In the quest of vision-sensors-on-chip: Pre-processing sensors for data reduction

    Get PDF
This paper shows that the implementation of vision systems benefits from the usage of sensing front-end chips with embedded pre-processing capabilities - called CVIS. Such embedded pre-processors reduce the number of data to be delivered for ulterior processing. This strategy, which is also adopted by natural vision systems, relaxes system-level requirements regarding data storage and communications and enables highly compact and fast vision systems. The paper includes several proof-o-concept CVIS chips with embedded pre-processing and illustrate their potential advantages. © 2017, Society for Imaging Science and Technology.

    Get PDF

Temporal statistics of the beam-wander contribution to scintillation in ground-to-satellite optical links

    Get PDF
The beam-wander contribution to the scintillation in a ground-to-satellite free-space optical link is one of major importance. An analytical model, based on the duality between beam wander and angle-of-arrival fluctuations, is proposed for the temporal statistics. The expression of the probability density function of the log-amplitude fluctuations is first obtained. Then, the expressions of the spatial and temporal autocovariances are also obtained. We present plots of the beam-wander contribution to the logamplitude variance, as a function of the transmitter aperture size and the turbulence accumulated in the propagation path. We also present the angular fluctuation and log-amplitude scintillation spectrum plots for some selected cases. © 2005 Optical Society of AmericaPostprint (published version

    Get PDF
We have reviewed 163 trochanteric hip fractures treated during 2000 and 2001 with proximal femoral unreamed nail PFN. The following variables were analysed: age, gender, kina of hip fracture (AO classification); haemoglobin (Hb) and haematocrit (Hct) at the admission day, the day before surgery and two days later, transfusion needs, infection morbidity, total hospital stay and post surgical mortality (before 28 day). The 33% patients were diagnosed of post surgical infection, 44% of them were transfused. Women were transfused more than men. There were no differences by gender in haematocrit values at post surgical day. A post surgical infection as diagnosed in 51% of transfused patients, but only in 20% of non-transfused (p<0.001). The mortality rate was 43% if the post surgical Hb value was lower than 80 g/l. If Hb was higer 80 g/l the mortality rare was 24% in transfused patients but 5% in non-transfused ones (p<0.005). Conclusions: In the patients affected by trochanteric hip fracture the allogenic blood is associatetd with a higher rate of post surgical infection, higher mortality rate and longer hospital stays

Developing a practical guide for teaching histology: an evaluation of the didactic components

    Get PDF
The Didactic Guide is a valuable tool complementing and making learning more dynamic. It is done using creative didactic strategies that simulate the presence of the tutor and generate a dialogue in order to offer students different possibilities to improve their understanding and self-discovery learning. This way the student is the protagonist of his own learning process. In this context, is highly important to consider the self discovery learning as a goal facilitating significant learning. The use of practical guides enables students to manage their own time, goals, techniques, contents and evaluation. In medical histology teaching several models of didactic guides could be use, and they normally include numerous activities, text, questionnaires, pictures, and drawings that may enhance the effectiveness of this tool in the learning process. In this work we have evaluated the usefulnes of different sections of a histology didactic guide in order to determine the key sections that enhance the learning process in human histology. For this purpose, a practical histology guide was designed with different sections: message text, theoretical text, objectives, drawings, pictures, clinical cases, games, blank spaces for self notes and drawing and final self evaluation questions. First, a simple questionnaire was applied in 90 students enrolled in histology practical seccions to analyze the student´s perceptions and preferences related to the histology guide. Finally, for all questionnaires average results and standard deviations were calculated for each option and all participants, as well for each gender, separately. Comparisons were done for drawings vs drawing blank spaces, teoric content vs notes blank space, drawings vs pictures and for each gender separately using Mann-Whitney non-parametrical test. Our findings revealed that visual strategies such as images and pictures were considered to be more useful for learning histology in the practical session. Similary, the students rated the self evaluation questions and blank spaces for self notes and drawing to be more attractive to the students. However, texts with theoretical information, messages, objectives, and clinical cases revealed to be less useful for the students in the learning process of medical histology. Moreover, statistically significant differences between theoretical content vs notes blank space was observed. All these results point out the importance of including pictures and drawings in the practical guide accompained of blank spaces that allow the development of creativity and autonomy that lead the students into a self discovery learning. Interestingly the students do not appreciate the presence of theoretical background in the practical guide as relevant information for their academic formation in the practical session

Ethernet-based timing system for accelerator facilities: The IFMIF-DONES case

    Get PDF
This article presents the design of a timing system for accelerator facilities, which relies on a general networking approach based on standard Ethernet protocols that keeps all the devices synchronized to a common time reference. The case of the IFMIF-DONES infrastructure is studied in detail, providing a framework for the implementation of the timing system. The network time protocol (NTP) with software timestamping and the precision time protocol (PTP) with hardware timestamping are used to synchronize devices with sub-millisecond and sub-microsecond accuracy requirements, respectively. The design also considers the utilization of IEEE 1588 high accuracy default PTP profile (PTP-HA) to provide sub-nanosecond accuracy for the most demanding components. Three different solutions for the design of the timing system are discussed in detail. The first solution considers the deployment of one time-dedicated network for each synchronization protocol, while the second one proposes the integration of the synchronization data of NTP and PTP into the networks of the facility. The third solution relies on the single distribution of PTP-HA to all the systems. The final design aims to be fully based on standard technologies and to be cost-efficient, seeking for interoperability and scalability, and minimizing the impact on other systems in the facility. An experimental setup has been implemented to evaluate and discuss the suitability of the solutions for the timing system by studying the synchronization accuracy obtained with NTP, PTP and PTP-HA under different network conditions. It includes a timing evaluation platform that tries to resemble the network architecture foreseen in the facility. The measured results revealed that PTP is the most limiting protocol for the second solution. Using the default PTP configuration, it tolerates less than 20% of maximum bandwidth utilization for symmetric bidirectional flows, and around 30% in the case of unidirectional flows (server to client or client to server), with the current setup and using switches without enabled timing support. This case study provides a better understanding of the trade-off between bandwidth utilization, synchronization accuracy and cost in these kinds of facilities

A new forward-scatter visibility sensor based on a universal frequency-to-digital converter

Traffic delays attributable to weather conditions may cause an increase in fuel consumption and then an increase in CO2 emissions to the environment. Visibility reduction in roads due to dense fog is a main cause of traffic accidents and possible environmental pollution, hence the importance of deploying fog warning systems. In this article, we present a forward-scatter visibility sensor that uses a quasi-digital photodetector and a universal frequency-to-digital converter instead of a conventional analog-to-digital converter as data acquisition system. This feature has allowed the design of a low-cost, robust, and simple sensor-to-microcontroller interface as demanded by Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications. An optical system to limit light interference is proposed. The visibilimeter was calibrated from a self-calibrated transmissometer using the same frequency-to-digital technique. This new instrument is capable of a 41 662.5m visibility range detection and to transmit the information wirelessly to a 100m distance. The authors would like to thank the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana-Azcapotzalco and the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia for their support.Barrales Guadarrama, R.; Mocholí Salcedo, A.; Rodríguez Rodríguez, M.; Barrales Guadarrame, VR.; Vázquez Cerón, ER.
