discrimination significantly contributed to emotional eating and body dissatisfaction. However, the relationships between experiencing discrimination and body dissatisfaction and emotional eating were weakest amongst participants who believed that the ingroup held a positive attitude towards overweight people. Discussion: Beliefs about ingroup social consensus concerning overweight people can influence the relationships between weight-based discrimination and emotional eating and body dissatisfaction. Changing group perceptions to perceive it to be unacceptable to discriminate against overweight people may help to protect victims of discrimination against the negative consequences of weight-based stigma
The effect of metastereotyping on judgements of higher-status outgroups when reciprocity and social image improvement motives collide
Two experiments examined the effect of metastereotype valence on high and low identifiers' judgments of an outgroup. As high identifiers are strongly emotionally invested in the ingroup, we expected that such group members would feel angry when they activate negative metastereotypes which would correspondingly lead to less favourable evaluation of the outgroup. We further expected this pattern to be particularly visible when high identifiers could communicate their dissatisfaction to an outgroup (but not an ingroup) audience presumably to persuade the outgroup to reevaluate their attitudes toward the ingroup. We did not expect low identifiers to reflect the valence of metastereotypes in their outgroup attitudes and judgments, given their weak emotional ties with the ingroup and because such members are likely to feel that metastereotypes do not apply to them personally. Results from two experiments (Study 1, N = 78; Study 2, N = 80) supported these predictions and are discussed in light of the implications of metastereotyping for intergroup relations
Intein Inhibitors as Novel Antimicrobials: Protein Splicing in Human Pathogens, Screening Methods, and Off-target Considerations
Protein splicing is a post-translational process by which an intervening polypeptide, or intein, catalyzes its own removal from the flanking polypeptides, or exteins, concomitant with extein ligation. Although inteins are highly abundant in the microbial world, including within several human pathogens, they are absent in the genomes of metazoans. As protein splicing is required to permit function of essential proteins within pathogens, inteins represent attractive antimicrobial targets. Here we review key proteins interrupted by inteins in pathogenic mycobacteria and fungi, exciting discoveries that provide proof of concept that intein activity can be inhibited and that this inhibition has an effect on the host organism’s fitness, and bioanalytical methods that have been used to screen for intein activity. We also consider potential off-target inhibition of hedgehog signaling, given the similarity in structure and function of inteins and hedgehog autoprocessing domains
Making Connections:Social identification with New Treatment Groups for Lifestyle Management of Severe Obesity
Groups are regularly used to deliver healthcare services, including the management of obesity, and there is growing evidence that patients' experiences of such groups fundamentally shape treatment effects. This study investigated factors related to patients' shared social identity formed within the context of a treatment group for the management of severe obesity. A cross-sectional survey was administered to patients registered with a UK medical obesity service and enrolled on a group-based education and support programme. Patients (N=78; MBMI = 48 on entry to the service) completed measures of group demographics (e.g., group membership continuity) and psychosocial variables (e.g., past experiences of weight discrimination), and reported their social identification with the treatment group. The results showed that patients identified with the treatment group to the extent that there was continuity in membership across the programme and they perceived themselves more centrally in terms of their weight status. Weight centrality was negatively associated with external social support and positively associated with experiences of weight discrimination. Group continuity was positively correlated with session attendance frequency. Patients presenting to clinical treatment services with severe obesity often do so after sustained weight loss failure and exposure to negative societal experiences. This study highlights that providing a treatment environment wherein these experiences can be shared with other patients may provide common ground for development of a new, positive social identity that can structure programme engagement and progression
Cosmology of Axions and Moduli: A Dynamical Systems Approach
This paper is concerned with string cosmology and the dynamics of multiple
scalar fields in potentials that can become negative, and their features as
(Early) Dark Energy models. Our point of departure is the "String Axiverse", a
scenario that motivates the existence of cosmologically light axion fields as a
generic consequence of string theory. We couple such an axion to its
corresponding modulus. We give a detailed presentation of the rich cosmology of
such a model, ranging from the setting of initial conditions on the fields
during inflation, to the asymptotic future. We present some simplifying
assumptions based on the fixing of the axion decay constant , and on the
effective field theory when the modulus trajectory is adiabatic, and find the
conditions under which these assumptions break down. As a by-product of our
analysis, we find that relaxing the assumption of fixed leads to the
appearance of a new meta-stable de-Sitter region for the modulus without the
need for uplifting by an additional constant. A dynamical systems analysis
reveals the existence of many fixed point attractors, repellers and saddle
points, which we analyse in detail. We also provide geometric interpretations
of the phase space. The fixed points can be used to bound the couplings in the
model. A systematic scan of certain regions of parameter space reveals that the
future evolution of the universe in this model can be rich, containing multiple

Period-luminosity relations of pulsating M giants in the solar neighbourhood and the Magellanic Clouds
We analyse the results of a 5.5-yr photometric campaign that monitored 247
southern, semi-regular variables with relatively precise Hipparcos parallaxes
to demonstrate an unambiguous detection of Red Giant Branch (RGB) pulsations in
the solar neighbourhood. We show that Sequence A' contains a mixture of AGB and
RGB stars, as indicated by a temperature related shift at the TRGB. Large
Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Galactic sequences are compared in several ways to
show that the P-L sequence zero-points have a negligible metallicity
dependence. We describe a new method to determine absolute magnitudes from
pulsation periods and calibrate the LMC distance modulus using Hipparcos
parallaxes to find \mu (LMC) = 18.54 +- 0.03 mag. Several sources of systematic
error are discussed to explain discrepancies between the MACHO and OGLE
sequences in the LMC. We derive a relative distance modulus of the Small
Magellanic Cloud (SMC) relative to the LMC of \Delta \mu = 0.41 +- 0.02 mag. A
comparison of other pulsation properties, including period-amplitude and
luminosity-amplitude relations, confirms that RGB pulsation properties are
consistent and universal, indicating that the RGB sequences are suitable as
high-precision distance indicators. The M giants with the shortest periods
bridge the gap between G and K giant solar-like oscillations and M-giant

NR3E receptors in cnidarians : a new family of steroid receptor relatives extends the possible mechanisms for ligand binding

animals, but the role of steroid signaling in cnidarians has been contentious. Cnidarians produce
steroids, including A-ring aromatic steroids with a side-chain, but these are probably made through
pathways different than the one used by vertebrates to make their A-ring aromatic steroids. Here we
present comparative genomic analyses indicating the presence of a previously undescribed nuclear
receptor family within medusozoan cnidarians, that we propose to call NR3E. This family predates
the diversification of ERR/ER/SR in bilaterians, indicating that the first NR3 evolved in the
common ancestor of the placozoan and cnidarian-bilaterian with lineage-specific loss in the
anthozoans, even though multiple species in this lineage have been shown to produce aromatic
steroids, whose function remain unclear. We discovered serendipitously that a cytoplasmic factor
within epidermal cells of transgenic Hydra vulgaris can trigger the nuclear translocation of
heterologously expressed human ERα. This led us to hypothesize that aromatic steroids may also be
present in the medusozoan cnidarian lineage, which includes Hydra, and may explain the
translocation of human ERα. Docking experiments with paraestrol A, a cnidarian A-ring aromatic
steroid, into the ligand-binding pocket of Hydra NR3E indicates that, if an aromatic steroid is
indeed the true ligand, which remains to be demonstrated, it would bind to the pocket through a

Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome: an Update and Review of the Literature
Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is characterized by immune dysregulation due to a defect in lymphocyte apoptosis. The clinical manifestations may be noted in multiple family members and include lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, increased risk of lymphoma and autoimmune disease, which typically involve hematopoietic cell lines manifesting as multilineage cytopenias. Since the disease was first characterized in the early 1990s, there have been many advances in the diagnosis and management of this syndrome. The inherited genetic defect of many ALPS patients has involved (FAS) pathway signaling proteins, but there remain those patients who carry undefined genetic defects. Despite ALPS having historically been considered a primary immune defect presenting in early childhood, adult onset presentation is increasingly becoming recognized, and more so in genetically undefined patients and those with somatic FAS mutations. Thus, future research may identify novel pathways and/or regulatory proteins important in lymphocyte activation and apoptosis
An evaluation of the implementation of interventions to reduce post-operative infections and optimise antibiotic use across the surgical pathway in India: A mixed methods exploratory study protocol
Introduction: Postoperative infections represent a significant burden of disease, demanding antibiotic prescriptions, and are contributing to antimicrobial resistance. The burden of infection as a surgical complication is greater in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We report the protocol of a pilot study for the co-design, implementation and evaluation of two infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) interventions across the surgical pathway in a teaching hospital in India. Methods and analysis: The two interventions developed following in-depth qualitative enquiry are (i) surveillance and feedback of postoperative infections to optimise the use of antibiotics in two surgical departments (gastrointestinal and cardiovascular and thoracic surgery) and (ii) raising awareness amongst patients, carers and members of public about IPC and AMS. We will conduct a prospective study, formatively evaluating the implementation process of delivering the two co-designed interventions using implementation science frameworks. The study will systematically assess the context of intervention delivery, so that implementation support for the interventions may be adapted to the needs of stakeholders throughout the study. Analysis of implementation logs and interviews with stakeholders upon completion of the implementation period, will offer insights into the perceived acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility and sustainability of the interventions and their implementation support. Implementation costs will be captured descriptively. Feasibility of clinical data collection to investigate effectiveness of interventions will also be assessed for a future larger study. Thematic framework analysis and descriptive statistics will be used to report the qualitative and quantitative data, respectively. Strengths and limitations of this study: • The paired interventions have been co-designed from their inception with involvement of stakeholders at different stages in the surgical pathway. • Simultaneous evaluation of implementation and clinical outcomes will inform the development of a future larger study to enable/assess the scalability of interventions • The study offers a novel combination of implementation theory-informed, stakeholder-driven and clinically relevant evaluation, carried out in the context of a middle-income country hospital. • The project may not be applicable to every low-resource setting and surgical context due to differences in healthcare systems and cultures. However, the application of implementation science concepts may facilitate transferability and adaptation to other settings
