    An Absence of Radio-Loud Active Galactic Nuclei in Geometrically Flat Quiescent Galaxies: Implications for Maintenance-Mode Feedback Models

    Maintenance-mode feedback from low-accretion rate AGN, manifesting itself observationally through radio-loudness, is invoked in all cosmological galaxy formation models as a mechanism that prevents excessive star-formation in massive galaxies (M_* \gtrsim 3×\times1010^{10} M_{\odot}). We demonstrate that at a fixed mass the incidence of radio-loud AGN (L >> 1023^{23} WHz1^{- 1}) identified in the FIRST and NVSS radio surveys among a large sample of quiescent (non-star forming) galaxies selected from the SDSS is much higher in geometrically round galaxies than in geometrically flat, disk-like galaxies. As found previously, the RL AGN fraction increases steeply with stellar velocity dispersion σ\sigma_* and stellar mass, but even at a fixed velocity dispersion of 200-250 kms1^{-1} this fraction increases from 0.3% for flat galaxies (projected axis ratio of q << 0.4) to 5% for round galaxies (q >> 0.8). We rule out that this strong trend is due to projection effects in the measured velocity dispersion. The large fraction of radio-loud AGN in massive, round galaxies is consistent with the hypothesis that such AGN deposit energy into their hot gaseous halos, preventing cooling and star-formation. However, the absence of such AGN in disk-like quiescent galaxies -- most of which are not satellites in massive clusters, raises important questions: is maintenance-mode feedback a generally valid explanation for quiescence; and, if so, how does that feedback avoid manifesting at least occasionally as a radio-loud galaxy?Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    Heritability of cortisol response to confinement stress in European sea bass dicentrarchus labrax

    Background: In fish, the most studied production traits in terms of heritability are body weight or growth, stress or disease resistance, while heritability of cortisol levels, widely used as a measure of response to stress, is less studied. In this study, we have estimated heritabilities of two growth traits (body weight and length) and of cortisol response to confinement stress in the European sea bass. Findings: The F1 progeny analysed (n = 922) belonged to a small effective breeding population with contributions from an unbalanced family structure of just 10 males and 2 females. Heritability values ranged from 0.54 (+/- 0.21) for body weight to 0.65 (+/- 0.22) for standard body length and were low for cortisol response i.e. 0.08 (+/- 0.06). Genetic correlations were positive (0.94) between standard body length and body weight and negative between cortisol and body weight and between cortisol and standard body length (-0.60 and -0.55, respectively). Conclusion: This study confirms that in European sea bass, heritability of growth-related traits is high and that selection on such traits has potential. However, heritability of cortisol response to stress is low in European sea bass and since it is known to vary greatly among species, further studies are necessary to understand the reasons for these differences

    Selected nondigestible carbohydrates and prebiotics support the growth of probiotic fish bacteria mono-cultures in vitro

    To search for nondigestible but fermentable (NDF) carbohydrates and prebiotics with a potency to promote the growth of selected bacteria in vitro. The growth of three reference bacteria strains Bacillus subtilis LMG 7135(T), Carnobacterium piscicola LMG 9839, Lactobacillus plantarum LMG 9211 and one candidate probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis was investigated over a minimum period of 48 h in the presence of beta-glucan, xylo-oligosaccharide, arabinoxylo-oligosaccharide, inulin, oligofructose and glucose. Besides the capability to grow on inulin and oligofructose containing media, a distinct high growth in beta-glucan based substrates and a low growth in (arabino)xylooligosaccharide containing media were evident for most bacteria tested. With the exception of B. subtilis and L. plantarum, other bacteria grew equally well or even better on different substrates than on glucose. The fermentation of studied carbohydrates by these micro-organisms was dominated by the production of acetic acid as the main short chain fatty acid. Selected bacteria are able to ferment and grow on NDF and prebiotic carbohydrates but in a substrate dependent manner. This study delivers a first screening of which NDF or prebiotic carbohydrates are the most promising for aquaculture feed supplementations

    Longitudinal correlations between intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI during radiotherapy in prostate cancer patients

    Purpose: Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) is a promising technique that can acquire perfusion information without the use of contrast agent, contrary to the more established dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) technique. This is of interest for treatment response monitoring, where patients can be imaged on each treatment fraction. In this study, longitudinal correlations between IVIM- and DCE parameters were assessed in prostate cancer patients receiving radiation treatment.Materials and Methods: 20 prostate cancer patients were treated on a 1.5 T MR-linac with 20 x 3 or 3.1 Gy. Weekly IVIM and DCE scans were acquired. Tumors, the peripheral zone (PZ), and the transition zone (TZ) were delineated on a T2-weighted scan acquired on the first fraction. IVIM and DCE scans were registered to this scan and the delineations were propagated. Median values from these delineations were used for further analysis. The IVIM parameters D, f, D* and the product fD* were calculated. The Tofts model was used to calculate the DCE parameters Ktrans, kep and ve. Pearson correlations were calculated for the IVIM and DCE parameters on values from the first fraction for each region of interest (ROI). For longitudinal analysis, the repeated measures correlation coefficient was used to determine correlations between IVIM and DCE parameters in each ROI.Results: When averaging over patients, an increase during treatment in all IVIM and DCE parameters was observed in all ROIs, except for D in the PZ and TZ. No significant Pearson correlations were found between any pair of IVIM and DCE parameters measured on the first fraction. Significant but low longitudinal correlations were found for some combinations of IVIM and DCE parameters in the PZ and TZ, while no significant longitudinal correlations were found in the tumor. Notably in the TZ, for both f and fD*, significant longitudinal correlations with all DCE parameters were found.Conclusions: The increase in IVIM- and DCE parameters when averaging over patients indicates a measurable response to radiation treatment with both techniques. Although low, significant longitudinal correlations were found which suggests that IVIM could potentially be used as an alternative to DCE for treatment response monitoring.</p

    The oncological outcomes of isolated limb perfusion and neo-adjuvant radiotherapy in soft tissue sarcoma patients:A nationwide multicenter study

    Introduction: Patients with locally extensive high-grade extremity soft tissue sarcomas (eSTS) are often presented in multidisciplinary teams to decide between ablative surgery (amputation) or limb-salvage surgery supplemented with either neo-adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) or induction isolated limb perfusion (ILP). In The Netherlands, ILP typically aims to reduce the size of tumors that would otherwise be considered irresectable, whereas neo-adjuvant RT aims mainly at improving local control and reducing morbidity of required marginal margins. This study presents a 15-year nationwide cohort to describe the oncological outcomes of both pre-operative treatment strategies. Methods: All consecutive patients with locally extensive primary high-grade eSTS surgically treated between 2000 and 2015 at five tertiary sarcoma centers that received neo-adjuvant ILP or RT were included. 169 patients met the inclusion criteria (89 ILP, 80 RT). Median follow-up was 7.3 years. Results: Limb salvage was achieved in 84% of cases in the ILP group (80% for patients with amputation indication) and 96% of cases in the RT group. 5-Year overall survival was 47% in the ILP group, 69% in the RT group. 5-Year local recurrence rate was 14% in the ILP group, 10% in the RT group. Distant metastasis rate was 55% in the ILP group, 36% in the RT group. Conclusion: We find oncological outcomes and limb salvage rates in line with existing literature for both treatment modalities. Whether the tumor was locally advanced with an indication for induction therapy to prevent amputation or morbid surgery appeared to be the main determinant in choosing between neo-adjuvant ILP or RT

    State work and the testing concours of citizenship

    Anyone trying to be a citizen has to pass through a set of practices trying to be a state. This paper investigates some of the ways testing practices calibrate citizens, and in doing so, perform “the state.” The paper focuses on three forms of citizenship testing, which it considers exemplary forms of “state work,” and which all, in various ways, concern “migration.” First, the constitution of a “border crossing,” which requires an identity test configured by deceptibility. Second, the Dutch asylum process, in which “being gay” can, in certain cases, be reason for being granted asylum, but where “being gay” is also the outcome of an examination organized by suspicion. And third, the Dutch measurement of immigrants’ “integration,” which is comprised of a testing process in which such factishes as “being a member of society” and “being modern” surface. Citizenship is analyzed in this paper as accrued and (re)configured along a migration trajectory that takes shape as a testing concours, meaning that subjects become citizens along a trajectory of testing practices. In contributing both to work on states and citizenship, and to work on testing, this paper thus puts forward the concept of citizenship testing as state work, where “state work is the term for that kind of labor that most knows itself as comparison, equivalency, and exchange in the social realm” (Harney, 2002, pp. 10–11). Throughout the testing practices discussed here, comparison, equivalency, and exchange figure prominently as the practical achievements of crafting states and citizens

    Dust Attenuation Curves at z ~ 0.8 from LEGA-C:Precise Constraints on the Slope and 2175Å Bump Strength

    We present a novel approach to measure the attenuation curves of 485 individual star-forming galaxies with M* > 1010 M⊙ based on deep optical spectra from the VLT/VIMOS LEGA-C survey and multi-band photometry in the COSMOS field. Most importantly, we find that the attenuation curves in the rest-frame 3000-4500 Å range are typically almost twice as steep as the Milky Way, LMC, SMC, and Calzetti attenuation curves, which is in agreement with recent studies of the integrated light of present-day galaxies. The attenuation at 4500 Å and the slope strongly correlate with the galaxy inclination: face-on galaxies show less attenuation and steeper curves compared to edge-on galaxies, suggesting that geometric effects dominate observed variations in attenuation. Our new method produces 2175 Å UV bump detections for 260 individual galaxies. Even though obvious correlations between UV bump strength and global galaxy properties are absent, strong UV bumps are most often seen in face-on, lower-mass galaxies (10 < log10(M*/M⊙) < 10.5) with low overall attenuation. Finally, we produce a typical attenuation curve for star-forming galaxies at z ~ 0.8; this prescription represents the effect of dust on the integrated spectral energy distributions of high-redshift galaxies more accurately than commonly used attenuation laws

    Rejuvenation in z~0.8 quiescent galaxies in LEGA-C

    We use reconstructed star-formation histories (SFHs) of quiescent galaxies at z = 0.6 − 1 in the LEGA-C survey to identify secondary star-formation episodes that, after an initial period of quiescence, moved the galaxies back to the star-forming main sequence (blue cloud). 16 ± 3% of the z ∼ 0.8 quiescent population has experienced such rejuvenation events in the redshift range 0.7 < z < 1.5 after reaching quiescence at some earlier time. On average, these galaxies first became quiescent at z = 1.2, and those that rejuvenated, remained quiescent for ∼ 1Gyr before their secondary SF episode which lasted ∼ 0.7Gyr. The stellar mass attributed to rejuvenation is on average 10% of the galaxy stellar mass, with rare instances of an increase of more than a factor 2. Overall, rejuvenation events only contribute ∼ 2% of the total stellar mass in z ∼ 0.8 quiescent galaxies and we conclude that rejuvenation is not an important evolutionary channel when considering the growth of the red sequence. However, our results complicate the interpretation of galaxy demographics in color space: the galaxies with rejuvenation events tend to lie in the so-called ‘green valley’, yet their progenitors were quiescent at z ∼ 2
