    Intact capture of cosmic dust

    The focus of this development effort is to capture dust particles at hypervelocities intact and unmelted in order to preserve volatile organics. At the same time, the capture process must minimize any organic elemental or compound contamination to prevent any compromise of exobiological analyses. Inorganic silicate aerogel has been developed as a successful capture medium to satisfy both requirements of intact capture and minimal organic contamination. Up to 6 km/s, silicate projectiles from a few microns up to 100 microns have been captured intact without any melting and with minimal loss of mass. Carbon in silicate aerogel can be reduced to less than 1 part in 1000 and hydrogen 3 parts in 1000 when baked in air. Under controlled inert gas environments, additional hydrocarbon reduction can be achieved

    Intact capture of hypervelocity particles

    Knowledge of the phase, structure, and crystallography of cosmic particles, as well as their elemental and isotopic compositions, would be very valuable information toward understanding the nature of our solar system. This information can be obtained from the intact capture of large mineral grains of cosmic particles from hypervelocity impacts. Hypervelocity experiments of intact capture in underdense media have indicated realistic potential in this endeaver. The recovery of the thermal blankets and louvers from the Solar Max spacecraft have independently verified this potential in the unintended capture of cosmic materials from hypervelocity impacts. Passive underdense media will permit relatively simple and inexpensive missions to capture cosmic particles intact, either by going to a planetary body or by waiting for the particles to come to the Shuttle or the Space Station. Experiments to explore the potential of using various underdense media for an intact comet sample capture up to 6.7 km/s were performed at NASA Ames Research Center Vertical Gun Range. Explorative hypervelocity experiments up to 7.9 km/s were also made at the Ernst Mach Institute. These experiments have proven that capturing intact particles at hypervelocity impacts is definitely possible. Further research is being conducted to achieve higher capture ratios at even higher hypervelocities for even smaller projectiles

    On the Corner Elements of the CKM and PMNS Matrices

    Recent experiments show that the top-right corner element (Ue3U_{e3}) of the PMNS, like that (VubV_{ub}) of the CKM, matrix is small but nonzero, and suggest further via unitarity that it is smaller than the bottom-left corner element (Uτ1U_{\tau 1}), again as in the CKM case (Vub<VtdV_{ub} < V_{td}). An attempt in explaining these facts would seem an excellent test for any model of the mixing phenomenon. Here, it is shown that if to the assumption of a universal rank-one mass matrix, long favoured by phenomenologists, one adds that this matrix rotates with scale, then it follows that (A) by inputting the mass ratios mc/mt,ms/mb,mμ/mτm_c/m_t, m_s/m_b, m_\mu/m_\tau, and m2/m3m_2/m_3, (i) the corner elements are small but nonzero, (ii) Vub<VtdV_{ub} < V_{td}, Ue3<Uτ1U_{e 3} < U_{\tau 1}, (iii) estimates result for the ratios Vub/VtdV_{ub}/V_{td} and Ue3/Uτ1U_{e 3}/U_{\tau 1}, and (B) by inputting further the experimental values of Vus,VtbV_{us}, V_{tb} and Ue2,Uμ3U_{e2},U_{\mu 3}, (iv) estimates result for the values of the corner elements themselves.     A Comprehensive Mechanism Reproducing the Mass and Mixing Parameters of Quarks and Leptons

    It is shown that if, from the starting point of a universal rank-one mass matrix long favoured by phenomenologists, one adds the assumption that it rotates (changes its orientation in generation space) with changing scale, one can reproduce, in terms of only 6 real parameters, all the 16 mass ratios and mixing parameters of quarks and leptons. Of these 16 quantities so reproduced, 10 for which data exist for direct comparison (i.e. the CKM elements including the CP-violating phase, the angles θ12,θ13,θ23\theta_{12}, \theta_{13}, \theta_{23} in ν\nu-oscillation, and the masses mc,mμ,mem_c, m_\mu, m_e) agree well with experiment, mostly to within experimental errors; 4 others (ms,mu,md,mν2m_s, m_u, m_d, m_{\nu_2}), the experimental values for which can only be inferred, agree reasonably well; while 2 others (mν1,δCPm_{\nu_1}, \delta_{CP} for leptons), not yet measured experimentally, remain as predictions. In addition, one gets as bonuses, estimates for (i) the right-handed neutrino mass mνRm_{\nu_R} and (ii) the strong CP angle θ\theta inherent in QCD. One notes in particular that the output value for sin22θ13\sin^2 2 \theta_{13} from the fit agrees very well with recent experiments. By inputting the current experimental value with its error, one obtains further from the fit 2 new testable constraints: (i) that θ23\theta_{23} must depart from its "maximal" value: sin22θ230.935±0.021\sin^2 2 \theta_{23} \sim 0.935 \pm 0.021, (ii) that the CP-violating (Dirac) phase in the PMNS would be smaller than in the CKM matrix: of order only sinδCP0.31|\sin \delta_{CP}| \leq 0.31 if not vanishing altogether.Comment: 37 pages, 1 figur

    Mass Hierarchy, Mixing, CP-Violation and Higgs Decay---or Why Rotation is Good for Us

    The idea of a rank-one rotating mass matrix (R2M2) is reviewed detailing how it leads to ready explanations both for the fermion mass hierarchy and for the distinctive mixing patterns between up and down fermion states, which can be and have been tested against experiment and shown to be fully consistent with existing data. Further, R2M2 is seen to offer, as by-products: (i) a new solution of the strong CP problem in QCD by linking the theta-angle there to the Kobayashi-Maskawa CP-violating phase in the CKM matrix, and (ii) some novel predictions of possible anomalies in Higgs decay observable in principle at the LHC. The work described in this paper is part of the IROMEC project (Interactive Robotic Social Mediators as Companions) that recognizes the important role of play in child development and targets children who are prevented from or inhibited in playing. The project investigates the role of an interactive, autonomous robotic toy in therapy and education for children with special needs. This paper specifically addresses the therapeutic and educational objectives related to children with autism. In recent years, robots have already been used to teach basic social interaction skills to children with autism. The added value of the IROMEC robot is that play scenarios have been developed taking children's specific strengths and needs into consideration and covering a wide range of objectives in children's development areas (sensory, communicational and interaction, motor, cognitive and social and emotional). The paper describes children's developmental areas and illustrates how different experiences and interactions with the IROMEC robot are designed to target objectives in these areas.Final Published versio
