    Simulation study for investment decisions on the EcoBoost camshaft machining line

    Design/redesign of manufacturing systems is a complex, risky, and expensive task. Ford Motor Company’s Valencia Engine Plant faces this challenge as it plans to upgrade its machining and assembly lines to introduce the new EcoBoost engines. The research project described in this paper aimed to support the transition process particularly at the camshaft machining line by using simulation modelling techniques. A series of experiments was carried out using the simulation model developed, and recommendations were proposed based on the results of these experiments to support the decision as to where to invest on the line. The outcomes from the research project indicated that investment is required in terms of increasing the capacity of two bottleneck operations through retooling and improving the conveyor routing logic in one key area.     Identificación de los problemas alimentarios de la población vulnerable de Cali: análisis de las cadenas de abastecimiento y de producción

    Cali Come Mejor” es un proyecto destinado a promover políticas locales y/o regionales que contribuyan eficazmente a reducir las desigualdades, a mejorar el bienestar alimentario de las poblaciones urbanas y rurales vulnerables, estrechando los vínculos entre éstas y los agricultores. Los conceptos esenciales usados movilizan el referencial de “sistema alimentario sostenible” y “transición nutricional y alimentaria” para caracterizar y analizar las condiciones y problemas encontrados en la población pobre de Cali (reporte 1). En une secunda parte movilizaron una revición de literatura científica sobre la alimentación, una encuesta participativa con los actores públicos y privados (reporte 3). Este reporte da cuenta de los análisis complementarios usando las bases de datos identificadas. Los resultados principales caracterizan dificultades mayores que encuentra la población vulnerable en el acceso a una alimentación suficiente y saludable. Un problema mayor se encuentra en los precios muy elevados de esos productos. El carácter elevado de esos precios se explica por la estructura oligopólica del sistema de distribución de alimentos que se concentra en las cadenas de supermercados. Otro problema reside en la falta de acceso a los mercados. Los elementos mayores de información y de conocimientos de este reporte han estructurado el programa y la organización del taller de restitución a los actores en la plataforma del 10 diciembre (reporte 5). Esta jornada permitió debatir y fortalecer una modelización de los sistemas de alimentación de la población vulnerable que se centra en los desafíos principales para las políticas públicas y en los objetivos de estudios complementarios necesarios (reporte 6

    Managing hyperglycaemia during antenatal steroid administration, labour and birth in pregnant women with diabetes

    Optimal glycaemic control before and during pregnancy improves both maternal and fetal outcomes. This article summarizes the recently published guidelines on the management of glycaemic control in pregnant women with diabetes on obstetric wards and delivery units produced by the Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care and available in full at www.diabetes.org.uk/joint-british-diabetes-society and https://abcd.care/joint-british-diabetes-societies-jbds-inpatient-care-group. Hyperglycaemia following steroid administration can be managed by variable rate intravenous insulin infusion (VRIII) or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) in women who are willing and able to safely self‐manage insulin dose adjustment. All women with diabetes should have capillary blood glucose (CBG) measured hourly once they are in established labour. Those who are found to be higher than 7 mmol/l on two consecutive occasions should be started on VRIII. If general anaesthesia is used, CBG should be monitored every 30 min in the theatre. Both the VRIII and CSII rate should be reduced by at least 50% once the placenta is delivered. The insulin dose needed after delivery in insulin‐treated Type 2 and Type 1 diabetes is usually 25% less than the doses needed at the end of first trimester. Additional snacks may be needed after delivery especially if breastfeeding. Stop all anti‐diabetes medications after delivery in gestational diabetes. Continue to monitor CBG before and 1 h after meals for up to 24 h after delivery to pick up any pre‐existing diabetes or new‐onset diabetes in pregnancy. Women with Type 2 diabetes on oral treatment can continue to take metformin after birth

    “Cali Come Mejor” es un proyecto dirigido a promover políticas locales y/o regionales que contribuyan eficazmente a reducir las desigualdades, a mejorar el acceso y la disponibilidad a una alimentación saludable para la población vulnerable de Cali y fortalecer los vínculos con pequeños productores del Valle. El desarrollo del proyecto se encuentra estructurado en dos etapas fundamentales, la primera etapa (marzo-diciembre 2015) buscó analizar el sistema alimentario de Cali a través una revisión y recolección de los datos disponibles (canales de distribución, consumo de alimentos, mercados formales e informales, actores etc.); el proceso de finalización de esta primera fase consistió en la realización de una plataforma de diálogo donde participaron actores del sector público, privado y de la sociedad civil identificados a lo largo del estudio (ver anexo 1 y 2, lista de invitados y lista de participantes) . Este dialogo tuvo como objetivo compartir y socializar ideas y propuestas a favor de un sistema alimentario sostenible para Cali, tanto para la zona urbana como la rural. Su realización busco llegar a un consenso sobre los resultados del estudio y a generar algunas propuestas para optimizar el funcionamiento del sistema alimentario de Cali. Esta primera fase del proyecto, llevada a cabo desde marzo 2015, es condicional al desarrollo y toma de decisiones en la segunda etapa, a realizarse en el 2016.     Enhanced activation of the left inferior frontal gyrus in deaf and dyslexic adults during rhyming

    Hearing developmental dyslexics and profoundly deaf individuals both have difficulties processing the internal structure of words (phonological processing) and learning to read. In hearing non-impaired readers, the development of phonological representations depends on audition. In hearing dyslexics, many argue, auditory processes may be impaired. In congenitally profoundly deaf individuals, auditory speech processing is essentially absent. Two separate literatures have previously reported enhanced activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus in both deaf and dyslexic adults when contrasted with hearing non-dyslexics during reading or phonological tasks. Here, we used a rhyme judgement task to compare adults from these two special populations to a hearing non-dyslexic control group. All groups were matched on non-verbal intelligence quotient, reading age and rhyme performance. Picture stimuli were used since this requires participants to generate their own phonological representations, rather than have them partially provided via text. By testing well-matched groups of participants on the same task, we aimed to establish whether previous literatures reporting differences between individuals with and without phonological processing difficulties have identified the same regions of differential activation in these two distinct populations. The data indicate greater activation in the deaf and dyslexic groups than in the hearing non-dyslexic group across a large portion of the left inferior frontal gyrus. This includes the pars triangularis, extending superiorly into the middle frontal gyrus and posteriorly to include the pars opercularis, and the junction with the ventral precentral gyrus. Within the left inferior frontal gyrus, there was variability between the two groups with phonological processing difficulties. The superior posterior tip of the left pars opercularis, extending into the precentral gyrus, was activated to a greater extent by deaf than dyslexic participants, whereas the superior posterior portion of the pars triangularis extending into the ventral pars opercularis, was activated to a greater extent by dyslexic than deaf participants. Whether these regions play differing roles in compensating for poor phonological processing is not clear. However, we argue that our main finding of greater inferior frontal gyrus activation in both groups with phonological processing difficulties in contrast to controls suggests greater reliance on the articulatory component of speech during phonological processing when auditory processes are absent (deaf group) or impaired (dyslexic group). Thus, the brain appears to develop a similar solution to a processing problem that has different antecedents in these two populations

    Spectroscopic investigation of quantum confinement effects in ion implanted silicon-on-sapphire films

    Crystalline Silicon-on-Sapphire (SOS) films were implanted with boron (B+^+) and phosphorous (P+^+) ions. Different samples, prepared by varying the ion dose in the range 101410^{14} to 5 x 101510^{15} and ion energy in the range 150-350 keV, were investigated by the Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and glancing angle x-ray diffraction (GAXRD). The Raman results from dose dependent B+^+ implanted samples show red-shifted and asymmetrically broadened Raman line-shape for B+^+ dose greater than 101410^{14} ions cm2^{-2}. The asymmetry and red shift in the Raman line-shape is explained in terms of quantum confinement of phonons in silicon nanostructures formed as a result of ion implantation. PL spectra shows size dependent visible luminescence at \sim 1.9 eV at room temperature, which confirms the presence of silicon nanostructures. Raman studies on P+^+ implanted samples were also done as a function of ion energy. The Raman results show an amorphous top SOS surface for sample implanted with 150 keV P+^+ ions of dose 5 x 101510^{15} ions cm2^{-2}. The nanostructures are formed when the P+^+ energy is increased to 350 keV by keeping the ion dose fixed.     Exploring rationales for branding a university: Should we be seeking to measure branding in UK universities?

    Although branding is now widespread among UK universities, the application of branding principles in the higher education sector is comparatively recent and may be controversial for internal audiences who question its suitability and efficiency. This paper seeks to investigate how and whether the effectiveness of branding activity in the higher education sector should be evaluated and measured, through exploratory interviews with those who often drive it; UK University marketing professionals. Conclusions suggest that university branding is inherently complex and therefore application of commercial approaches may be over simplistic. Whilst marketing professionals discuss challenges they do not necessarily have a consistent view of the objectives of branding activity although all were able to clearly articulate branding objectives for their university, including both qualitative and, to some extent, quantitative metrics. Some measures of the real value of branding activity are therefore suggested but a key debate is perhaps whether the objectives and role of branding in higher education needs to be clarified, and a more consistent view of appropriate metrics reached?     How diverse is the diet of adult South Africans?

The objective of the current study was to measure dietary diversity in South Africans aged 16 years and older from all population groups as a proxy of food security. Methods. A cross-sectional study representative of adults from all specified ages, provinces, geographic localities, and socio-economic strata in South Africa was used (n = 3287). Trained interviewers visited participants at their homes during the survey. Dietary data was collected by means of a face validated 24 hour recall which was not quantified. A dietary diversity score (DDS) was calculated by counting each of 9 food groups. A DDS <4 was regarded as reflecting poor dietary diversity and poor food security. Results The provinces with the highest prevalence of poor dietary diversity (DDS <4) were Limpopo (61.8%) and the Eastern Cape (59.6%). By contrast, only 15.7% of participants in Western Cape had a low score. Participants in tribal areas (63.9%) and informal urban areas (55.7%) were by far the worst affected. There were significant differences in DDS by Living Standards Mean (LSM) analysis (p < 0.05) with the lowest LSM group having the lowest mean DDS (2.93).The most commonly consumed food groups were cereals/roots; meat/fish; dairy and vegetables other than vitamin A rich. Eggs, legumes, and vitamin A rich fruit and vegetables were the least consumed. Conclusion. Overall the majority of South Africans consumed a diet low in dietary variety. The tribal areas and informal urban areas were worst affected and eggs, legumes and vitamin A rich fruit and vegetables, were the least consumed.Publishers' versio
