Conjugate free convection along a thin vertical plate with internal nonuniform heat generation in a porous medium
The steady state heat transfer characteristics of a thin vertical strip with internal heat generation placed in a porous medium is studied in this work. The non-dimensional
temperature distribution in the strip is obtained as a function of the intensity and distribution of the internal heat sources. Both the thermally thin as the thick wall approximations are considered in this paper. The mass flow rate of fluid induced by heating the strip decreases as the longitudinal heat conduction effects along the strip decreases
This paper presents the principle results of a current research project focusing on the sociodemographic determinants of divorce in Spain on the basis of the 1991 Sociodemographic Survey. It attempts to explain the propensity for the breakdown of first unions, which is shaped as a dependent variable, on the basis of a set of covariables which refer to the characteristics of the source family, individual characteristics and union characteristics. The authors then measure the effect of these co-variables on the probability of first-union disruption with a view to proposing a first socio-demographic picture of separation and divorce in Spain. A logistic regression discrete-time hazard model was used for the analysis

Adaptation in nature is a relevant research area that has
many applications in artificial systems, which can be used for
the benefit of society. Particularly in biology, a neuron can
reconfigure itself to develop different tasks using the same
structure; however, this procedure is a mystery. The processes
of adaptation, learning, and coupling between them have
been research pursuits therein, and the understanding of this
processes can help to build artificial devices. The act of joining
living tissue with electronics has long been imagined in the
world of science fiction, but cybernetic organisms are now
one step closer to reality, thanks to work emerging from
researchers that have built tiny electronic meshes out of silicon nanowires and have used them as scaffolds to grow nerve,
heart, and muscle tissu
The results obtained from a second survey for Myxomycetes in the arid areas of Peru are reported. A total of 37 localities from the cactus belt (‘cardonal’), between 1500 and 3000 m a.s.l., were sampled over six years. This survey is based on 601 identifiable collections of myxomycetes, developed in the field under natural conditions or those that were recovered from moist chamber cultures. In total, 84 taxa representing 19 genera were recorded. One new species, Cribraria spinispora Lado & D.Wrigley sp. nov., is described, three species new to South America and 22 additional new species for Peru are reported as well. Endemic plants, expecially cacti, had a particular relevance as myxomycete substrates. The predominance of the order Physarales T.Macbr. in arid areas is reinforced. Comments are included on some collections, as well as SEM micrographs of several species. A statistical evaluation of the diversity of myxomycetes in the cardonal area and a comparison of this area with the dry coastal desert of Peru and other Neotropical xeric environments are also included. Results show that the arid areas are rich in myxomycetes, and that each area has a unique assemblage. The differences appear to be related to the host plants.
Multivariate Radiological-Based Models for the Prediction of Future Knee Pain: Data from the OAI
In this work, the potential of X-ray based multivariate prognostic models to predict the onset of chronic knee pain is presented. Using X-rays quantitative image assessments of joint-space-width (JSW) and paired semiquantitative central X-ray scores from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI), a case-control study is presented. The pain assessments of the right knee at the baseline and the 60-month visits were used to screen for case/control subjects. Scores were analyzed at the time of pain incidence (T-0), the year prior incidence (T-1), and two years before pain incidence (T-2). Multivariate models were created by a cross validated elastic-net regularized generalized linear models feature selection tool. Univariate differences between cases and controls were reported by AUC, C-statistics, and ODDs ratios. Univariate analysis indicated that the medial osteophytes were significantly more prevalent in cases than controls: C-stat 0.62, 0.62, and 0.61, at T-0, T-1, and T-2, respectively. The multivariate JSW models significantly predicted pain: AUC = 0.695, 0.623, and 0.620, at T-0, T-1, and T-2, respectively. Semiquantitative multivariate models predicted paint with C-stat = 0.671, 0.648, and 0.645 at T-0, T-1, and T-2, respectively. Multivariate models derived from plain X-ray radiography assessments may be used to predict subjects that are at risk of developing knee pain
Prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss in children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus
To establish the prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), as well as the predisposing risk factors, in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) attending the Service of Endocrino-Pediatrics and Otolaryngology Department of the ‘‘Dr. José Eleuterio González’’ University Hospital and the Materno-Infantil Hospital, from January 2011 to December 2012. Material and methods: A total of 84 children with T1DM, with ages between 6 and 18 years old, were studied. Values of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were assessed and Tonal audiometry and Speech audiometry tests were performed.
Results: A total of 84 patients with a diagnosis of T1DM were studied, out of which 12 (14.3%) presented SNHL. Fifty percent of patients with hearing loss were in the age range of 10---13 years old. Regarding time of evolution with the disease (T1DM), 33% of patients with more than 5 years with T1DM presented SNHL, and nearly 88.9% of the patients with less than 5 years with T1DM presented normal hearing (p = 0.011). Moreover, 65.47% of the patients presented complications due to poor glycemic control at some point in the evolution of their disease. All (100%) diabetic patients with SNHL and 91% of the patients without SNHL had HbA1c values greater than 6%. In patients with hearing impairments, 83.3% suffered mild and 16.4% suffered moderate hearing loss. Most presented bilateral hearing loss, with the right ear dominating.
Acute frequencies, mainly 8000 kHz, were the most affected
Our aim in this paper is to analyze the socio-demographic characteristics of Spanish women married to foreign-born men, focusing on those early and late nuptiality calendars where the presence of these marriages is greater. Data comes from marriage registers of Spanish Vital Statistics (MNP) between 2008 and 2010, and complementarily we use microdata from the Labor Force Survey (EPA) between 1999 and 2011. Results show that the advantage position of Spanish women on transnational marriage markets becomes in an adjustment of different mechanisms related with gender dynamics in the union formation behaviors during non-typical ages at marriage: in intermarriage couples, early age at unions are characterized by a reinforcement of traditional gender roles; meanwhile late age at unions and second-marriages show a reverse in the traditional model of female hypergamy.S'analitzen les caracterÃstiques sociodemogrà fiques de les espanyoles casades amb estrangers, amb un enfocament més acurat en aquelles que presenten un calendari de nupcialitat més avançat i més tardà , on el seu protagonisme és més gran.
