A three-year study of epipelagic fishes inhabiting Beaufort Sea coastal waters in Alaska documented spatial and temporal patterns in fish distribution and abundance and examined their relationships to thermohaline features during summer. Significant interannual, seasonal, and geographical differences in surface water temperatures and salinities were observed. In 1990, sea ice was absent and marine conditions prevailed, whereas in 1988 and 1991, heavy pack ice was present and the dissolution of the brackish water mass along the coast proceeded more slowly. Arctic cod, capelin, and liparids were the most abundant marine fishes in the catches, while arctic cisco was the only abundant diadromous freshwater species. Age-0 arctic cod were exceptionally abundant and large in 1990, while age-0 capelin dominated in the other years. The alternating numerical dominances of arctic cod and age-0 capelin may represent differing species' responses to wind-driven oceanographic processes affecting growth and survival. The only captures of age-0 arctic cisco occurred during 1990. Catch patterns indicate they use a broad coastal migratory corridor and tolerate high salinities. As in the oceanographic data, geographical and temporal patterns were apparent in the fish catch data, but in most cases these patterns were not statistically testable because of excessive zero catches. The negative binomial distribution appeared to be a suitable statistical descriptor of the aggregated catch patterns for the more common species.

Potential use of offshore marine structures in rebuilding an overfished rockfish species, bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis)

Although bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis) was an economically important rockfish species along the west coast of North America, overfishing has reduced the stock to about 7.4% of its former unfished population. In 2003, using a manned research submersible, we conducted fish surveys around eight oil and gas platforms off southern California as part of an assessment of the potential value of these structures as fish habitat. From these surveys, we estimated that there was a minimum of 430,000 juvenile bocaccio at these eight structures. We determined this number to be about 20% of the average number of juvenile bocaccio that survive annually for the geographic range of the species. When these juveniles become adults, they will contribute about one percent (0.8%) of the additional amount of fish needed to rebuild the Pacific Coast population. By comparison, juvenile bocaccio recruitment to nearshore natural nursery grounds, as determined through regional scuba surveys, was low in the same year. This research demonstrates that a relatively small amount of artificial nursery habitat may be quite valuable in rebuilding an overfished species

Does Unconscious Thought Outperform Conscious Thought On Complex Decisions? A Further Examination

Two experiments examined the benefits of unconscious thought on complex decisions (Dijksterhuis, 2004). Experiment 1 attempted to replicate and extend past research by examining the effect of providing reasons prior to rating the options. Results indicated no significant differences between the conditions. Experiment 2 attempted to replicate the findings of Dijksterhuis, Bos, Nordgren, and van Baaren (2006) and determine if a memory aid could overcome the limitations of conscious thought on complex tasks. Results revealed that a memory aid improved decisions compared to the conscious thought condition. Participants in the unconscious thought condition did not perform significantly better than did participants in the conscious thought condition

Single GPS Antenna Attitude Vector Pair - NEOSSat Recovery

    Get PDF
In flight, the Near Earth Object Surveillance Satellite (NEOSSat) lost use of its single-string magnetometer that was necessary to coarsely solve the attitude problem and seed the satellite\u27s star tracker for fine attitude determination. Unable to determine attitude, satellite control was lost and an ad-hoc, in-flight, solution was needed to recover operations. Building on existing GPS literature, NEOSSat\u27s GPS receiver was augmented, in software, to estimate the antenna\u27s look direction, in an inertial frame of reference. Matched with the known (mounting) vector in the body frame, a vector pair was successfully created that replaced the one from the magnetometer. This paper describes the mission context, algorithms, calibration methods, software implementation, testing (ground and flight) and optimizations that enabled the on-orbit GPS receiver to become a successful attitude sensor. The results, RMS errors within 10 degrees without mitigation of multipath effects, are generally applicable to satellites that have even just one GPS receiver and antenna and represent an alternate or back-up means of contributing to coarse attitude determination

Lived Time in Moments of Unease: Responsibility and Genuine Time in Professional Practice

Moments of moral disquiet encounter clock time as well as lived time, and thus professional human practices are existential and take place in time and space. Professional practices as existential involve human bodies and relationships, and are based on trust, responsibility, and vulnerability. The paper explores the relation between lived time and moments of disquiet. We borrow lived experience descriptions from students in professional practices and analyse them phenomenologically. Our informants are students in profession studies of nursing, social work and education interviewed individually in or after external institutional practice during their education. In the interviews they share their experiences of personal responsibility in situations orienting to others in professional practices. As a life existential, time shapes and organises our bodies and activities from birth to grave and is lived and experienced in a variety of ways in daily life and life as such. Time is thus a precondition of human life and life itself. Our interest in this paper is to show and argue phenomenological-pedagogically why and how it is of professional significance to teach students to take the required time to care, and to encourage them to be attentively present in situations when other persons’ lives take place

Professional development and study groups : perceptions of school personnel

ix, 78 leaves ; 29 cm. --Every year, school personnel embark on the road of professional growth. This road has traditionally taken the form of teacher professional growth plans (TPGPs). While the TPGP has enabled school personnel to set and strive toward personally directed professional development, the perception is that many of these goals have not been realized into their intended levels of authentic school improvement or enhanced learning in classrooms. This study evaluates the ability of study groups, as a professional development activity to impact school improvement. Forty school personnel were surveyed to determine the ability of study groups to facilitate goal setting, team learning, and professional dialogue as vehicles for lasting school improvement. Recommendations for linking these vehicles to action include providing time, a collegial environment, and encouragement to taking risks

This capstone project is in collaboration with Dr. Liz Mogford’s sociology capstone project titled Population Health Advocacy. The class was invited by the Whatcom County Health Department to conduct research on city and county Community Health Improvement priorities. These priorities include racial equity, youth mental health, housing and economic security. As part of a research team, we conducted interviews with 30 participants who were identified for their expertise in these priority areas. Our class was split into priority subgroups to conduct interviews and then, as an entire class, we analyzed our interviews to find commonalities across the three priorities. Our goal was to find the social determinants of health that could inform upstream solutions to the observed problems. After the analyzes by the priority subgroups were complete, I complied the analyzes and finalized the paper. The result is a document that helps inform programs, practices, and policy that were presented to the Health Department, the Board of Health, and the Public Health Advisory Board
