    Taking their eye off the ball:How shyness affects children’s attention during word learning

    The current study tests the hypothesis that shy children's reduced word learning is partly due to an effect of shyness on attention during object labeling. A sample of 20- and 26-month-old children (N = 32) took part in a looking-while-listening task in which they saw sets of familiar and novel objects while hearing familiar or novel labels. Overall, children increased attention to familiar objects when hearing their labels, and they divided their attention equally between the target and competitors when hearing novel labels. Critically, shyness reduced attention to the target object regardless of whether the heard label was novel or familiar. When children's retention of the novel word–object mappings was tested after a delay, it was found that children who showed increased attention to novel objects during labeling showed better retention. Taken together, these findings suggest that shyer children perform less well than their less shy peers on measures of word learning because their attention to the target object is dampened. Thus, this work presents evidence that shyness modulates the low-level processes of visual attention that unfold during word learning

    Previous research has shown that shyness affects children’s attention during the fast-mapping of novel words via disambiguation. The current study examined whether shyness also affects children’s attention when eye-gaze cues to novel word meanings are present. 20- to 26-month-old children’s (N = 31) gaze was recorded as they viewed videos in which an onscreen actor sat at a table on which one novel and two familiar objects appeared. The actor looked at and labeled one of the objects, using a novel word if the target object was novel. Overall, shyness was associated with a stronger preference for looking at the actor’s face, and less time looking at the object being labeled. These effects did not differ when the target object was novel or familiar, suggesting that shyness is related to attentional differences during object labeling generally, rather than specific processes involved in the disambiguation of novel words. No evidence was found of a relation between retention and shyness or attention during labeling

    The influence of gravimetric moisture content on studded shoe–surface interactions in soccer

    It is desirable for the studs of a soccer shoe to penetrate the sport surface and provide the player with sufficient traction when accelerating. Mechanical tests are often used to measure the traction of shoe–surface combinations. Mechanical testing offers a repeatable measure of shoe–surface traction, eliminating the inherent uncertainties that exist when human participant testing is employed, and are hence used to directly compare the performance of shoe–surface combinations. However, the influence specific surface characteristics has on traction is often overlooked. Examining the influence of surface characteristics on mechanical test results improves the understanding of the traction mechanisms at the shoe–surface interface. This allows footwear developers to make informed decisions on the design of studded outsoles. The aim of this paper is to understand the effect gravimetric moisture content has on the tribological mechanisms at play during stud–surface interaction. This study investigates the relationships between: the gravimetric moisture content of a natural sand-based soccer surface; surface stiffness measured via a bespoke impact test device; and surface traction measured via a bespoke mechanical test device. Regression analysis revealed that surface stiffness decreases linearly with increased gravimetric moisture content (p = 0.04). Traction was found to initially increase and then decrease with gravimetric moisture content. It was observed that: a surface of low moisture content provides low stud penetration and therefore reduced traction; a surface of high moisture content provides high stud penetration but also reduced traction due to a lubricating effect; and surfaces with moisture content in between the two extremes provide increased traction. In this study a standard commercially available stud was used and other studs may provide slightly different results. The results provide insight into the traction mechanisms at the stud–surface interface which are described in the paper. The variation between traction measurements shows the influence gravimetric moisture content will have on player performance. This highlights the requirement to understand surface conditions prior to making comparative shoe–surface traction studies and the importance of using a studded outsole that is appropriate to the surface condition during play

    Diatom-derived oxylipins induce cell death in sea urchin embryos activating caspase-8 and caspase 3/7

    Diatoms are an important class of unicellular algae that produce bioactive secondary metabolites withcytotoxic activity collectively termed oxylipins, including polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs), hydroxy-acids (HEPEs), oxo-acids and epoxyalcohols. Previous results showed that at higher concentrations, thePUA decadienal induced apoptosis on copepods and sea urchin embryos via caspase-3 activation; atlower concentrations decadienal affected the expression levels of the caspase-8 gene in embryos of thesea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. In the present work, we studied the effects of other common oxylip-ins produced by diatoms: two PUAs (heptadienal and octadienal) and four hydroxyacids (5-, 9- 11- and15-HEPE) on P. lividus cell death and caspase activities. Our results showed that (i) at higher concentra-tions PUAs and HEPEs induced apoptosis in sea urchin embryos, detected by microscopic observationand through the activation of caspase-3/7 and caspase-8 measured by luminescent assays; (ii) at lowconcentrations, PUAs and HEPEs affected the expression levels of caspase-8 and caspase-3/7 (isolated forthe first time here in P. lividus) genes, detected by Real Time qPCR. These findings have interesting impli-cations from the ecological point of view, given the importance of diatom blooms in nutrient-rich aquaticenvironments

Overall, these findings provide new evidence that shyness exerts an effect on language development by modulating the processes by which word meanings are learned
