A Typed Lambda Calculus with Intersection Types
AbstractIntersection types are well known to type theorists mainly for two reasons. Firstly, they type all and only the strongly normalizable lambda terms. Secondly, the intersection type operator is a meta-level operator, that is, there is no direct logical counterpart in the Curry–Howard isomorphism sense. In particular, its meta-level nature implies that it does not correspond to the intuitionistic conjunction. The intersection type system is naturally a type inference system (system à la Curry), but the meta-level nature of the intersection operator does not allow to easily design an equivalent typed system (system à la Church). There are many proposals in the literature to design such systems, but none of them gives an entirely satisfactory answer to the problem. In this paper, we will review the main results in the literature both on the logical interpretation of intersection types and on proposed typed lambda calculi. The core of this paper is a new proposal for a true intersection typed lambda calculus, without any meta-level notion. Namely, any typable term (in the intersection type inference) has a corresponding typed term (which is the same as the untyped term by erasing the type decorations and the typed term constructors) with the same type, and vice versa. The main idea is to introduce a relevant parallel term constructor which corresponds to the intersection type constructor, in such a way that terms in parallel share the same resources, that is, the same context of free typed variables. Three rules allow us to generate all typed terms. The first two rules, Application and Lambda-abstraction, are performed on all the components of a parallel term in a synchronized way. Finally, via the third rule of Local Renaming, once a free typed variable is bounded by lambda-abstraction, each of the terms in parallel can do its local renaming, with type refinement, of that particular resource
Network-aware Evaluation Environment for Reputation Systems
Parties of reputation systems rate each other and use ratings to compute reputation scores that drive their interactions. When deciding which reputation model to deploy in a network environment, it is important to find the
most suitable model and to determine its right initial configuration. This calls for an engineering approach for describing, implementing and evaluating reputation
systems while taking into account specific aspects of both the reputation systems and the networked environment where they will run. We present a software tool (NEVER) for network-aware evaluation of reputation systems and their rapid prototyping through experiments performed according to user-specified parameters. To demonstrate effectiveness of NEVER, we analyse reputation models based on the beta distribution and the maximum likelihood estimation
Evidence of spontaneous spin polarized transport in magnetic nanowires
The exploitation of the spin in charge-based systems is opening revolutionary
opportunities for device architecture. Surprisingly, room temperature
electrical transport through magnetic nanowires is still an unresolved issue.
Here, we show that ferromagnetic (Co) suspended atom chains spontaneously
display an electron transport of half a conductance quantum, as expected for a
fully polarized conduction channel. Similar behavior has been observed for Pd
(a quasi-magnetic 4d metal) and Pt (a non-magnetic 5d metal). These results
suggest that the nanowire low dimensionality reinforces or induces magnetic
behavior, lifting off spin degeneracy even at room temperature and zero
external magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps fig
Size-dependent bandgap and particle size distribution of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals
A new analytical expression for the size-dependent bandgap of colloidal
semiconductor nanocrystals is proposed within the framework of the finite-depth
square-well effective mass approximation in order to provide a quantitative
description of the quantum confinement effect. This allows one to convert
optical spectroscopic data (photoluminescence spectrum and absorbance edge)
into accurate estimates for the particle size distributions of colloidal
systems even if the traditional effective mass model is expected to fail, which
occurs typically for very small particles belonging to the so-called strong
confinement limit. By applying the reported theoretical methodologies to CdTe
nanocrystals synthesized through wet chemical routes, size distributions are
inferred and compared directly to those obtained from atomic force microscopy
and transmission electron microscopy. This analysis can be used as a
complementary tool for the characterization of nanocrystal samples of many
other systems such as the II-VI and III-V semiconductor materials.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

Early germline differentiation in bivalves: TDRD7 as a candidate investigational unit for Ruditapes philippinarum germ granule assembly
The germline is a key feature of sexual animals and the ways in which it separates from the soma differ widely across Metazoa. However, at least at some point during germline differentiation, some cytoplasmic supramolecular structures (collectively called germ plasm-related structures) are present and involved in its specification and/or differentiation. The factors involved in the assembly of these granular structures are various and non-ubiquitous among animals, even if some functional patterns and the presence of certain domains appear to be shared among some. For instance, the LOTUS domain is shared by Oskar, the Holometabola germ plasm master regulator, and some Tudor-family proteins assessed as being involved in the proper assembly of germ granules of different animals. Here, we looked for the presence of LOTUS-containing proteins in the transcriptome of Ruditapes philippinarum (Bivalvia). Such species is of particular interest because it displays annual renewal of gonads, sided by the renewal of germline differentiation pathways. Moreover, previous works have identified in its early germ cells cytoplasmic granules containing germline determinants. We selected the orthologue of TDRD7 as a candidate involved in the early steps of germline differentiation through bioinformatic predictions and immunohistological patterning (immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence). We observed the expression of the protein in putative precursors of germline cells, upstream to the germline marker Vasa. This, added to the fact that orthologues of this protein are involved in the assembly of germ granules in mouse, zebrafish, and fly, makes it a worthy study unit for investigations on the formation of such structures in bivalves
Observation of the Smallest Metal Nanotube with Square-cross-section
Understanding the mechanical properties of nanoscale systems requires a range
of measurement techniques and theoretical approaches to gather the relevant
physical and chemical information. The arrangements of atoms in nanostructures
and macroscopic matter can be different, principally due to the role of surface
energy, but the interplay between atomic and electronic structure in
association with applied mechanical stress can also lead to surprising
differences. For example, metastable structures such as suspended chains of
atoms and helical wires have been produced by the stretching of metal
junctions. Here we report the spontaneous formation of the smallest possible
metal nanotube with a square cross-section during the elongation of silver
nanocontacts. Ab initio calculations and molecular simulations indicate that
the hollow wire forms because this configuration allows the surface energy to
be minimized, and also generates a soft structure capable of absorbing a huge
tensile deformation
Quantum Conductance in Silver Nanowires: correlation between atomic structure and transport properties
We have analyzed the atomic arrangements and quantum conductance of silver
nanowires generated by mechanical elongation. The surface properties of Ag
induce unexpected structural properties, as for example, predominance of high
aspect ratio rod-like wires. The structural behavior was used to understand the
Ag quantum conductance data and the proposed correlation was confirmed by means
of theoretical calculations. These results emphasize that the conductance of
metal point contacts is determined by the preferred atomic structures and, that
atomistic descriptions are essential to interpret the quantum transport
behavior of metal nanostructures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
On the Optimum Long Baseline for the Next Generation Neutrino Oscillation Experiments
For high energy long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, we propose a
Figure of Merit criterion to compare the statistical quality of experiments at
various oscillation distances under the condition of identical detectors and a
given neutrino beam. We take into account all possible experimental errors
under general consideration. In this way the Figure of Merit is closely related
to the usual statistical criterion of number of sigmas. We use a realistic
neutrino beam for an entry level neutrino factory and a possible superbeam from
a meson source and a 100 kt detector for the calculation. We considered in
detail four oscillation distances, 300 km, 700 km, 2100 km and 3000 km, in the
neutrino energy range of 0.5-20 GeV for a 20 GeV entry level neutrino factory
and a 50 GeV superbeam. We found that the very long baselines of 2100 km and
3000 km are preferred for the neutrino factory according to the figure of merit
criterion. Our results also show that, for a neutrino factory, lower primary
muon energies such as 20 GeV are preferred rather than higher ones such as 30
or 50 GeV. For the superbeam, the combination of a long baseline such as 300 km
and a very long baseline like 2100 km will form a complete measurement of the
oscillation parameters besides the CP phase. To measure the CP phase in a
superbeam, a larger detector (a factor 3 beyond what is considered in this
article) and/or a higher intensity beam will be needed to put some significant
constraints on the size of the CP angle.Comment: 21 LaTeX pages, 13 PS figures, typos corrected, references adde
