A case control study to determine the association between Perthes’ disease and the recalled use of tobacco during pregnancy, and biological markers of current tobacco smoke exposure
Aims: It is well established that there is a strong association between Perthes’ disease and worsening socioeconomic deprivation. It has been suggested that the primary determinant driving this association is exposure to tobacco smoke. This study aimed to examine this hypothesis. Patients and Methods: A hospital case-control study (n = 149/146) examined the association between tobacco smoke exposure and Perthes’ disease, adjusting for area-level socioeconomic deprivation. Tobacco smoke exposure was assessed by parental questionnaire of smoking habits during pregnancy, and by quantitative assay of current exposure using the urinary cotinine-creatinine ratio, which is a widely used and validated measure of tobacco smoke exposure. Results: The odds of Perthes’ disease significantly increased with reported in utero exposure after adjustment for socioeconomic deprivation (maternal smoking odds ratio (OR) 2.06, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.17 to 3.63; paternal smoking OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.26 to 3.46). The cotinine-creatinine ratio was significantly greater in cases, OR 1.63 (95% CI 1.09 to 2.43), suggesting a greater ‘dose’ of current tobacco exposure. Conclusion: An association exists between tobacco smoke exposure and Perthes’ disease but we remain unable to disentangle the association with socioeconomic deprivation
Ultrastructure of ostrich (Struthio camelus) spermatozoa. II. Scanning electron microscopy
The three-dimensional structure and size of ostrich sperm is unknown. In this study, the morphology and
dimensions of ostrich sperm were determined by scanning electron microscopy of semen samples obtained
from sexually mature males during the breeding season. The results indicate that sperm cells of
the ostrich are of the sauropsid type characteristic of non-passerine birds and, in general appearance, resemble
those of the chicken, turkey, guinea fowl, budgerigar and tinamou. They differ from tinamou sperm,
however, in that they do not show a small bump at the tip of the acrosome. Ostrich sperm are shorter
(69,6 μm total length) than those of the chicken, turkey and guinea fowl, but longer
than those of the budgerigar. A lack of information makes it impossible to compare the dimensions of
ostrich sperm with those of other ratites such as the rhea. In ostrich and guinea fowl, the sperm head
is proportionately longer than that of the chicken, turkey and budgerigar as determined by tail to head
ratios. Two distinct groups of ostriches could be distinguished on the basis of differences in the length
of various sperm cell components. This may reflect persistent genetic (subspecies) variations in the

Generic Finite Size Enhancement of Pairing in Mesoscopic Fermi Systems
The finite size dependent enhancement of pairing in mesoscopic Fermi systems
is studied under the assumption that the BCS approach is valid and that the two
body force is size independent. Different systems are investigated such as
superconducting metallic grains and films as well atomic nuclei. It is shown
that the finite size enhancement of pairing in these systems is in part due to
the presence of a surface which accounts quite well for the data of nuclei and
explains a good fraction of the enhancement in Al grains.Comment: Updated version 17/02/0
Electromagnetic field angular momentum in condensed matter systems
Various electromagnetic systems can carry an angular momentum in their {\bf
E} and {\bf B} fields. The electromagnetic field angular momentum (EMAM) of
these systems can combine with the spin angular momentum to give composite
fermions or composite bosons. In this paper we examine the possiblity that an
EMAM could provide an explanation of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE)
which is complimentary to the Chern-Simons explanation. We also examine a toy
model of a non-BCS superconductor (e.g. high superconductors) in terms of
an EMAM. The models presented give a common, simple picture of these two
systems in terms of an EMAM. The presence of an EMAM in these systems might be
tested through the observation of the decay modes of a charged, spin zero

Diffusive propagation of cosmic rays from supernova remnants in the Galaxy. I: spectrum and chemical composition
In this paper we investigate the effect of stochasticity in the spatial and
temporal distribution of supernova remnants on the spectrum and chemical
composition of cosmic rays observed at Earth. The calculations are carried out
for different choices of the diffusion coefficient D(E) experienced by cosmic
rays during propagation in the Galaxy. In particular, at high energies we
assume that D(E)\sim E^{\delta}, with and being the
reference scenarios. The large scale distribution of supernova remnants in the
Galaxy is modeled following the distribution of pulsars, with and without
accounting for the spiral structure of the Galaxy. We find that the stochastic
fluctuations induced by the spatial and temporal distribution of supernovae,
together with the effect of spallation of nuclei, lead to mild but sensible
violations of the simple, leaky-box-inspired rule that the spectrum observed at
Earth is with , where
is the slope of the cosmic ray injection spectrum at the sources. Spallation of
nuclei, even with the small rates appropriate for He, may account for slight
differences in spectral slopes between different nuclei, providing a possible
explanation for the recent CREAM observations. For we find that
the slope of the proton and helium spectra are and
respectively at energies above 1 TeV (to be compared with the measured values
of and ). For the hardening of the He
spectra is not observed. We also comment on the effect of time dependence of
the escape of cosmic rays from supernova remnants, and of a possible clustering
of the sources in superbubbles. In a second paper we will discuss the

Deformation of Small Compressed Droplets
We investigate the elastic properties of small droplets under compression.
The compression of a bubble by two parallel plates is solved exactly and it is
shown that a lowest-order expansion of the solution reduces to a form similar
to that obtained by Morse and Witten. Other systems are studied numerically and
results for configurations involving between 2 and 20 compressing planes are
presented. It is found that the response to compression depends on the number
of planes. The shear modulus is also calculated for common lattices and the

Baseline neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio holds no prognostic value for esophageal and junctional adenocarcinoma in patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy
BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported that neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) can predict survival in esophageal and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma, as it reflects systemic inflammation. Hence, we aimed to determine whether baseline NLR holds prognostic value for esophageal adenocarcinoma patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (nCT) followed by surgery. METHODS: We studied the data of 139 patients that received nCT before undergoing esophagectomy with curative intent, all identified from a prospectively maintained database (1998-2016). Pretreatment hematology reports were used to calculate the baseline NLR. A receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC-curve) was plotted to determine an optimal cutoff value. NLR quartiles were used to display possible differences between groups in relation to overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) using the method of Kaplan-Meier. Cox regression analysis was performed to assess the prognostic value of NLR. RESULTS: The median OS and DFS times were 46 months (interquartile range [IQR]: 19-166) and 30 months (IQR: 13-166], respectively, for the entire cohort. The ROC-curve showed that NLR has no discriminating power for survival status (area under the curve = 0.462) and therefore no optimal cutoff value could be determined. There were no statistically significant differences in median OS times for NLR quartiles: 65 (Q1), 32 (Q2), 45 (Q3), and 46 months (Q4) (P = 0.926). Similarly, DFS showed no difference between quartile groups, with median survival times of 27 (Q1), 19 (Q2), 36 (Q3), and 20 months (Q4) (P = 0.973). Age, pN, pM, and resection margin were independent prognostic factors for both OS and DFS. On the contrary, NLR was not associated with OS or DFS in univariable and multivariable analyses. CONCLUSION: Baseline NLR holds no prognostic value for esophageal and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma patients treated with nCT in this study, in contrast to other recently published papers. This result questions the validity of NLR as a reliable prognostic indicator and its clinical usefulness in these patients
The closest elastic tensor of arbitrary symmetry to an elasticity tensor of lower symmetry
The closest tensors of higher symmetry classes are derived in explicit form
for a given elasticity tensor of arbitrary symmetry. The mathematical problem
is to minimize the elastic length or distance between the given tensor and the
closest elasticity tensor of the specified symmetry. Solutions are presented
for three distance functions, with particular attention to the Riemannian and
log-Euclidean distances. These yield solutions that are invariant under
inversion, i.e., the same whether elastic stiffness or compliance are
considered. The Frobenius distance function, which corresponds to common
notions of Euclidean length, is not invariant although it is simple to apply
using projection operators. A complete description of the Euclidean projection
method is presented. The three metrics are considered at a level of detail far
greater than heretofore, as we develop the general framework to best fit a
given set of moduli onto higher elastic symmetries. The procedures for finding
the closest elasticity tensor are illustrated by application to a set of 21

Symmetry and topology in antiferromagnetic spintronics
Antiferromagnetic spintronics focuses on investigating and using
antiferromagnets as active elements in spintronics structures. Last decade
advances in relativistic spintronics led to the discovery of the staggered,
current-induced field in antiferromagnets. The corresponding N\'{e}el
spin-orbit torque allowed for efficient electrical switching of
antiferromagnetic moments and, in combination with electrical readout, for the
demonstration of experimental antiferromagnetic memory devices. In parallel,
the anomalous Hall effect was predicted and subsequently observed in
antiferromagnets. A new field of spintronics based on antiferromagnets has
emerged. We will focus here on the introduction into the most significant
discoveries which shaped the field together with a more recent spin-off
focusing on combining antiferromagnetic spintronics with topological effects,
such as antiferromagnetic topological semimetals and insulators, and the
interplay of antiferromagnetism, topology, and superconductivity in
