Skolens rapporterte problemer.

Horizontal distribution and overlap of planktivorous fish stocks in the Norwegian Sea during summers 1995–2006
The Norwegian Sea harbours several large pelagic fish stocks, which use the area for feeding during the summer. The period 1995–2006 had some of the highest biomass of pelagic fish feeding in the Norwegian Sea on record. Here we address the horizontal distribution and overlap between herring, blue whiting and mackerel in this period during the summers using a combination of acoustic, trawl and LIDAR data. A newly developed temperature atlas for the Norwegian Sea is used to present the horizontal fish distributions in relation to temperature. The centre of gravity of the herring distribution changed markedly several times during the investigated period. Blue whiting feeding habitat expanded in a northwestern direction until 2003, corresponding with an increase in abundance. Strong year classes of mackerel in 2001 and 2002 and increasing temperatures throughout the period resulted in an increased amount of mackerel in the Norwegian Sea. Mackerel was generally found in waters warmer than 8°C, while herring and blue whiting were mainly found in water masses between 2 and 8°C. The horizontal overlap between herring and mackerel was low, while blue whiting had a large horizontal overlap with both herring and mackerel. The changes in horizontal distribution and overlap between the species are explained by increasing stock sizes, increasing water temperature and spatially changing zooplankton densities in the Norwegian Sea

The effect of a 24-hour photoperiod on the survival, growth and swim bladder inflation of pre-flexion yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) larvae
The effects of two different continuous photoperiod regimes on survival, growth and swim bladder inflation of pre-flexion yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) larvae were investigated. Each photoperiod regime was tested twice with a different larval cohort to confirm the observed results. Trials 1 and 2 tested the effect of a reduced night-time light intensity (10-molesm-2s-1=30% of the daytime intensity) and found that those larvae reared for 8days under the 24h lighting (24-L) photoperiod exhibited a slight improvement in survival compared to those reared under the control photoperiod of 12h light (12-L), however these improvements were not significant. In addition, those larvae reared under this photoperiod regime were equal in length to those in the control. Trials 3 and 4 compared the same variables in larvae reared under a continuous photoperiod (24-L) with a constant light intensity of 30-molesm-2s-1, against those reared under the aforementioned 12-L photoperiod. Survival of larvae under the continuous photoperiods were 9±1% (n=2) and 10±2% (n=3) for Trials 3 and 4, respectively, compared to less than 1% in both control treatments; differences that in both cases were highly significant. In addition, in both trials larvae cultured under the 24-L photoperiod were significantly larger and exhibited more advanced development than those reared under the 12-L photoperiod, however swim bladder inflation was significantly lower. We suggest that the improved survival and growth achieved under a continuous photoperiod is due to the extended foraging time combined with the prevention of mortality caused by night-time sinking
The Relationships between Mood Disturbances and Pain, Hope, and Quality of Life in Hospitalized Cancer Patients with Pain on Regularly Scheduled Opioid Analgesic
Objective: The study purposes were to describe the percentage of patients in one of four mood groups (i.e., neither
anxiety nor depression [NEITHER], only anxiety [ANX], only depression [DEP], both anxiety and depression
[BOTH]) and to evaluate how differences in mood states are related to pain, hope, and quality of life (QOL).
Methods: Oncology inpatients (n=225) completed Brief Pain Inventory, Herth Hope Index (HHI), and the
European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core QOL Questionnaire-C30. Research nurses
completed Symptom Severity Checklist, Karnofsky Performance Status score, and medical record reviews. Data
were analyzed using x^2, Kruskal-Wallis, one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs), and analyses of covariance
(ANCOVA).
Results: Thirty-two percent of patients were categorized in the NEITHER group, 12% in the ANX group, 12% in
the DEP group, and 44% in the BOTH group. Younger patients and women were more likely to be in the BOTH
group. While only minimal differences were found among the mood groups on pain intensity scores, patients in
the NEITHER group in general, reported lower pain interference scores than those in the other three groups.
Significant differences were found in HHI scores between the patients in the NEITHER group and the BOTH
group. In addition, patients with both mood disorders reported significantly poorer QOL scores.
Conclusions: Because 44% of the patients had both anxiety and depression, clinicians need to evaluate patients
for the co-occurrence of these two symptoms, evaluate its impact on pain management, hope, and QOL, and
develop appropriate interventions to manage these symptoms
An insight into the reproductive biology of the bearded goby Sufflogobius bibarbatus
Preliminary results obtained from histological analyses of the male reproductive organs, supplemented
with field and behavioural data, indicate that Sufflogobius bibarbatus, a small, slow growing
gobiid exhibiting low fecundity, which plays an important role in the food web off Namibia, where
large areas of the shelf are hypoxic, spawns demersally. Large males defend benthic nests, possibly
at the edge of the hypoxic shelf. Male reproductive strategy appears to be flexible, and tentative
evidence to suggest that polygyny and sneaking may also occur is presented.Web of Scienc
Nurturing lifelong learning in communities through the National University of Lesotho: prospects and challenges
This paper analyses one aspect of a pan-African action research project called ITMUA (Implementing the Third Mission of Universities in Africa). This particular paper draws on the data from that project to explore the National University of Lesotho’s contribution to lifelong learning in its communities. It provides background information on the ITMUA initiative and analyses interview and focus group responses to two case studies in terms of their contribution to lifelong learning. It uses, as its analytical framework, a modified version of Mbigi’s African perspective on the four De Lors’ ‘pillars’, by adding a fifth pillar, courtesy of Torres. The paper argues that community engagement is a two-way process between universities and their wider constituencies with opportunities for mutual lifelong learning. But there are also challenges of understanding and process which must be addressed if the full range of these lifelong learning pillars is to be accommodated within African contexts. The paper provides an introduction to the history of community engagement in Africa as a university mission, followed by a brief discussion of lifelong learning within African perspectives. After describing the particular context of Lesotho, the concept of community service and community engagement in contemporary African contexts introduces the action research project and the case studies. The final part of the paper presents and discusses the research findings
Numerical Models for Dynamic Properties of a 14 Storey Timber Building
The world tallest timber building with height of 45 meters, is planned for Bergen, Norway. In this master thesis the dynamic properties of the case building, as proposed by Sweco and Artec, are investigated. The proposed structural concept with a glulam frame and power-storeys, have never previously been built, and it is desirable to develop and understanding of the dynamic problems concerning this building. Previous work have shown problems with acceleration levels for tall timber building, mostly due to the material properties of timber. Timber has high flexibility and strength combined with low weight. The main aim of the work have been to build a 3D-model of the case building in a finite element program, where numerical methods can be used to find the dynamic properties of the building. The wind load and acceleration levels are investigated, and found to be reasonable compared to various criterions presented. The effect of the stiffness in the connections, as well as the use of apartment modules are investigated. In addition a dynamic analysis is run, and stochastic subspace state space system identification is used to verify the model. This can later be used for verification of the actual building when finished, and will be an important method to determine the actual damping and stiffness. Based on the findings in this work, the concept is assumed feasible, possible with some changes an even better concept is achieved. It will be exciting to see how Sweco will develop the concept further in the next planning phase. KEYWORDS: dynamic response, timber buildings, system identification, acceleration requirement
Fair Allocation of Mixed Divisible and Indivisible Goods: A Comparative Study
This thesis addresses the challenge of fairly allocating mixed divisible and indivisible goods by adapting established algorithms from their respective fields, and creating naive polynomial time algorithms. The objective is to explore the effectiveness of these algorithms in solving the problem of mixed allocation in an attempt to bridge the gap to the more well studied field with only indivisible goods. Empirical experiments were conducted on randomly generated instances, evaluating metrics such as MaxiMinShare and Maximum Nash Welfare. The results demonstrate satisfactory outcomes in a majority of cases, suggesting the potential of adapting indivisible algorithms for mixed allocation problems. However, the scope of these results is limited to the conditions employed in this study, so further theoretical proofs are needed to establish the robustness and applicability of these algorithms across various scenarios. Nevertheless, this research provides valuable insights into the field of fair allocation of mixed goods
