Companies around the globe are embracing and adapting social media for many different intentions: customer service, marketing, internal communications, public relations or corporate social responsibility, etc. It is now a reality that social media is channging the way stakeholders and companies communicate daily, providing opportunities for collaboration, participation, interactivity, and engagement. Therefore, social media is conceived today in the corporate world as a strategic communication partner, driving new and unique possibilities for organizations to engage stakeholders in conversations. We are witnesses of a new digital era where consumers are becoming active users rather than passive individuals, changing dramatically how society operates. But these useful technological tools are employed widely and precisely by corporations in order to facilitate and improve communications? This research aims to discover the usage of different social media platforms by Puerto Rican companies. A content analysis was performed to the Facebook and Twitter official profiles of the top 400 locally owned Puerto Rican companies of 2009. The principal objective was to find if social media sites were mainly used as a strategic tool for corporate communication that can enhance stakeholder participation and engagement. Results showed that Puerto Rican companies are not employing social media platforms for improving communications with different stakeholders, failing to take advantage of the enormous possibilities that social media has for communication.Instituto de Investigación en Relaciones Pública

El presente proyecto constructivo trata el acondicionamiento de la carretera BV-5001 entre la rotonda de Santa Coloma y el final del polígono industrial del Bosc Llarg y les Canyes (aproximadamente del PK4+000 a PK5+400. Los objetivos del proyecto consisten en la mejora y adaptación de la vía al nuevo escenario. Algunos objetivos que se buscan son el fomento del transporte sostenible, la integración en el entorno local y la creación de nuevos espacios funcionales

Perspectiva i tasca pedagògiques des d'una mirada cognitiva

La pedagogía teórica se está aproximando a las ciencias cognitivas. Este camino se ha recorrido a partir de sus preocupaciones sistémicocibernéticas y gracias a un progresivo esfuerzo por abrirse a los enfoques, conceptos y problemas de otras disciplinas preocupadas por la cuestión del conocimiento, principalmente a los de la filosofía, la psicología, la tecnología y la neurociencia. Desde una perspectiva cognitiva se aprecia la necesidad de recuperar para la pedagogía el logos de la emoción y de la memoria y de su papel en la comprensión y resolución de escenarios y problemas educativos, así como de superar la artificial contraposición entre ciencia, arte y humanidades. Dotada de esta mirada, la pedagogía teórica aporta un mayor nivel de integración de las disciplinas pedagógicas y una mayor cercanía a los estudios sobre la cognición, la emoción, la memoria y el pensamiento al mismo tiempo que potencia la eficacia de las acciones sobre los procesos educativos. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ La pédagogie théorique se rapproche des sciences cognitives. L’article évalue, dans une perspective cognitive, la nécessité de récupérer pour la pédagogie le logos de l’émotion et de la mémoire ainsi que son rôle dans la compréhension et la résolution de scénarios et de problèmes éducatifs; et dépasser l’opposition artificielle entre science, art et humanités. This journey takes us from a preoccupation with cybernetic-systems, and thanks to a continuous effort to open itself up in its focus, to concepts and problems of other disciplines preoccupied by the question of knowledge, principally to philosophy, psychology, technology and neuroscience. From the cognitive perspective it appreciates how necessary it is for pedagogy to recover the logos of emotion and memory, and their role in the comprehension and resolution of educational situations and problems, in this way overcoming the false opposition between science, art, and the humanities. From this perspective, pedagogical theory carries a better level of integration of the pedagogical disciplines and a greater pertinence to studies of cognition, emotion, memory and thought, which at the same time encourage efficiency in the initiatives concerning educational processes

Labor supply of married women in Mexico: 1990-2000

In the last couple of decades, and in particular during the last couple of administrations, the Mexican government has implemented various social programs targeted specifically to women, such as PROGRESA/Oportunidades, a child care program, and a gender equality program (PROIGUALDAD). The impact that those programs may have on the work behavior of women largely depends on the form that the female labor supply takes, and in particular, on the labor supply elasticities with respect to own wages, and the husband’s wages. Despite this fact, the literature on female labor supply in Mexico is very scarce. To our knowledge, there is no estimate of the female labor supply elasticities at the national level. This paper fills in this gap in the literature. Using data from the 1990 and 2000 Mexican Census of Population, we estimate a structural model of labor supply through an application of Wooldridge’s (2002) threestep procedure. We …nd that the female labor supply elasticities had a rather sharp decrease between 1990 and 2000, which suggests that women are getting increasingly attached to the labor market. We also find evidence of heterogenous effects for women with young children and women of different cohorts. Even though female are now less responsive to changes in wages, the elasticities that we …nd are still large enough so that social programs aimed at modifying females´ work behavior through incentives might still be very successful.wage inequality, Mexico, labor supply, employment, married women

Aproximación al derecho islámico y su regulación del velo

El Derecho islámico o 'Sharia' es el sistema jurídico por el que se rige la comunidad de fieles musulmanes. Sus orígenes se sitúan en el siglo VI, fecha en que nace el Islam. Sus fuentes son el Corán (libro sagrado que contiene el mensaje divino), la Sunna (conjunto de relatos acerca de comentarios y comportamientos del Profeta Mahoma) y el fik (jurisprudencia generada a partir de las otras dos fuentes). Resulta erróneo identificar este Derecho religioso con los sistemas jurídicos de los países musulmanes. Uno de los objetivos de los movimientos islamistas es la vuelta a la 'Sharia' pero adaptada al momento histórico actual. Debido a su naturaleza personals, los preceptos de la 'Sharia' pueden entrar en conflicto con los de los ordenamientos territoriales, tal como ha sucedido en relación al uso del velo islámico. A éste se refiere el Derecho islámico en diversos apartados pero lo hace de modo ambiguo, sin afirmar con claridad su carácter obligatorio. ------ Islamic Law os 'Sharia' is the legal system by which the community of Muslim faithful is ruled. Its origins date back to the 6th century, when Islam is born. Its sources are the Coran (sacred book that contains the divine message), the Sunna (reports on the sayings and conduct of Muhammad) and the fik (group of laws created by the interpretation of the aforementioned ones). It is erroneous to identify this religious Law and the legal systems of the Muslim countries. One of the objectives of the Islamist movements is to return to the 'Sharia', but adapted to the present historical moment. Because of its personal nature, the 'Sharia' precepts might come into conflict with the ones on the territorial legal systems, just as it has happened in relation to Muslim veil. To this one refers the 'Sharia' in different sections, but it does it ambiguously, without affirm clearly its obligatory character

Using synchronization to improve earthquake forecasting in a cellular automaton model

A new forecasting strategy for stochastic systems is introduced. It is inspired by the concept of anticipated synchronization between pairs of chaotic oscillators, recently developed in the area of Dynamical Systems, and by the earthquake forecasting algorithms in which different pattern recognition functions are used for identifying seismic premonitory phenomena. In the new strategy, copies (clones) of the original system (the master) are defined, and they are driven using rules that tend to synchronize them with the master dynamics. The observation of definite patterns in the state of the clones is the signal for connecting an alarm in the original system that efficiently marks the impending occurrence of a catastrophic event. The power of this method is quantitatively illustrated by forecasting the occurrence of characteristic earthquakes in the so-called Minimalist Model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
