A comparison of three data-poor stock assessment methods for the pink spiny lobster fishery in Mauritania

Several data-poor stock assessment methods have recently been proposed and applied to data-poor fisheries around the world. The Mauritanian pink spiny lobster fishery has a long history of boom and bust dynamics, with large landings, stock collapse, and years-long fishery closures, all happening several times. In this study, we have used catch, fishing efforts, and length-frequency data (LFD) obtained from the fishery in its most recent period of activity, 2015–2019, and historical annual catch records starting in 2006 to fit three data-poor stock assessment methods. These were the length-based Bayesian (LBB) method, which uses LFD exclusively, the Catch-only MSY (CMSY) method, using annual catch data and assumptions about stock resilience, and generalised depletion models in the R package CatDyn combined with Pella-Tomlinson biomass dynamics in a hierarchical inference framework. All threemethods presented the stock as overfished. The LBB method produced results that were very pessimistic about stock status but whose reliability was affected by non-constant recruitment. The CMSY method and the hierarchical combination of depletion and Pella-Tomlinson biomass dynamics produced more comparable results, such as similar sustainable harvest rates, but both were affected by large statistical uncertainty. Pella-Tomlinson dynamics in particular demonstrated stock experiencing wide fluctuations in abundance. In spite of uncertain estimates, a clear understanding of the status of the stock as overfished and in need of a biomass rebuilding program emerged as management-useful guidance to steer exploitation of this economically significant resource into sustainability.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Background: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is the result of anomalies that prevent the normal development of the fetus, it is present in about the 5% of births. Objectives: To estímate the frequency of FGR in the Clini-cal Hospital of the University of Chile. To estímate the congenital malformation prevalence rate at birth and compare it among small (SGE), adequate (AGE) and large (LGE) newborns according their gestational age. Methods: All live births and stillbirths included in the ECLAMC (Estudio Colaborativo Latino Americano de Malformaciones Congénitas) registered from January 1997 and December 2008 were considered. Newborns with congenital malformations that modified per se the size of the child, like hydrocephaly anencephaly and hydrops were excluded. Results: 10.1% of newborns were SGE. Among live births 10% were SGE instead of the 33.5% found in stillbirths (p<0.05). Congenital malformation rate at birth was 12.9% in SGE, 8.5% in AGE and 9.3% in LGE newborns (p<0.05). The global congenital malformation prevalence rate at birth was 9.5%; 9.4% in live newborns and 33% in stillbirth. Conclusión: The FGR increase the risk of late fetal mortality and congenital anomalies.http://www.scielo.cl/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0717-75262009000600008&nrm=is

Admission Control Policies in Multiservice Cellular Networks: Optimum Configuration and Sensitivity

Abstract. We evaluate different call admission control policies in various mul-tiservice cellular scenarios. For each of the studied policies we obtain the maximum calling rate that can be offered to the system to achieve a given QoS objective defined in terms of blocking probabilities. We propose an optimiza-tion methodology based on a hill climbing algorithm to find the optimum con-figuration for most policies. The results show that policies of the trunk reserva-tion class outperform policies that produce a product-form solution and the im-provement ranges approximately between 5 and 15 % in the scenarios studied.

Hiraya is a sole proprietorship business founded in February 2020 by Jan Marc Portal, an ABM student in DLSU-SHS. Its mission is to provide the community with pouch bags that feature sustainability, affordability, and durability, promoting the Philippines’ indigenous designs using locally sourced materials such as Abaca and cotton canvas. Hiraya’s vision is to create a convenient and practical experience for the general lifestyle of the people by catering local products. The owner formed a business venture with his co-students in the ABM Strand, namely: Aeriel Punzalan (operations), Jarvis Servino (financial), Katriona Ureta (marketing), Jin Ha Kim (human resource), and Jiro Mhaye Salayo (advertising). The officers possess individual skills related to their departments, such as leadership, project management, and marketing, contributing to the development of Hiraya. The business took the opportunity to sell products through the online platform, reaching millennials and Gen-Z as its target market. The business’s location was strategically placed in Laguna. The venture considers itself to be different from its competitors as it features an accented Abaca design inspired by local Kalinga tattoo artists in its products. In terms of the initial capital, the business had invested Php 31,500 to operate. The capital was able to produce 120 bags, costing Php 349 each (39.6% mark-up). Once the break-even is reached, Hiraya intends to diversify its products by putting another Php 27,488 for capital. Hiraya plans to continually expand in the future to remain true to its cause in helping indigenous people as part of its social responsibility

EMMA—mouse mutant resources for the international scientific community

    Get PDF
The laboratory mouse is the premier animal model for studying human disease and thousands of mutants have been identified or produced, most recently through gene-specific mutagenesis approaches. High throughput strategies by the International Knockout Mouse Consortium (IKMC) are producing mutants for all protein coding genes. Generating a knock-out line involves huge monetary and time costs so capture of both the data describing each mutant alongside archiving of the line for distribution to future researchers is critical. The European Mouse Mutant Archive (EMMA) is a leading international network infrastructure for archiving and worldwide provision of mouse mutant strains. It operates in collaboration with the other members of the Federation of International Mouse Resources (FIMRe), EMMA being the European component. Additionally EMMA is one of four repositories involved in the IKMC, and therefore the current figure of 1700 archived lines will rise markedly. The EMMA database gathers and curates extensive data on each line and presents it through a user-friendly website. A BioMart interface allows advanced searching including integrated querying with other resources e.g. Ensembl. Other resources are able to display EMMA data by accessing our Distributed Annotation System server. EMMA database access is publicly available at http://www.emmanet.org
