    Autocalibration with the Minimum Number of Cameras with Known Pixel Shape

    In 3D reconstruction, the recovery of the calibration parameters of the cameras is paramount since it provides metric information about the observed scene, e.g., measures of angles and ratios of distances. Autocalibration enables the estimation of the camera parameters without using a calibration device, but by enforcing simple constraints on the camera parameters. In the absence of information about the internal camera parameters such as the focal length and the principal point, the knowledge of the camera pixel shape is usually the only available constraint. Given a projective reconstruction of a rigid scene, we address the problem of the autocalibration of a minimal set of cameras with known pixel shape and otherwise arbitrarily varying intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. We propose an algorithm that only requires 5 cameras (the theoretical minimum), thus halving the number of cameras required by previous algorithms based on the same constraint. To this purpose, we introduce as our basic geometric tool the six-line conic variety (SLCV), consisting in the set of planes intersecting six given lines of 3D space in points of a conic. We show that the set of solutions of the Euclidean upgrading problem for three cameras with known pixel shape can be parameterized in a computationally efficient way. This parameterization is then used to solve autocalibration from five or more cameras, reducing the three-dimensional search space to a two-dimensional one.     Shonan Rotation Averaging: Global Optimality by Surfing SO(p)nSO(p)^n

    Shonan Rotation Averaging is a fast, simple, and elegant rotation averaging algorithm that is guaranteed to recover globally optimal solutions under mild assumptions on the measurement noise. Our method employs semidefinite relaxation in order to recover provably globally optimal solutions of the rotation averaging problem. In contrast to prior work, we show how to solve large-scale instances of these relaxations using manifold minimization on (only slightly) higher-dimensional rotation manifolds, re-using existing high-performance (but local) structure-from-motion pipelines. Our method thus preserves the speed and scalability of current SFM methods, while recovering globally optimal solutions.Comment: 30 pages (paper + supplementary material). The photomosaic was generated from digital photographs acquired using the ARGO II seafloor imaging system during the 1996 LUSTRE cruise, which surveyed a ∌1 km2 zone and provided a coverage of ∌20% of the seafloor. The photomosaic has a pixel resolution of 15 mm and encloses the areas with known active hydrothermal venting. The final mosaic is generated after an optimization that includes the automatic detection of the same benthic features across different images (feature-matching), followed by a global alignment of images based on the vehicle navigation. We also provide software to construct mosaics from large sets of images for which georeferencing information exists (location, attitude, and altitude per image), to visualize them, and to extract data. Georeferencing information can be provided by the raw navigation data (collected during the survey) or result from the optimization obtained from image matching. Mosaics based solely on navigation can be readily generated by any user but the optimization and global alignment of the mosaic requires a case-by-case approach for which no universally software is available. The Lucky Strike photomosaics (optimized and navigated-only) are publicly available through the Marine Geoscience Data System (MGDS, http://www.marine-geo.org).     Euclidean Structure from N>=2 Parallel Circles: Theory and Algorithms

    International audienceOur problem is that of recovering, in one view, the 2D Euclidean structure, induced by the projections of N parallel circles. This structure is a prerequisite for camera calibration and pose computation. Until now, no general method has been described for N > 2. The main contribution of this work is to state the problem in terms of a system of linear equations to solve.We give a closed-form solution as well as bundle adjustment-like refinements, increasing the technical applicability and numerical stability. Our theoretical approach generalizes and extends all those described in existing works for N = 2 in several respects, as we can treat simultaneously pairs of orthogonal lines and pairs of circles within a unified framework. The proposed algorithm may be easily implemented, using well-known numerical algorithms. Its performance is illustrated by simulations and experiments with real images

    Relative Tolerance of Nine Olve Cultivars to Pseudomonas savastanoi Causing Bacterial Knot Disease

    Reactions of nine olive cultivars inoculated with olive or oleander strains of Pseudomonas savastanoi were evaluated under glasshouse conditions. Two quantitative indices of pathogenicity were used: 1. gall size from standardised inoculations, measured after 2 months; 2. rate of change of gall size with increasing inoculum concentration. These two indices were combined in a single plot that appears to give the best resolution of all data. Responses of olive cultivars to olive strains of P. savastanoi suggest that cultivars Carolea, Koroneiki, Leccino and Pendolino are the most tolerant, and that Barnea, Manzanillo, Picholine, Picual and a South Australian selection of Verdale are the least tolerant. Olive and oleander strains of P. savastanoi differed in virulence, and between-plant variability in reaction to inoculation was noted. Hypersensitive reactions do not appear to be part of mechanisms of tolerance. Olive strains of P. savastanoi affected all cultivars more severely than did equivalent inoculations with oleander strains

    High speed e-beam writing for large area photonic nanostructures-a choice of parameters

    Photonic nanostructures are used for many optical systems and applications. However, some high-end applications require the use of electron-beam lithography (EBL) to generate such nanostructures. An important technological bottleneck is the exposure time of the EBL systems, which can exceed 24 hours per 1 cm2. Here, we have developed a method based on a target function to systematically increase the writing speed of EBL. As an example, we use as the target function the fidelity of the Fourier Transform spectra of nanostructures that are designed for thin film light trapping applications, and optimize the full parameter space of the lithography process. Finally, we are able to reduce the exposure time by a factor of 5.5 without loss of photonic performance. We show that the performances of the fastest written structures are identical to the original ones within experimental error. As the target function can be varied according to different purposes, the method is also applicable to guided mode resonant grating and many other areas. These findings contribute to the advancement of EBL and point towards making the technology more attractive for commercial applications

    Parenting Intervention and the Prevention of Serious Mental Health Problems in Children

    The reduction of coercive or inadequate parenting is essential if the mental health status of Australian children and adolescents is to be improved. Of the available approaches that address parenting practices, behavioural family interventions have the strongest empirical support and are effective in reducing parenting practices that contribute to the development of behavioural and emotional problems in children. However, only a small proportion of parents access such interventions. A comprehensive multilevel, evidence-based parenting and family support strategy needs to be implemented on a wide scale to reduce the prevalence of mental health problems in children and youth. The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program is an example of a population-level strategy that can be used to improve the mental health status of children and their parents

    Age-Related Attenuation of Dominant Hand Superiority

    The decline of motor performance of the human hand-arm system with age is well-documented. While dominant hand performance is superior to that of the non-dominant hand in young individuals, little is known of possible age-related changes in hand dominance. We investigated age-related alterations of hand dominance in 20 to 90 year old subjects. All subjects were unambiguously right-handed according to the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory. In Experiment 1, motor performance for aiming, postural tremor, precision of arm-hand movement, speed of arm-hand movement, and wrist-finger speed tasks were tested. In Experiment 2, accelerometer-sensors were used to obtain objective records of hand use in everyday activities
