The Crucible of Globalization: Latin America in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1973-1994

    Get PDF
Latin America has traditionally not been considered the center of global trade and economic policy, but this common perception is an inadequate view of Latin American foreign policy. Through the use of membership in intergovernmental organizations, specifically the GATT and WTO, Latin American governments were able to advance a development agenda through GATT and later the WTO. While there is a lot of literature on both of these organizations, not much of it has paid attention to the contributions of Latin American member states. Latin American governments cooperated with other developing nations and helped change the international system of trade law to aid in Latin American economic development

Navigating technoference in the family system

    Get PDF
This integrative literature review explores the increase of technology use in families, with a focus on how technology is disrupting in-person social interactions within the family system. Many studies have been conducted on how technology impacts a couple’s romantic relationship, and only a few have examined the relationship between the parent and child. This review is one of the first to examine how technology may affect the entire family unit from before children to raising adolescents. Each section of the family unit is examined, beginning with before children, followed by the early bonding and attachment associated with infant/childhood, and then the adolescent parent relationship. Research is then provided on how technology cues our ancestral adaptations making it more difficult for families to disconnect. This review finishes with clinical recommendations from the research. The recommendations are separated into two clinically relevant subcategories: 1) interventions; 2) and conversations

Analysis and optimisation of disc brake calipers

    Get PDF
Disc brake calipers are subjected to complex mechanical loading and interaction of individual components in a typical brake assembly makes design improvement very challenging. To analyse caliper behaviour, complex Finite Element models were created and successfully validated using a variety of experimental techniques, including exceptionally suitable Digital Image Correlation. A novel methodology to optimise caliper design was developed, using non-linear contact Finite Element Analysis and topology optimisation, to generate lightweight, high performance brake calipers. The method was used on a Formula 1 brake assembly and significant improvement in structural design was achieved, with the new caliper being lighter and stiffer than the original. The same approach was used on more conventional 4 pistons calipers using various boundary conditions with particular focus on mass reduction and considerably lighter designs were achieved. The influence of specific features of the optimised calipers on the structural performance was also successfully investigated

Broadband Development in Lexington: A Study of Access and Equity

    Get PDF
Broadband equity is at the forefront of today’s issues. Those that have the ability to access the internet regularly from home are given an opportunity to participate in countless social, work, and learning opportunities that those without access must forgo. It is difficult to determine where broadband infrastructure fails. Through this study of Lexington-Fayette Urban County, it was found that connection within Urban Service Boundaries is on par with national goals, while rural areas are left out. This paper contains a descriptive analysis of the overall broadband access equity of Lexington-Fayette county

Extinguishing the Firewall: Addressing the Jurisdictional Challenges to Bringing the Cyber Tort Suits against Foreign Sovereigns

    Get PDF
The rapid advancement of technology has resulted in new forms of tortious activity. Increasingly, these cyber torts are perpetrated by foreign states. Notwithstanding other barriers to collecting damages for a cyber tort, a plaintiff suing for a foreign-state-perpetrated cyber tort must prove that the alleged tortious activity satisfies one of the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act\u27s exceptions-most likely the noncommercial tort exception. Recently the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit held that a U.S. court lacked jurisdiction to hear a claim against a foreign state that hacked a U.S. national\u27s email account. The court found the noncommercial tort exception inapplicable because the intent to hack was held by a party abroad, and thus the entire tort did not occur in the United States. This Note argues that the D.C. Circuit improperly extended the entire tort doctrine from traditional physical torts to cyber torts. Instead, the noncommercial tort exception should apply to foreign-state-perpetrated cyber torts. This Note further proposes a modified location test for courts to use in determining whether a cyber tort satisfies the exception\u27s occurring in the United States requirement

A Criterion Validity Study Of Individuals\u27 Reports of Gunfire And Recorded Gunfire

The focus of this study was the validation of people\u27s reports of gunfire in two inner city neighborhoods in the Southeast. A survey design was used in which 342 people were interviewed by telephone. An ARIMA analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between people\u27s gunfire reports and 58 days of ShotSpotter recordings. The results indicated that the percentage of residents reporting the presence of gunfire was a valid predictor of night gunfire. However, residents\u27 reports of the actual number of gunshots did not appear valid. Reports of gunfire did not appear to have a statistically significant correlation with 911 gunfire calls. Residents (96.7%) indicated that gunfire had bothered their sleep. People\u27s reports of gunfire appear to be one indicator of community violence
