Heat flow of the Earth and resonant capture of solar 57-Fe axions
In a very conservative approach, supposing that total heat flow of the Earth
is exclusively due to resonant capture inside the Earth of axions, emitted by
57-Fe nuclei on Sun, we obtain limit on mass of hadronic axion: m_a<1.8 keV.
Taking into account release of heat from decays of 40-K, 232-Th, 238-U inside
the Earth, this estimation could be improved to the value: m_a<1.6 keV. Both
the values are less restrictive than limits set in devoted experiments to
search for 57-Fe axions (m_a<216-745 eV), but are much better than limits
obtained in experiments with 83-Kr (m_a<5.5 keV) and 7-Li (m_a<13.9-32 keV).Comment: 8 page
Opportunities for Precision Agriculture in Serbia
The aim of this paper is to analyze the factors leading to low adoption rate of precision farming in Serbia and to describe steps being taken by BioSense institute to increase it. The majority of the arable land in Serbia is grown by small family owned and operated farms most of which are in the range of 2 to 5 ha making them highly unsustainable. Only 16% of the arable land is managed by agricultural companies and cooperatives. We believe that the adoption of advanced technologies with the currently available precision farming solutions is low among the small farmers due to the small size of the agricultural fields and their inability to invest in technologies. Therefore BioSense institute aims to develop low cost, easy to use precision farming solutions that can be applied anywhere regardless of size, the type and age of agricultural machinery used by the farmers and make IT an important tool to drive small farms towards sustainability. With the new applications developed by BioSense all farmers, even small, can benefit from the diffusion of IT into agriculture making precision farming widely accepted in the years to come. In the framework of the “Digital Agriculture of Serbia” program, several technologies are being developed in the areas of nano and microelectronic in-situ sensors, robotic platforms, genotyping/phenotypic, remote sensing (UAS, satellites), internet of things (IoT), and big data analytics as a means to create new information and extract new knowledge that is not otherwise available. A web-based and android-based digital platform named “AgroSense” was recently released for public use and got widely accepted with a large number of large, medium and small farmers registering to the system. The platform brings the benefits of IT to the end users providing free and paid tools (for advanced users) for better decision making. It is also an excellent tool for big data collection that will create new agronomic knowledge. We foresee a great potential for advancing and modernizing farming in Serbia leading towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture
Double Spin Asymmetries A_NN and A_SS at sqrt{s}=200 GeV in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at RHIC
We present the first measurements of the double spin asymmetries A_NN and
A_SS at sqrt{s}=200 GeV, obtained by the pp2pp experiment using polarized
proton beams at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The data were
collected in the four momentum transfer t range 0.01<|t|<0.03 (GeV/c)^2. The
measured asymmetries, which are consistent with zero, allow us to estimate
upper limits on the double helicity-flip amplitudes phi_2 and phi_4 at small t
as well as on the difference Delta(sigma_T) between the total cross sections
for transversely polarized protons with antiparallel or parallel spin

Exact Self-consistent Particle-like Solutions to the Equations of Nonlinear Scalar Electrodynamics in General Relativity
Exact self-consistent particle-like solutions with spherical and/or
cylindrical symmetry to the equations governing the interacting system of
scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational fields have been obtained. As a
particular case it is shown that the equations of motion admit a special kind
of solutions with sharp boundary known as droplets. For these solutions, the
physical fields vanish and the space-time is flat outside of the critical
sphere or cylinder. Therefore, the mass and the electric charge of these

Reference curves for pediatric endocrinology: leveraging biomarker z-scores for clinical classifications
Context: Hormone reference intervals in pediatric endocrinology are traditionally partitioned by age and lack the framework for benchmarking
individual blood test results as normalized z-scores and plotting sequential measurements onto a chart. Reference curve modeling is applicable
to endocrine variables and represents a standardized method to account for variation with gender and age.
Objective: We aimed to establish gender-specifc biomarker reference curves for clinical use and benchmark associations between hormones,
pubertal phenotype, and body mass index (BMI).
Methods: Using cross-sectional population sample data from 2139 healthy Norwegian children and adolescents, we analyzed the pubertal
status, ultrasound measures of glandular breast tissue (girls) and testicular volume (boys), BMI, and laboratory measurements of 17 clinical biomarkers modeled using the established “LMS” growth chart algorithm in R.
Results: Reference curves for puberty hormones and pertinent biomarkers were modeled to adjust for age and gender. Z-score equivalents
of biomarker levels and anthropometric measurements were compiled in a comprehensive beta coeffcient matrix for each gender. Excerpted
from this analysis and independently of age, BMI was positively associated with female glandular breast volume (β = 0.5, P < 0.001) and leptin
(β = 0.6, P < 0.001), and inversely correlated with serum levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) (β = −0.4, P < 0.001). Biomarker z-score
profles differed signifcantly between cohort subgroups stratifed by puberty phenotype and BMI weight class.
<p<Conclusion: Biomarker reference curves and corresponding z-scores provide an intuitive framework for clinical implementation in pediatric
endocrinology and facilitate the application of machine learning classifcation and covariate precision medicine for pediatric patients
The detection of neutrino interactions in the emulsion/lead target of the OPERA experiment
The OPERA neutrino detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS)
was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in
appearance mode through the study of oscillations. The
apparatus consists of an emulsion/lead target complemented by electronic
detectors and it is placed in the high energy long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam
(CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were
successfully carried out in 2007 and 2008 with the detector fully operational
with its related facilities for the emulsion handling and analysis. After a
brief description of the beam and of the experimental setup we report on the
collection, reconstruction and analysis procedures of first samples of neutrino
interaction events
Strange Meson Enhancement in PbPb Collisions
The NA44 Collaboration has measured yields and differential distributions of
K+, K-, pi+, pi- in transverse kinetic energy and rapidity, around the
center-of-mass rapidity in 158 A GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. A
considerable enhancement of K+ production per pi is observed, as compared to
p+p collisions at this energy. To illustrate the importance of secondary hadron
rescattering as an enhancement mechanism, we compare strangeness production at
the SPS and AGS with predictions of the transport model RQMD.Comment: 11 pages, including 4 figures, LATE
Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations in the hard scattering regime at RHIC
Azimuthal anisotropy () and two-particle angular correlations of high
charged hadrons have been measured in Au+Au collisions at
=130 GeV for transverse momenta up to 6 GeV/c, where hard
processes are expected to contribute significantly. The two-particle angular
correlations exhibit elliptic flow and a structure suggestive of fragmentation
of high partons. The monotonic rise of for GeV/c is
consistent with collective hydrodynamical flow calculations. At \pT>3 GeV/c a

Azimuthal anisotropy of K0S and Lambda + Lambda -bar production at midrapidity from Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=130 GeV
We report STAR results on the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v2 for strange particles K0S, Lambda , and Lambda -bar at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=130 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The value of v2 as a function of transverse momentum, pt, of the produced particle and collision centrality is presented for both particles up to pt~3.0 GeV/c. A strong pt dependence in v2 is observed up to 2.0 GeV/c. The v2 measurement is compared with hydrodynamic model calculations. Emulsion sheet doublets as interface trackers for the OPERA experiment
New methods for efficient and unambiguous interconnection between electronic
counters and target units based on nuclear photographic emulsion films have
been developed. The application to the OPERA experiment, that aims at detecting
oscillations between mu neutrino and tau neutrino in the CNGS neutrino beam, is
reported in this paper. In order to reduce background due to latent tracks
collected before installation in the detector, on-site large-scale treatments
of the emulsions ("refreshing") have been applied. Changeable Sheet (CSd)
packages, each made of a doublet of emulsion films, have been designed,
assembled and coupled to the OPERA target units ("ECC bricks"). A device has
been built to print X-ray spots for accurate interconnection both within the
CSd and between the CSd and the related ECC brick. Sample emulsion films have
been extensively scanned with state-of-the-art automated optical microscopes.
Efficient track-matching and powerful background rejection have been achieved
in tests with electronically tagged penetrating muons. Further improvement of
in-doublet film alignment was obtained by matching the pattern of low-energy
electron tracks. The commissioning of the overall OPERA alignment procedure is
