Asymptotic states and -matrix operator in de Sitter ambient space formalism
Within the de Sitter ambient space framework, the two different bases of the
one-particle Hilbert space of the de Sitter group algebra are presented for the
scalar case. Using field operator algebra and its Fock space construction in
this formalism, we discuss the existence of asymptotic states in de Sitter QFT
under an extension of the adiabatic hypothesis and prove the Fock space
completeness theorem for the massive scalar field. We define the quantum state
in the limit of future and past infinity on the Sitter hyperboloid in an
observer-independent way. These results allow us to examine the existence of
the -matrix operator for de Sitter QFT in ambient space formalism, a
question usually obscure in spacetime with a cosmological event horizon for a
specific observer. Some similarities and differences between QFT in Minkowski
and de Sitter spaces are discussed.Comment: 21 page
There are no multiply-perfect Fibonacci numbers
Here, we show that no Fibonacci number (larger than 1) divides the sum of its divisors
Derivation of nearest-neighbor DNA parameters in magnesium from single-molecule experiments
DNA hybridization is an essential molecular reaction in biology with many applications. The nearest-neighbor (NN) model for nucleic acids predicts DNA thermodynamics using energy values for the different base pair motifs. These values have been derived from melting experiments in monovalent and divalent salt and applied to predict melting temperatures of oligos within a few degrees. However, an improved determination of the NN energy values and their salt dependencies in magnesium is still needed for current biotechnological applications seeking high selectivity in the hybridization of synthetic DNAs. We developed a methodology based on single molecule unzipping experiments to derive accurate NN energy values and initiation factors for DNA. A new set of values in magnesium is derived, which reproduces unzipping data and improves melting temperature predictions for all available oligo lengths, in a range of temperature and salt conditions where correlation effects between the magnesium bound ions are weak. The NN salt correction parameters are shown to correlate to the GC content of the NN motifs. Our study shows the power of single-molecule force spectroscopy assays to unravel novel features of nucleic acids such as sequence-dependent salt corrections

Is phytoextraction a suitable green treatment for metal-contaminated sediments ?
International audienceThe cleaning of waterways by regular dredging generates great volumes of sediments and, owing to human activities, these sediments often contain large amounts of metals. These materials are usually spread on landfill sites. Phytoremediation could be a stategy for the reclamation of these polluted sediments. To our knowledge, phytoextraction with hyperaccumulating plants has been few tested on contaminated sediment. This work focuses on the mechanisms of Cd accumulation in Arabidopsis halleri, a Cd and Zn hyperaccumulator, and the effects of this species on a metal polluted sediment
Dynamic force spectroscopy of DNA hairpins. I. Force kinetics and free energy landscapes
We investigate the thermodynamics and kinetics of DNA hairpins that
fold/unfold under the action of applied mechanical force. We introduce the
concept of the molecular free energy landscape and derive simplified
expressions for the force dependent Kramers-Bell rates. To test the theory we
have designed a specific DNA hairpin sequence that shows two-state cooperative
folding under mechanical tension and carried out pulling experiments using
optical tweezers. We show how we can determine the parameters that characterize
the molecular free energy landscape of such sequence from rupture force kinetic
studies. Finally we combine such kinetic studies with experimental
investigations of the Crooks fluctuation relation to derive the free energy of
formation of the hairpin at zero force.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure
Does social context impact metacognition? Evidence from stereotype threat in a visual search task
While recent studies have emphasized the role of metacognitive judgments in social interactions, whether social context might reciprocally impact individualsâ metacognition remains
an open question. It has been proposed that such might be the case in situations involving
stereotype threat. Here, we provide the first empirical test of this hypothesis. Using a visual
search task, we asked participants, on a trial-by-trial basis, to monitor the unfolding and
accuracy of their search processes, and we developed a computational model to measure
the accuracy of their metacognition. Results indicated that stereotype threat enhanced
metacognitive monitoring of both outcomes and processes. Our study thus shows that
social context can actually affect metacognition
Coherent state quantization of a particle in de Sitter space
We present a coherent state quantization of the dynamics of a relativistic
test particle on a one-sheet hyperboloid embedded in a three-dimensional
Minkowski space. The group SO_0(1,2) is considered to be the symmetry group of
the system. Our procedure relies on the choice of coherent states of the motion
on a circle. The coherent state realization of the principal series
representation of SO_0(1,2) seems to be a new result.Comment: Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, vol. 37, in pres
