Viabilidade, aceitação e eficácia do tratamento familiar para anorexia nervosa em adolescentes: um estudo observacional no Brasil
OBJECTIVE: There is strong evidence that family-based treatment is effective in cases of adolescent anorexia nervosa. Although family-based treatment has been studied in English-speaking countries, there is a need to examine the generalizability of this approach to non-English speaking cultures. This pilot-study aimed to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of family-based treatment in Brazil. METHOD: Observational study of adolescents with anorexia nervosa (excluding menstrual criteria), as determined with the Diagnostic and Well-Being Assessment, referred for treatment at a specialized center in São Paulo, Brazil. The following data were collected at baseline, at the end of treatment, and after six months of follow-up: weight; height; body mass index; menstrual status; Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire score; and Children Global Assessment of Functioning Scale score. RESULTS: Of 11 eligible patients/families, 9 (82%) enrolled in the study, and 7 (78%) completed the treatment. The mean patient age was 14.64 ± 1.63 years (range, 12.33-17.00 years). The Wilcoxon signed rank test showed statistically significant improvement in weight and body mass index at the end of treatment, as well as after six months of follow-up, at which point none of the patients met the diagnostic criteria for any eating disorder. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that family-based treatment is acceptable and feasible for Brazilian families. Outcomes suggest that the approach is effective in this cultural context, leading to improvements similar to those reported in previous studies conducted in other cultures.OBJETIVO: Estudos prévios demonstram fortes evidências de eficácia do Tratamento Familiar para anorexia nervosa em adolescentes.
Experimental investigation of the impact of optical injection on vital parameters of a gain-switched pulse source
An analysis of optical injection on a gain-switched distributed feedback (DFB) laser and its impact on pulse parameters that influence the performance of the pulse source in high-speed optical communication systems is presented in this paper. A range of 10 GHz in detuning and 5 dB in injected power has been experimentally identified to attain pulses, from an optically injected gain-switched DFB laser, with durations below 10 ps and pedestal suppression higher than 35 dB. These pulse features are associated with a side mode suppression ratio of about 30 dB and a timing jitter of less than 1 ps. This demonstrates the feasibility of using optical injection in conjunction with appropriate pulse compression schemes for developing an optimized and cost-efficient pulse source, based on a gain-switched DFB laser, for high-speed photonic systems

Physicochemical and bilogical characterization of soils from the vicinity of the Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station
Soil samples collected in 2006 from 4 different sites (Puchalski Hill and a moraine below this hill, an elephant seal colony and a penguin rookery) in the vicinity of Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station at King George Island were characterized in terms of physicochemical properties (pH, humidity, concentration of selected inorganic and organic substances), microbial colonization and the overall activity of selected enzymes (differentglycosidases and esterases). Activity of the latter enzymes was assayed by p-nitrophenyl and 4-methylumbelliferone derivatives of fatty acids (by spectrophotometric and fluorimetric method, respectively). The highest lipolytic activity was found in soils from the elephant seal colony and penguin rookery
Applications of O-band semiconductor optical amplifiers in fibre-optic telecommunication networks
Optical ??bre communication is an essential part of modern telecommunication networks. Research activities are aiming to transport and switch information streams through optical ??bre networks most e??ciently. This thesis is devoted to applications of 1310 nm semiconductor optical ampli??ers (SOAs) in ??bre optic telecommunication networks. The basic application of 1310 nm SOAs is the ampli??cation of optical signals. In this thesis dense wavelength division multiplexed SOA based transmission in the 1310 nm wavelength domain is investigated. The 1310 nm SOAs allow high speed (10-40 Gbit/s) transmission over metro range distances (50-200 km) without any dispersion compensation in standard single-mode ??bre based networks. This is important for access and metro systems, where the system cost is shared by the limited number of users. To alleviate optical-electrical-optical conversion at the interface point between access-metro and core networks a novel wavelength conversion technique is proposed. Nonlinear polarization rotation in the 1310 nm SOA permits the realization of 1310- to-1550 nm wavelength conversion and the aggregation of multiple data streams in the 1310 nm wavelength domain into one time interleaved data stream in the 1550 nm wavelength domain. By utilizing the 1310 nm SOA in a gain transparent con??guration an all-optical optical time domain multiplexed add-drop switch was realized. The proposed adddrop switch was widely tested in the laboratory and ??eld transmission experiments allowing 160 Gbit/s transmission over 550 km of standard single-mode ??bre and the realization of a fully functional 160 Gbit/s optical time domain multiplexed network. Based on this research it is concluded that 1310 nm SOAs are versatile components which support essential transmission and switching functionalities with great opportunities for utilization in advanced telecommunication networks
225m Outdoor W-Band Radio-over-Fiber Link Using an Optical SFP+ Module
A W-band radio-over-fiber link based on a commercial SFP+ module is demonstrated, allowing easy integration into existing PON solutions. Without active laser control good RF frequency stability and 225m wireless distance are achieved
MAKING SOCIAL CHANGES PROFITABLE
Executing social change is associated with non-profit activities conducted by nongovernmental organizations, public institutions or some companies, but only those CSR oriented. The aim of this article is to show different perspective, as well as presenting the potential of social campaigns, not only as a tool to form an image, but also as a tool to influence corporate profitability, with a particular emphasis on social campaigns conducted through social media
