    The Peculiar Balmer Line Profiles of OQ 208

    We present spectrophotometric observations of the Broad Line Radio Galaxy OQ 208 (Mrk 668, 1404+286) obtained between 1985 and 1991. We show that the Balmer line fluxes and profile shapes undergo remarkable changes. The ratio of intensities between the broad and narrow components of Hbeta increased monotonically from 15 in 1985 to 40 in 1991. The peak of the broad components of Hbeta and Halpha were known to be strongly displaced to the red. We have discovered a correlation between the amplitude of the broad peak displacement and the luminosity of Hbeta, in the sense that the displacement is larger when the line luminosity is higher. We suggest that the observations are not compatible with either a binary Broad Line Region model or one involving ballistic acceleration of the line emitting gas. Radiative acceleration of a system of outflowing clouds readily explains the correlation between line shift and luminosity as well as the peculiar line profiles. Furthermore, it seems that most or all of the Balmer emission originates from the inward face of the clouds. Theoretical line profiles suggest that the observed Hbeta profile is best fit assuming the contribution of an ensemble which might be spherical or confined in a thick disk in addition to a component emitted in a thin shell contained in a cone of half opening angle 12 degrees seen along its axis.Comment: 28 pages + tables and figures available upon request, Latex, No preprint numbe

    Quasars Clustering at z approx 3 on Scales less sim 10 h^{-1} Mpc

    We test the hypothesis whether high redshift QSOs would preferentially appear in small groups or pairs, and if they are associated with massive, young clusters. We carried out a photometric search for \Ly emitters on scales ≲10h−1\lesssim 10 h^{-1} Mpc, in the fields of a sample of 47 z≈3z\approx3 known QSOs. Wide and narrow band filter color-magnitude diagrams were generated for each of the 6′.6×6′.66'.6\times6'.6 fields. A total of 13 non resolved objects with a significant color excess were detected as QSO candidates at a redshift similar to that of the target. All the candidates are significantly fainter than the reference QSOs, with only 2 of them within 2 magnitudes of the central object. Follow-up spectroscopic observations have shown that 5, i.e., about 40% of the candidates, are QSOs at the same redshift of the target; 4 are QSOs at different z (two of them probably being a lensed pair at z = 1.47); 2 candidates are unresolved HII galaxies at z∼\sim0.3; one unclassified and one candidate turned out to be a CCD flaw. These data indicate that at least 10% of the QSOs at z∼\sim3 do have companions. We have also detected a number of resolved, rather bright \Ly Emitter Candidates. Most probably a large fraction of them might be bright galaxies with [OII] emission, at z≈\approx 0.3. The fainter population of our candidates corresponds to the current expectations.     How Dry Are Red Mergers?

    The focus of current research in galaxy evolution has increasingly turned to understanding the effect that mergers have on the evolution of systems on the red sequence. For those interactions purported to occur dissipationlessly (so called "dry mergers"), it would appear that the role of gas is minimal. However, if these mergers are not completely dry, then even low levels of gas may be detectable. The purpose of our study is to test whether early type galaxies with HI in or around them, or "wet" ellipticals, would have been selected as dry mergers by the criteria in van Dokkum (2005, AJ, 130, 2647). To that end, we examine a sample of 20 early types from the HI Rogues Gallery with neutral hydrogen in their immediate environs. Of these, the 15 brightest and reddest galaxies match the optical dry merger criteria, but in each case, the presence of HI means that they are not truly dry.Comment: 8 pages plus 1 table and 5 figures; accepted for publication in A

    Behind the loss of salinity resistance during domestication: alternative eco-physiological strategies are revealed in tomato clade.

    Salinity stress impairs growth and physiological performance in tomato, which is one of the most economically important vegetables and is widely cultivated in arid and semi-arid areas of the world. Plant landraces, which are heterogeneous, local adaptations of domesticated species, offer a unique opportunity to valorize available germplasm, underpinning the productivity, resilience, and adaptive capacity of staple crops in vulnerable environments. Here, we investigated the response of fully mature tomato plants from a commercial variety, an ancestral wild relative, and a landrace under short-term salinity exposure, as well as their ability to recover upon cessation of stress. The heterogeneous panel evaluated in this study revealed different adaptative strategies to cope the stress. Our data highlighted the ability of the tomato clade to handle low and intermediate salinity stress for short-term exposure time, as well as its capacity to recover after the cessation of stress, although inter- and intraspecific variations in morphological and physiological responses to salinity were observed. Overall, the landrace and the wild type performed similarly to control conditions under low salinity, demonstrating an improved ability to maintain ionic balance. In contrast, the commercial genotype showed susceptibility and severe symptoms even under low salinity, with pronounced reductions in K+/Na+ ratio, PSII photochemical efficiency, and photosynthetic pigments. This research confirmed that improved salt tolerant genotypes can lead to substantial, positive impacts on horticultural production. While the salt tolerance mechanism of domesticated tomato was efficient under mild stress conditions, it failed at higher salinity levels

    The ALHAMBRA photometric system

    This paper presents the characterization of the optical range of the ALHAMBRA photometric system, a 20 contiguous, equal-width, medium-band CCD system with wavelength coverage from 3500A to 9700A. The photometric description of the system is done by presenting the full response curve as a product of the filters, CCD and atmospheric transmission curves, and using some first and second order moments of this response function. We also introduce the set of standard stars that defines the system, formed by 31 classic spectrophotometric standard stars which have been used in the calibration of other known photometric systems, and 288 stars, flux calibrated homogeneously, from the Next Generation Spectral Library (NGSL). Based on the NGSL, we determine the transformation equations between Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) ugriz photometry and the ALHAMBRA photometric system, in order to establish some relations between both systems. Finally we develop and discuss a strategy to calculate the photometric zero points of the different pointings in the ALHAMBRA project.Comment: Astronomical Journal on the 14th of January 201

    Shakhbazian compact galaxy groups. II. Photometric and spectroscopic study of ShCG 376

    The results of the redshift measurements and of the detailed surface photometry in BVR of the compact group ShCG 376 are presented. The radial velocity dispersion, the virial mass, the total luminosity, the M/L ratio, and the crossing time of the group are estimated. The group consists of eight accordant redshift spiral galaxies. Four (or possibly five) of the group members have emission-line spectra. Such morphological content and the number of emission-line galaxies are very atypical for compact galaxy groups. There are signs of interaction between some members of the group. It is suggested that the irregular shape of the brightest galaxy No. 4 is probably due to interaction with other members of the group, particularly, the emission line galaxy No. 6 with a discordant redshift (Delta v = 2600 km/s).     Validity and reliability of an android device for the assessment of fall risk in older adult inmates

    Aim: To validate the Android device, FallSkip, as a tool to assess the fallers in older adult inmates. Design: A cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study. Methods: For the validation of the FallSkip, the diagnostic criterion used was the risk of having suffered a fall during the last year. Results: The results for the FallSkip tool were as follows: sensitivity 60.7%; specificity 83.0%; positive predictive value 65.4%; negative predictive value 80.0%; accuracy 75.3%. In total, 32.1% of participants were found to be at high risk of falls, 23.5% were at mild risk and 7.4% were found to have no risk. Conclusion: The FallSkip device is shown to be a very suitable tool for fall risk assessment. The sample studied presented a statistically significant percentage of fall risk, which made it necessary to carry out interventions through physical activities to improve balance and stability

    Dust-filled axially symmetric universes with a cosmological constant

    Following the recent recognition of a positive value for the vacuum energy density and the realization that a simple Kantowski-Sachs model might fit the classical tests of cosmology, we study the qualitative behavior of three anisotropic and homogeneous models: Kantowski-Sachs, Bianchi type-I and Bianchi type-III universes, with dust and a cosmological constant, in order to find out which are physically permitted. We find that these models undergo isotropization up to the point that the observations will not be able to distinguish between them and the standard model, except for the Kantowski-Sachs model (Ωk00)(\Omega_{k_{0}}0) with ΩΛ0\Omega_{\Lambda_{0}} smaller than some critical value ΩΛM\Omega_{\Lambda_{M}}. Even if one imposes that the Universe should be nearly isotropic since the last scattering epoch (z≈1000z\approx 1000), meaning that the Universe should have approximately the same Hubble parameter in all directions (considering the COBE 4-Year data), there is still a large range for the matter density parameter compatible with Kantowsky-Sachs and Bianchi type-III if ∣Ω0+ΩΛ0−1∣≤δ|\Omega_0+\Omega_{\Lambda_0}-1|\leq \delta, for a very small δ\delta . The Bianchi type-I model becomes exactly isotropic owing to our restrictions and we have Ω0+ΩΛ0=1\Omega_0+\Omega_{\Lambda_0}=1 in this case. Of course, all these models approach locally an exponential expanding state provided the cosmological constant ΩΛ>ΩΛM\Omega_\Lambda>\Omega_{\Lambda_{M}}.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 table.     The evolution of Balmer jump selected galaxies in the ALHAMBRA survey

    We present a new color-selection technique, based on the Bruzual & Charlot models convolved with the bands of the ALHAMBRA survey, and the redshifted position of the Balmer jump to select star-forming galaxies in the redshift range 0.5 < z < 1.5. These galaxies are dubbed Balmer jump Galaxies BJGs. We apply the iSEDfit Bayesian approach to fit each detailed SED and determine star-formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, age and absolute magnitudes. The mass of the haloes where these samples reside are found via a clustering analysis. Five volume-limited BJG sub-samples with different mean redshifts are found to reside in haloes of median masses ∼1012.5±0.2M⊙\sim 10^{12.5 \pm 0.2} M_\odot slightly increasing toward z=0.5. This increment is similar to numerical simulations results which suggests that we are tracing the evolution of an evolving population of haloes as they grow to reach a mass of ∼1012.7±0.1M⊙\sim 10^{12.7 \pm 0.1} M_\odot at z=0.5. The likely progenitors of our samples at z∼\sim3 are Lyman Break Galaxies, which at z∼\sim2 would evolve into star-forming BzK galaxies, and their descendants in the local Universe are elliptical galaxies.Hence, this allows us to follow the putative evolution of the SFR, stellar mass and age of these galaxies. From z∼\sim1.0 to z∼\sim0.5, the stellar mass of the volume limited BJG samples nearly does not change with redshift, suggesting that major mergers play a minor role on the evolution of these galaxies. The SFR evolution accounts for the small variations of stellar mass, suggesting that star formation and possible minor mergers are the main channels of mass assembly.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures.     Holding up mirrors: reflections on academic literacy development across course curricula

    The aim of the HEPPP funded project presented here is to embed support for the development of academic literacies (Lea & Street 1998) by developing inclusive curricula in courses with a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic status (LSES) backgrounds (Devlin et al. 2012). Reflection is central in both the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECE) and the Bachelor of Social Work, and the student profiles in these two courses mirror each other, but the approach taken differs. Many BECE students enter university through a TAFE pathway, some have low or no school exit scores and may have faced significant educational disadvantage in the past (Whitington et al. 2009). The BECE team responded to the invitation to use the Harper (2011) framework for academic literacy mapping by revising it and making it their own. Similarly, a large proportion of social work students are mature aged and first in their family to attend university with many entering via the TAFE sector (Goldingay et al. 2011). This earlier study found differences between staff and student perceptions of the academic skills needed for success, so resources developed through the project drew on the student voice and student perceptions to invite new students into disciplinary practices. This presentation will illustrate the approaches taken by Language and Learning Advisers (LLAs) working collaboratively with these two academic teams to help academic staff reflect on, scaffold and support the development of the academic literacies relevant to their discipline and provide more relevant feedback (Jolly 2001)
