    Sites of Resistance: All-Ages Music Venues in their Local and Theoretical Contexts

    This paper shows how all-ages venues resist and contradict basic assumptions behind sociological, cultural policy and "creative cities" approaches to grassroots culture. We use literature review, geographical analysis, and a sound understanding of the actual nature of all-ages venues to discuss the relevance of these institutions to cultural policymaking and sociological theories of social capital alike.Our first section discusses the rise of all-ages venues in terms of a social movement, and posits the movement as a potential counternarrative to pessimistic visions of the future of social capital in youth communities. In our second section, we discuss the definitional and methodological issues in cultural policy that lead to the overlooking of grassroots, participatory, youth-oriented art worlds like those surrounding all-ages venues. Our third section places the rise of all-ages venues in the context of the "creative class" discourse on urban development. Nearby amenities, arts jobs, and high rents are all conventional signs of flourishing culture -- but are negativepredictors of all-ages venues. Instead, these all-ages venues comprise a set of "sites of resistance" across the country, encouraging youth social capital, leadership development and political organization in anti-corporate, communitarian, and ethically-rooted milieu

    An anagram is a word of the form WPWP where WW is a non-empty word and PP is a permutation of WW. We study anagram-free graph colouring and give bounds on the chromatic number. Alon et al. (2002) asked whether anagram-free chromatic number is bounded by a function of the maximum degree. We answer this question in the negative by constructing graphs with maximum degree 3 and unbounded anagram-free chromatic number. We also prove upper and lower bounds on the anagram-free chromatic number of trees in terms of their radius and pathwidth.     The development of a competence framework for engineering analysis and simulation

    Engineering analysis and simulation has always played a significant role in the nuclear sector and its use continues to increase across all branches of industry. To remain competitive in an increasingly global environment and to ensure the safety and reliability of products, companies must prepare effectively for the challenges that new engineering simulation technologies will bring. Concerns surrounding the inappropriate use of simulation by staff without the appropriate competences persist, as analyses become more advanced, increasingly embracing more complex physical phenomena and interactions, often in an effort to model reality more faithfully. These trends and the associated competencies required, emphasize the need for life-long learning and continual staff development. Organisations clearly require a sufficient and ongoing supply of well-qualified engineers and the recently funded EASIT2 project is directly aimed at addressing and managing these issues

    Transferring simulation skills from other industries to nuclear

    Engineering analysis and simulation has always played a significant role in the nuclear sector and its use continues to increase across all branches of industry. To remain competitive in an increasingly global environment and to ensure the safety and reliability of designs, the nuclear industry must take advantage of the new engineering simulation technologies. Concerns surrounding the inappropriate use of simulation by staff without the appropriate competency persist, as analyses become more advanced, increasingly embracing more complex physical phenomena, often in an effort to model reality more faithfully. Furthermore, the age profile of the skilled staff in the nuclear sector in the UK is such that the skills shortage is likely to increase in future. These trends emphasize the need for life-long learning and continual staff development along with transfer of skills from other industry sectors to the nuclear sector. The nuclear industry has taken some initiatives to address skill shortages through the National Skills Academy for Nuclear and Nuclear Energy Skills Alliance (NESA) but these are mostly focused on manufacturing and R&D skills. The recently completed EU funded EASIT2 project is directly aimed at addressing the engineering analysis and simulation skills. This paper gives a brief overview of the EASIT2 project and its deliverables and points out how it can help the skills issues being faced by the nuclear industry. INTRODUCTIO

    We argue that the limit of the propagation of the heap effects of a source code modification is determined by the aliasing structure of method parameters in a trace of the method calls that cross a boundary which partitions the heap. Further, that this aliasing structure is sufficient to uniquely determine the state of the part of the heap which has not been affected. And we give a definition of what it means for a part of the heap to be unaffected by a source code modification. This can be used to determine the correctness of a refactoring

    Current-eddy interaction in the Agulhas Return Current region from the seismic oceanography perspective

    Interleaving in the Agulhas Return Current (ARC) frontal region is commonly manifested in the form of thermohaline intrusions, as sub-tropical and sub-polar water masses of similar density meet. In Jan/Feb 2012, the Naval Research Laboratory and collaborators carried out a field experiment in which seismic and traditional hydrographic observations were acquired to examine frontal zone mixing processes. The high lateral resolution (10 m) of the seismic observations allowed fine-scale lateral tracking of thermal intrusions, which were corroborated with simultaneous XBT casts. Between seismic deployments both salinity and temperature data were acquired via CTD, Underway-CTD and microstructure profiles. This study focuses on analyzing seismic reflection data in a particular E-W transect where the northward flowing ARC interacted with the southward flowing portion of a large anticyclonic eddy. Strong reflectors were most prominent at the edge of a hyperbolic zone formed between the eddy and ARC, where sub-polar waters interacted with waters of sub-tropical origin on either side. Reflectors were shallow within the hyperbolic zone and extended to 1200 m below the ARC. The nature of the observed reflectors will be determined from comparison of seismic reflection and derived ∂T/∂z fields, and XBT and TS profiles from the available hydrographic data

    Statefulness and Tangible interaction in Design Education

    Interaction in Industrial Design is expanding from tangible realms to intangible digital experiences. In this new environment, Interaction Design provides logical sequences and behaviors that allow users to easily navigate through complex workflows. This paper discusses a framework in which interaction design provides an innovative approach to traditional industrial design. This includes the concept of ‘statefulness’, where the dynamic changes of complex systems are broken down into states that can be defined and manipulated in order to achieve a desired user experience. This framework goes beyond having physical components of a product control digital interfaces and develops experiences that jump between physical and virtual realms. The paper also describes how interaction and industrial design collaborations are put into practice in a graduate level studio course, in which students are directed by instructors with expertise in both disciplines, all working together in exploratory assignments

    The Orchard Sports Injury Classification System (OSICS) is one of the world’s most commonly used systems for coding injury diagnoses in sports injury surveillance systems. Its major strengths are that it has wide usage, has codes specific to sports medicine and that it is free to use. Literature searches and stakeholder consultations were made to assess the uptake of OSICS and to develop new versions. OSICS was commonly used in the sports of football (soccer), Australian football, rugby union, cricket and tennis. It is referenced in international papers in three sports and used in four commercially available computerised injury management systems. Suggested injury categories for the major sports are presented. New versions OSICS 9 (three digit codes) and OSICS 10.1 (four digit codes) are presented. OSICS is a potentially helpful component of a comprehensive sports injury surveillance system, but many other components are required. Choices made in developing these components should ideally be agreed upon by groups of researchers in consensus statements
