Physical activity is an excellent way of promoting and developing young people’s social and personal values in a current setting characterised by promoting physical activity due to its multiple benefits. The objective of this study is to identify the values associated with satisfaction with physical activity in the adolescent population. The sample consisted of 401 young people from various regions in Spain. Schwartz’s PVQ scale was applied to the participants through a self-administered online questionnaire. The data were analysed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and a multiple regression model. The results indicate that the values of hedonism, achievement and benevolence give them greatest satisfaction. Values such as tradition and self-direction and stimulation have an average relevance to the relationship and satisfaction with physical activity because they are more associated with a lively lifestyle. As a result, the dimension of openness to change becomes more important. This is important information in sports psychology, where the values associated with physical activity have hardly been analysed.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess body shape trajectories in childhood and midlife in relation to subsequent risk of breast cancer (BC) in a Mediterranean cohort. Design: The “Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra” (SUN) Project is a dynamic prospective cohort study of university graduates initiated in 1999. With a group-based modelling approach, we assessed body shape trajectories from age 5 to 40 years. Multivariable Cox regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) for BC after the age of 40 years according to the body shape trajectory. Setting: City of Pamplona, in the North of Spain. Participants: 6498 women with a mean age of 40 years (sd 9). Results: We identified four distinct body shape trajectories ("childhood lean-midlife increase" (19·9 %), "childhood medium-midlife stable” (53 %), "childhood heavy-midlife stable" (21 %) and "childhood heavy-midlife increase" (6·1 %)). Among 54 978 women-years of follow-up, we confirmed eighty-two incident cases of BC. Women in the "childhood lean-midlife increase" group showed a higher risk of BC (HR = 1·84, 95 % CI 1·11, 3·04) compared with women in the "childhood medium-midlife stable" category. This association was stronger for postmenopausal BC (HR = 2·42, 95 % CI 1·07, 5·48). Conclusions: Our results suggest a role for lifetime adiposity in breast carcinogenesis.Financial support: The SUN Project has received funding from the Spanish Government-Instituto de Salud Carlos III, and the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) (RD 06/0045, CIBER-OBN, grants PI10/02658, PI10/02293, PI13/00615, PI14/01668, PI14/01798, PI14/01764, PI17/01795 and G03/140), the Navarra Regional Government (45/2011, 122/2014 and 41/2016) and the University of Navarra

Increasing trend in the prevalence of morbid obesity in Spain: from 1.8 to 6.1 per thousand in 14 years

Obesity, and especiallymorbid obesity, increases the risk of cardiovascular as well as non-cardiovascular diseases. Our objective was to ascertain the trends in morbid obesity in Spain from 1993 to 2006 using representative data from 106,048 participants in the National Health Surveys. An age-adjusted Poisson regression model stratified by sex was fitted using morbid obesity as the dependent variable. An increasing trend in prevalent morbid obesity from 1.8 to 6.1 per thousand participants was found (increase > 200%). Morbid obesity prevalence was higher in women. After adjusting for age, a monotonically increasing prevalence of morbid obesity was apparent for both men and women: the relative increase was 4% per year in women and 12% per year in men. These trends highlight the importance of preventive actions

The aim of the present study was to analyse the existence of postnatal depression (anxiety and depression) in a sample of women from the Valencian Community (East of Spain) as well as its evolution two months after delivery. A sample of 101 women resident in the City of Valencia and surrounding villages, that gave birth in the Maternal Ward of the University Hospital “La Fe” of Valencia, were surveyed. Depression was assessed by means of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS; Cox, Holden y Sagovsky, 1987),the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI; Spielberger, Gorsuch y Lushene, 1970) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; Beck, Rush, Shaw y Emery, 1979). The main results point out that a high percentage of women overcome the cut-off points established for diagnosis of depression according to EPDS in both moments of the study (32% and 26% respectively). Depression level was related with bad pregnancy and difficulties of coping with the new experience (p ≤ 0,05). An important prevalence of postnatal depression was observed. The ways they live pregnancy and cope with changes have proved to be related to depression in these women.

Effects and Safe Inclusion of Narbonne Vetch (Vicia narbonensis) in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Diets: Towards a More Sustainable Aquaculture

    Get PDF
Aquaculture’s sustainability deeply relies on the identification and inclusion of alternative raw materials. Although meals from insects and/or byproducts from different industries are being recently tested, the meal from terrestrial vegetable species is still the main substitution candidate for fish meal. Here the effects of 0% (Control), 10% (A10) and 30% (A30) inclusion of Narbonne vetch (Vicia narbonensis; ZV-156 strain) meal in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) diets was assessed in a 63-day feeding trial by means of growth performance, histopathological, nutritional value of the fish fillet and blood biochemistry analyses. A dose-response trial was conducted in triplicate with 25 rainbow trout juveniles (20 g average body weight) per 500 L tank. Narbonne vetch meal decreased total intestine protease activity in vitro (from 26.81% to 48% inhibition), although high temperature partially inhibited the action of antinutritional factors (ANFs). No differences in fish growth performance and no severe histopathological alterations on the proximal intestine were observed between 10% Narbonne vetch inclusion and Control groups. In contrast, high inclusion (30%) of Narbonne vetch led to poor growth performance (30% reduction on final growth) and severe histopathological alterations (e.g., loss of brush border integrity, high number of villi fusion, reduced goblet cells density as well as reduced width of submucosa, muscular and serosa layers). Furthermore, while the A30 diet decreased docosahexaenoic fatty acid (FA) content in fish fillets, the A10 diet improved monounsaturated FA content when compared to that of the Control group. No altered levels of cholesterol, glucose or triglycerides in blood plasma and/or histopathological effects on the liver were observed among fish fed the different experimental diets. Although further research efforts (e.g., identifying potential enzymatic treatments to decrease the action of ANFs from Narbonne vetch meal) might be required, present results show that a low inclusion (10%) of Narbonne vetch in rainbow trout diets is possible. The inclusion of locally produced legumes such a Narbonne vetch might be an interesting approach to reduce carbon footprint in European aquaculture and the dependency on other alternative raw materials such as soybean (Glycine max) imported from third countries

Bird assemblages from western Sierras Grandes and Traslasierra valley in central Argentina: An important area for conservation of Chacoan and mountain birds

    Get PDF
Between 1970 and 1980, many ornithological prospections were made in Central Argentina. With this work we intend to fill some of the existing gaps regarding such knowledge. We conducted bird surveys in the Central-western region of Córdoba province. We identified 240 bird species (63% of province`s avifauna) belonging to 48 families: 10 of which are considered under some threat category, 37 are migrants, and two are endemic to the region. Throughout a qualitative analysis of ordination, we identified three clusters of environments that share similar bird composition. Among those, the most dissimilar group was composed of aquatic environments, whereas the two other groups included wooded and anthropized environments and high altitude environments, respectively. The high bird richness recorded in a relatively small region, encompassing a variety of environments, bestows upon this area a high bird conservation value. The inclusion of this area in the system of "Important bird Areas" (IBAs) may prompt protection actions.Fil: Vergara Tabares, David Lautaro. Human pregnane X receptor is expressed in breast carcinomas, potential heterodimers formation between hPXR and RXR-alpha.

    Get PDF
The human pregnane X receptor (hPXR) is an orphan nuclear receptor that induces transcription of response elements present in steroid-inducible cytochrome P 450 gene promoters. This activation requires the participation of retinoid X receptors (RXRs), needed partners of hPXR to form heterodimers. We have investigated the expression of hPXR and RXRs in normal, premalignant, and malignant breast tissues, in order to det. whether their expression profile in localized infiltrative breast cancer is assocd. with an increased risk of recurrent disease. Methods: Breast samples from 99 patients including benign breast diseases, in situ and infiltrative carcinomas were processed for immunohistochem. and Western-blot anal. Results: Cancer cells from patients that developed recurrent disease showed a high cytoplasmic location of both hPXR isoforms. Only the infiltrative carcinomas that relapsed before 48 mo showed nuclear location of hPXR isoform 2. This location was assocd. with the nuclear immunoexpression of RXR-alpha. Conclusion: Breast cancer cells can express both variants 1 and 2 of hPXR. Infiltrative carcinomas that recurred showed a nuclear location of both hPXR and RXR-alpha; therefore, the overexpression and the subcellular location changes of hPXR could be considered as a potential new prognostic indicator
