    : Apothecary is a highly regulated and competitive industry due to less differentiation and high density in certain areas. Interestingly, the performance of apothecaries is heterogeneous; and based on market orientation perspective we argue that the condition exists due to different level on responding competitors\u27 actions as well as customers\u27 needs. Further, we argue that managers\u27 entrepreneurial orientation can strengthen these relationships. The mechanism of how can apothecaries develop their responsiveness to competitors and customers also is investigated. We distributed questionnaires among apopthecary managers in Surabaya and generated 131 responses. By using PLS, the results indicate that responsiveness to competitors positively influence on their performance, while responsiveness to customers is not. The moderating effect of entrepreneurial orientation is also not confirmed. Responsiveness to competitors is highly determined by cognitive and affective organizational system, while responsiveness to customers mainly determined by affective organizational system. Managerial and academic implications are further discussed in this paper

    Wide parameter search for isolated pulsars using the Hough transform

    We use the Hough transform to analyze data from the second science run of the LIGO interferometers, to look for gravitational waves from isolated pulsars. We search over the whole sky and over a large range of frequencies and spin-down parameters. Our search method is based on the Hough transform, which is a semi-coherent, computationally efficient, and robust pattern recognition technique.     “I don’t use a condom (with my regular partner) because I know that I’m faithful, but with everyone else I do”: The cultural and socioeconomic determinants of sexual partner concurrency in young South Africans

    Finding ways to reduce the high rates of sexual partner concurrency is increasingly believed to be vital to controlling HIV spread in southern Africa. We describe the frequency and correlates of sexual partner concurrency in a representative sample of 3 324 young South Africans aged 14-25. Of the 2 468 individuals who were sexually active 21% had engaged in concurrent sexual partnerships. Multivariate analysis revealed that concurrency was more common with males, Africans, those who knew their partner had anotherpartner, early age of sexual debut, four or more lifetime sexual partners, alcohol consumption, and self-perception of being at high risk for acquisition of HIV. If the respondent’s partner knew his or her friends (termed high structural embeddedness) this was associated with a 52% reduction in concurrency rates. There are significant differences in both the rates of concurrency and the risk factors underpinning these in the different racial/ethnic groups. Analysis of these underlying determinants suggests that cultural rather than socioeconomic factors predominate, which has important implications for the design and targeting of prevention efforts

    Elastic constants of beta-eucryptite: A density functional theory study

    The five independent elastic constants of hexagonal β\beta-eucryptite have been determined using density functional theory (DFT) total energy calculations. The calculated values agree well, to within 15%, with the experimental data. Using the calculated elastic constants, the linear compressibility of β\beta-eucryptite parallel to the c-axis, χc\chi_c, and perpendicular to it, χa\chi_a, have been evaluated. These values are in close agreement to those obtained from experimentally known elastic constants, but are in contradiction to the direct measurements based on a three-terminal technique. The calculated compressibility parallel to the c-axis was found to positive as opposed to the negative value obtained by direct measurements. We have demonstrated that χc\chi_c must be positive and discussed the implications of a positive χc\chi_c in the context of explaining the negative bulk thermal expansion of β\beta-eucryptite.Comment: 3 eps figures, submitted for publicatio

    Regulation of transcript elongation through cooperative and ordered recruitment of cofactors

    We studied the regulation of murine CD80, a gene whose basal transcriptional status was characterized by the presence of a stalled RNA polymerase II complex on the promoter-proximal region. Stimulus-induced activation of productive elongation involved a complex interplay of regulated events that included a synergy between ordered cofactor recruitment. This cascade of recruitments was initiated through the engagement of transcription factor NF-ÎşB, leading to the temporal association of histone acetyltransferases and the consequent selective acetylation of a transcription start site downstream nucleosome. This in turn culminated into the nucleosomal association of Brd4-associated P-TEFb, a protein complex containing kinase specific for serine 2 of Rbp 1, the largest subunit of the carboxyl-terminal domain of RNA polymerase II. The consequent phosphorylation of serine 2 residues in CTD by CDK9 in the P-TEFb complex then facilitated escape of polymerase II into the productive elongation phase. Thus, the cooperative mechanisms that integrate between independent pathways characterize regulation of the elongation step of transcription, thereby providing another level at which specificity of gene regulation can be achieved

    Transcription regulation from a TATA and INR-less promoter: spatial segregation of promoter function

    The mode of regulation of class II genes that lack the known core promoter elements is presently unclear. Here, we studied one such example, the murine CD80 gene. An unusual mechanism was revealed wherein the pre-initiation complex (PIC) first assembled on an upstream, NF-ÎşB enhancer element. Notably, this assembly occurred independent of contributions from the core promoter domain, and resulted in a PIC that was competent for transcription initiation. Positioning was subsequently achieved by exploiting the intrinsic architecture of the promoter, by virtue of which the tethered PIC was spatially juxtaposed with the transcription initiation site. Bridging interactions then ensued, through protein-protein contacts, which then enabled the elongation phase of CD80 transcription

    An Alternative Active Site Architecture for O2 Activation in the Ergothioneine Biosynthetic EgtB from Chloracidobacterium thermophilum

    Sulfoxide synthases are nonheme iron enzymes that catalyze oxidative carbon-sulfur bond formation between cysteine derivatives and N-α-trimethylhistidine as a key step in the biosynthesis of thiohistidines. The complex catalytic mechanism of this enzyme reaction has emerged as the controversial subject of several biochemical and computational studies. These studies all used the structure of the γ-glutamyl cysteine utilizing sulfoxide synthase, MthEgtB from Mycobacterium thermophilum (EC 1.14.99.50), as a structural basis. To provide an alternative model system, we have solved the crystal structure of CthEgtB from Chloracidobacterium thermophilum (EC 1.14.99.51) that utilizes cysteine as a sulfur donor. This structure reveals a completely different configuration of active site residues that are involved in oxygen binding and activation. Furthermore, comparison of the two EgtB structures enables a classification of all ergothioneine biosynthetic EgtBs into five subtypes, each characterized by unique active-site features. This active site diversity provides an excellent platform to examine the catalytic mechanism of sulfoxide synthases by comparative enzymology, but also raises the question as to why so many different solutions to the same biosynthetic problem have emerged
