    The predictability of the extratropical stratosphere on monthly time-scales and its impact on the skill of tropospheric forecasts

Available from Wiley via the DOI in this record.Extreme variability of the winter- and spring-time stratospheric polar vortex has been shown to affect extratropical tropospheric weather. Therefore, reducing stratospheric forecast error may be one way to improve the skill of tropospheric weather forecasts. In this review, the basis for this idea is examined. A range of studies of different stratospheric extreme vortex events shows that they can be skilfully forecasted beyond 5 days and into the sub-seasonal range (0–30 days) in some cases. Separate studies show that typical errors in forecasting a stratospheric extreme vortex event can alter tropospheric forecast skill by 5–7% in the extratropics on sub-seasonal time-scales. Thus understanding what limits stratospheric predictability is of significant interest to operational forecasting centres.     Efficacy of Major Plant Extracts/Molecules on Field Insect Pests

    Insect pests are considered the major hurdle in enhancing the production and productivity of any farming system. The use of conventional synthetic pesticides has led to the emergence of pesticide-resistant insects, environmental pollution, and negative effects on natural enemies, which have caused an ecological imbalance of the predator-prey ratio and human health hazards; therefore, eco-friendly alternative strategies are required. The plant kingdom, a rich repertoire of secondary metabolites, can be tapped as an alternative for insect pest management strategies. A number of plants have been documented to have insecticidal properties against various orders of insects in vitro by acting as antifeedants, repellents, sterilant and oviposition deterrents, etc. However, only a few plant compounds are applicable at the field level or presently commercialised.     Global, regional, and national incidence of six major immune-mediated inflammatory diseases: findings from the global burden of disease study 2019

    Background The causes for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are diverse and the incidence trends of IMIDs from specific causes are rarely studied. The study aims to investigate the pattern and trend of IMIDs from 1990 to 2019. Methods We collected detailed information on six major causes of IMIDs, including asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis, between 1990 and 2019, derived from the Global Burden of Disease study in 2019. The average annual percent change (AAPC) in number of incidents and age standardized incidence rate (ASR) on IMIDs, by sex, age, region, and causes, were calculated to quantify the temporal trends. Findings In 2019, rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease accounted 1.59%, 36.17%, 54.71%, 0.09%, 6.84%, 0.60% of overall new IMIDs cases, respectively. The ASR of IMIDs showed substantial regional and global variation with the highest in High SDI region, High-income North America, and United States of America. Throughout human lifespan, the age distribution of incident cases from six IMIDs was quite different. Globally, incident cases of IMIDs increased with an AAPC of 0.68 and the ASR decreased with an AAPC of −0.34 from 1990 to 2019. The incident cases increased across six IMIDs, the ASR of rheumatoid arthritis increased (0.21, 95% CI 0.18, 0.25), while the ASR of asthma (AAPC = −0.41), inflammatory bowel disease (AAPC = −0.72), multiple sclerosis (AAPC = −0.26), psoriasis (AAPC = −0.77), and atopic dermatitis (AAPC = −0.15) decreased. The ASR of overall and six individual IMID increased with SDI at regional and global level. Countries with higher ASR in 1990 experienced a more rapid decrease in ASR. Interpretation The incidence patterns of IMIDs varied considerably across the world. Innovative prevention and integrative management strategy are urgently needed to mitigate the increasing ASR of rheumatoid arthritis and upsurging new cases of other five IMIDs, respectively.     Global burden of cardiovascular diseases and risk factors, 1990–2019: update from the GBD 2019 study

    Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), principally ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke, are the leading cause of global mortality and a major contributor to disability. This paper reviews the magnitude of total CVD burden, including 13 underlying causes of cardiovascular death and 9 related risk factors, using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019. GBD, an ongoing multinational collaboration to provide comparable and consistent estimates of population health over time, used all available population-level data sources on incidence, prevalence, case fatality, mortality, and health risks to produce estimates for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. Prevalent cases of total CVD nearly doubled from 271 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 257 to 285 million) in 1990 to 523 million (95% UI: 497 to 550 million) in 2019, and the number of CVD deaths steadily increased from 12.1 million (95% UI:11.4 to 12.6 million) in 1990, reaching 18.6 million (95% UI: 17.1 to 19.7 million) in 2019. The global trends for disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and years of life lost also increased significantly, and years lived with disability doubled from 17.7 million (95% UI: 12.9 to 22.5 million) to 34.4 million (95% UI:24.9 to 43.6 million) over that period. The total number of DALYs due to IHD has risen steadily since 1990, reaching 182 million (95% UI: 170 to 194 million) DALYs, 9.14 million (95% UI: 8.40 to 9.74 million) deaths in the year 2019, and 197 million (95% UI: 178 to 220 million) prevalent cases of IHD in 2019. The total number of DALYs due to stroke has risen steadily since 1990, reaching 143 million (95% UI: 133 to 153 million) DALYs, 6.55 million (95% UI: 6.00 to 7.02 million) deaths in the year 2019, and 101 million (95% UI: 93.2 to 111 million) prevalent cases of stroke in 2019. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of disease burden in the world. CVD burden continues its decades-long rise for almost all countries outside high-income countries, and alarmingly, the age-standardized rate of CVD has begun to rise in some locations where it was previously declining in high-income countries. There is an urgent need to focus on implementing existing cost-effective policies and interventions if the world is to meet the targets for Sustainable Development Goal 3 and achieve a 30% reduction in premature mortality due to noncommunicable diseases

    45-50Meitei, the valley inhabitant of Manipur have the tradition of eating raw leaves, young inflorescences, tender stalks and other plants’ parts with their indigenous sauce Ametpa or with indigenous dish Eromba or as an ingredient of indigenous salad Singju with the main course of food. The present work was based on the methodical field survey conducted during the year 2007 and 2009. Local people of 30-70 yrs age group of both genders were interviewed (using standard questionnaires) on the different types of plants’ parts they have been eating raw for generations and medicinal values they obtained from this mode of eating. The interviewees are represented from wide array of the disciplines of the localities (vendors, collectors, users, scientific societies, etc.) to gather the maximum information related to plants and benefits derived. Altogether 64 plants belonging to 46 genera and 25 families (ranging from Gymnosperm to Angiosperm) are discuss briefly with particular emphasis on their scientific name, local name, family, parts used and medicinal benefit they claimed to obtain from these plants in this mode of eating

    The thyroid is an important part of human endocrine system which are responsible for regulation of oxygen use, BMR, cellular metabolism and growth and development. Hypofunctioning of Jatharagni which in turn effect Dhatwagni eventually brings out Pathological sequence and ultimately the disease condition develop. In hypothyroidsim etiological factors mainly vitiate Tridosha (Kapha predominance along with Pitta vitiation and Margavarana leading to provoking of Vata). The line of treatment with specific target to Rasavaha, Mamsavaha, Medovaha, Manovaha Srotas as well as Vata-Kapha Nashaka, Agnideepan, Sroto Shodhana, Vatanuloman, Amapachan treatment should be administered in hypothyroidism. Keeping the same in mind, present study was carried out to assess the role of Kanchanara Twaka Kwatha with Shunthi Churna in hypothyroidism (Dhatuwagni Vikriti). For this study 40 patients were selected and are divided into two groups with 20 patients in each group on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria and were assessed on the basis of subjective and objective parameters by applying appropriate statistical test. Most of the patients in group 1 (Kanchanaradi Kwatha) shows marked improvement in their symptoms as well as in objective parameters (thyroid profile) as compared to group 2 (Tab. Levothyroxine 50 mcg) which was taken as control group. From this study it can be concluded that hypothyroidism can be managed effectively with Kanchanara Twaka Kwatha with Shunthi Churna mention in Sharangdhar Samhita Madhyam Khanda Adhyaya 2 Shloka no.126
