    The electrification of raindrops

    The charges and masses of individual raindrops were measured in different conditions of rainfall at two different sites. An apparatus was developed to measure raindrop parameters and display their values in the form of a spot whose vertical and horizontal positions on an oscilloscope screen represent the mass and charge respectively. Photographic records, each of a number of successive spots, were made for periods of between half-a-minute and twenty-five minutes during twenty-four separate periods of rainfall which covered many meteorological conditions between thunderstorms and fine drizzle. The photographic results are analysed in terms of the weather conditions applying at the times of measurement. It is shown that stratus and cumulus clouds produce distinct charge/mass patterns on the exposures, and that these patterns can be related to known factors about the nature of the different clouds. The methods of charge measurement by electrostatic induction, and of mass measurement by registering the impacts of drops- on to a detector plate are described. Suggestions are made for future work and improvements to the equipment

    Comparative analysis of wild and long term captive bred Partula snails using morphometrics and population data

    Partula snails are one genus of the Partulidae family of air breathing, land snails that are endemic to the Pacific Islands. Over 100 partulid species are recognised with over half these species known to have existed and endemic to the Society Islands (within the Pacific islands). It is thought that 56 of these endemic Partula species are now extinct on the Society Islands with the remaining species critically endangered. This devastating extinction is mainly the result of the introduced carnivorous rosy wolf snail, Euglandina rosea in 1974. The most imposing threat today is the introduced New Guinea flatworm, Platydemus manokwari. To save the remaining Partula species from extinction, specimens have been collected since 1962 to start a captive breeding programme coordinated by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). Over 15 species are kept in captivity currently. Several reintroductions have taken place with over 10,000 snails being reintroduced to the islands with varying levels of success. Partula have been in captivity now for over 60 years, with many of the species founded with small numbers. There is concern about how this species may be adapting morphologically to their captive environment as they are known to be sensitive to environmental changes. This study focused on ten species of Partula with multiple generations in captivity, which made it possible to compare the morphology of wild to captive-bred specimens. The study found that seven of the ten species displayed no significant morphological changes during long-term captivity (P. clara, P. garrettii, P. hebe bella, P. otaheitana, P. rosea, P. suturalis strigosa and P. varia). Three species did show significant morphological changes at various stages throughout captivity. The morphological changes that P. faba displayed were likely adaptations to its captive environment. Partula faba did not survive in captivity as a result of the low genetic diversity within the captive population due to the depleted wild population. Partula affinis appears to have gradually changed morphologically to presumably adapt to the captive environment. Partula tohievana displayed morphological changes between two generations only, suggesting a local mutation event caused by low genetic diversity. This species should be monitored in captivity as it may suffer a similar fate to P. faba and face extinction in captivity. Overall, long-term captivity does not appear to have negatively affected the morphology of Partula and therefore suggests positive outcomes for future reintroductions

    No change in neurodevelopment at 11 years after extremely preterm birth

    Objective: To determine whether improvements in school age outcomes had occurred between two cohorts of births at 22–25 weeks of gestation to women residents in England in 1995 and 2006. Design: Longitudinal national cohort studies. Setting: School-based or home-based assessments at 11 years of age. Participants: EPICure2 cohort of births at 22–26 weeks of gestation in England during 2006: a sample of 200 of 1031 survivors were evaluated; outcomes for 112 children born at 22–25 weeks of gestation were compared with those of 176 born in England during 1995 from the EPICure cohort. Classroom controls for each group acted as a reference population. Main outcome measures: Standardised measures of cognition and academic attainment were combined with parent report of other impairments to estimate overall neurodevelopmental status. Results: At 11 years in EPICure2, 18% had severe and 20% moderate impairments. Comparing births at 22–25 weeks in EPICure2 (n=112), 26% had severe and 21% moderate impairment compared with 18% and 32%, respectively, in EPICure. After adjustment, the OR of moderate or severe neurodevelopmental impairment in 2006 compared with 1995 was 0.76 (95% CI 0.45 to 1.31, p=0.32). IQ scores were similar in 1995 (mean 82.7, SD 18.4) and 2006 (81.4, SD 19.2), adjusted difference in mean z-scores 0.2 SD (95% CI −0.2 to 0.6), as were attainment test scores. The use of multiple imputation did not alter these findings. Conclusion: Improvements in care and survival between 1995 and 2006 are not paralleled by improved cognitive or educational outcomes or a reduced rate of neurodevelopmental impairment

    High-Affinity Small Molecule Inhibitors of T Cell Costimulation: Compounds for Immunotherapy

    SummaryCostimulatory molecules are important regulators of T cell activation and thus favored targets for therapeutic manipulation of immune responses. One of the key costimulatory receptors is CD80, which binds the T cell ligands, CD28, and CTLA-4. We describe a set of small compounds that bind with high specificity and low nanomolar affinity to CD80. The compounds have relatively slow off-rates and block both CD28 and CTLA-4 binding, implying that they occlude the shared ligand binding site. The compounds inhibit proinflammatory cytokine release in T cell assays with submicromolar potency, and as such, they represent promising leads for the development of novel therapeutics for immune-mediated inflammatory disease. Our results also suggest that other predominantly β proteins, such as those that dominate the cell surface, may also be accessible as potentially therapeutic targets

    The Role of Compensatory Beliefs in Rationalizing Environmentally Detrimental Behaviors

    Compensatory green beliefs (CGBs) reflect the idea that a pro-environmental behavior (e.g., recycling) can off-set the negative effects of an environmentally detrimental behavior (e.g., driving). It is thought that CGBs might help explain why people act in ways that appear to contradict their pro-environmental intentions, and inconsistently engage in pro-environmental behaviors. The present study sought to investigate the nature and use of CGBs. A series of interviews suggested that participants endorsed CGBs to: (a) reduce feelings of guilt with respect to (the assumed or actual) negative environmental impact of their actions, and (b) to defend their green credentials in social situations. Participants also justified detrimental behaviors on the basis of higher loyalties (e.g., family’s needs), or the perceived difficulty of performing more pro-environmental actions. In addition to shedding light on how, when, and why people might hold and use CGBs, the research also provides new insight into how CGBs should be assessed

    Bilateral giant femoropopliteal artery aneurysms: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Popliteal artery aneurysms are the most common peripheral arterial aneurysms, and are frequently bilateral. Acute limb ischemia, rupture and compression phenomena can complicate these aneurysms when the diameter exceeds 2 cm.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>We report an 82-year-old male patient with two giant femoropopliteal aneurysms, 10.5 and 8.5 cm diameters, managed in our institution. Both aneurysms were resected and a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) femoropopliteal interposition graft was placed successfully. Management and literature review are discussed.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We believe this is the first report in the medical literature of bilateral giant femoropopliteal aneurysms.</p

    The manufacturer's value chain as a service - the case of remanufacturing

    Manufacturing enterprises globally have already largely adopted the product-service strategy into their operations. However, due to gradual commoditization of services, manufacturing enterprises will have to further extend this strategy. One possibility is for manufacturers to servitize, not only their final products, but also a part of their value chain, with the aim of increasing their long-term competitive advantage. In this article, the application of servitization to remanufacturing, as a set of operational and business competences and processes, is conceptualized. By offering remanufacturing as a service, manufacturers will create an additional revenue stream. The synergies created from integrating remanufacturing into an enterprise with a product-service system are scrutinized. The impact of offering remanufacturing as a service (servitizing) is then assessed from the perspective of the competitive advantage of both, the provider and the consumer of the service. Three main sets of implications are identified. The first is that the integration of remanufacturing into a product-service system could increase customer satisfaction through a larger service scope and higher service quality, while decreasing operational costs. Furthermore, it is shown that the higher the level of servitization, the stronger is the positive impact of remanufacturing. The second set of results shows that servitizing remanufacturing can substantially increase the competitive advantage of both the provider and the consumer. While the first two sets of results have industrially oriented implications, the third set constitutes a theoretical contribution through the proposal and conceptual validation of extension of the application of servitization theory. Finally, while the reasoning is of a conceptual nature, it is based on established theories and includes remanufacturing-related industrial cases as a basis for assessment
