    Structural ambiguity of the Chinese version of the hospital anxiety and depression scale in patients with coronary heart disease

    Background The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) is a widely used screening tool designed as a case detector for clinically relevant anxiety and depression. Recent studies of the HADS in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients in European countries suggest it comprises three, rather than two, underlying sub-scale dimensions. The factor structure of the Chinese version of the HADS was evaluated in patients with CHD in mainland China. Methods Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted on self-report HADS forms from 154 Chinese CHD patients. Results Little difference was observed in model fit between best performing three-factor and two-factor models. Conclusion The current observations are inconsistent with recent studies highlighting a dominant underlying tri-dimensional structure to the HADS in CHD patients. The Chinese version of the HADS may perform differently to European language versions of the instrument in patients with CHD

    Quality of Life in a Mixed Ethnic Population after Myocardial Infarction

    Background: Although South Asian people are a significant ethnic group at increased risk of coronary heart disease and high mortality rates and experience greater delays with respect to diagnosis, referral and treatment, comparatively little is known about their quality of life during recovery from a myocardial infarction.Objectives: We sought to determine and compare the impact of ethnicity on quality of life after myocardial infarction (MI) in a mixed ethnic population (South Asian and white people) in the UK.Methods: A 2x2 mixed-group design with repeated measures on the second factor. The independent variables were ethnic group (white/South Asian) and time since MI (2 weeks/3 months). The dependent variables were the subscale scores on the Short-Form 36-item health survey (SF-36) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).Results: At 2 weeks, significant differences were observed between groups on 5 of the 8 SF-36 subscale domain scores, with the white group reporting higher quality of life. Significant improvement in reported quality of life occurred in both groups over time on all domains of the SF-36, except bodily pain. There was a significantly greater improvement in favour of the white group for the role-physical domain. There was no significant difference between groups in terms of anxiety or depression at 2 weeks. Both groups showed a significant reduction in anxiety and depression by 3 months, but the degree of reduction was not significantly different between them. At 3 months, there was no significant difference between groups in terms of anxiety scores, but the South Asian group scored significantly higher on the depression scale.Conclusions: South Asian people have significantly poorer quality of life than white people after MI. While both groups showed improvement over time, South Asian people reported significantly less improvement in physical role function and were more depressed at 3 months. Identifying the factors accounting for such differences is important to develop models of care for delivering the most effective and culturally-sensitive interventions to this group

    Modelling the flow of droplets of bio-pesticide on foliage

    The flow of droplets of bio-pesticide, liquid laden with entomapathogenic nematodes (EPNs), over foliage approximated as a planar substrate is investigated theoretically via a simple analytical model and computationally by solving a subset of the Navier-Stokes equations arising from application of the long-wave approximation. That the droplets of interest can be represented as a homogeneous liquid is established via complementary experiments revealing the presence of EPNs to have negligible influence on bio-pesticide droplet spray distribution predeposition. Both approaches are used to study key issues affecting the migration of droplets over substrates relevant to pesticide deposition processes, including the effect (i) of droplet size and flow inertia on droplet morphology and coverage and (ii) of adaxial (above the leaf) or abaxial (under the leaf) flow orientations. The computational results obtained when inertia is accounted for are generally found to compare well with those given by the simple analytical model − a droplet's velocity relaxes to its terminal value very quickly, at which point gravitational, viscous, and hysteresis forces are in balance; substrate orientation is found to have only a minor influence on the extent of droplet migration

    Thermomechanical deformation behavior and mechanisms in transition metal carbides

    Mechanical testing over 2000oC is arduous because of the required heating, compliance in components, and potential specimen reactions to name a few. In this talk, the use of a non-contact means of thermomechanical loading, initially demonstrated by Gangireddy and Halloran, is applied to TaC and HfC. By passing a current through the carbide, it is resistively heated and, in the presence of a magnetic field, the specimen bends under the Lorentz force. Using a variety of loads and temperatures up to 3000oC, the thermomechanical behavior is quantified for a series of tantalum and hafnium carbides. Findings include more deflection in TaC than HfC at equivalent load/temperatures which is contributed to TaC’s ease of {111} slip. At failure, TaC exhibited abnormal grain growth with multiple slip band formations on the fractured surface. In contrast, HfC exhibited minimal grain growth and substantially less slip band formations. Additional studies determining the relationship between load at failure as a function of temperature were determined. The collective results will be discussed in terms of TEM and DFT analysis of slip mechanisms in transition metal carbides

    Chandra Monitoring of the Candidate Anomalous X-ray Pulsar AX J1845.0-0258

    The population of clearly identified anomalous X-ray pulsars has recently grown to seven, however, one candidate anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) still eludes re-confirmation. Here, we present a set of seven Chandra ACIS-S observations of the transient pulsar AX J1845.0-0258, obtained during 2003. Our observations reveal a faint X-ray point source within the ASCA error circle of AX J1845.0-0258's discovery, which we designate CXOU J184454.6-025653 and tentatively identify as the quiescent AXP. Its spectrum is well described by an absorbed single-component blackbody (kT~2.0 keV) or power law (Gamma~1.0) that is steady in flux on timescales of at least months, but fainter than AX J1845.0-0258 was during its 1993 period of X-ray enhancement by at least a factor of 13. Compared to the outburst spectrum of AX J1845.0-0258, CXOU J184454.6-025653 is considerably harder: if truly the counterpart, then its spectral behaviour is contrary to that seen in the established transient AXP XTE J1810-197, which softened from kT~0.67 keV to ~0.18 keV in quiescence. This unexpected result prompts us to examine the possibility that we have observed an unrelated source, and we discuss the implications for AXPs, and magnetars in general.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.     The effect of SU-8 patterned surfaces on the response of the quartz crystal microbalance

    In this work we present data showing the effect of patterning layers of SU-8 photoresist on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and subsequent chemical treatment to increase their hydrophobicity. Patterns with 5 mu m diameter pillars spaced every 10 mu m have been fabricated with heights of 3, 5 and 10 mu m in addition to equivalent thickness flat layers. Contact angle measurements have been made before and after the hydrophobic chemical treatment. The change in resonant frequency of the QCM has been investigated as the surfaces were submerged in solutions of water/PEG with changing viscosity-density product

    The association of osteoarthritis risk factors with localized, regional and diffuse knee pain

    SummaryObjectiveTo identify determinants of different patterns of knee pain with a focus on risk factors for knee osteoarthritis (OA).DesignThe Knee Pain Map is an interviewer-administered assessment that asks subjects to characterize their knee pain as localized, regional, or diffuse. A total of 2677 participants from the Osteoarthritis Initiative were studied.We used multinomial logistic regression to examine the relationship between risk factors for OA and knee pain patterns. We examined the bivariate and multivariate relationships of knee pain pattern with age, body mass index (BMI), sex, race, family history of total joint replacement, knee injury, knee surgery, and hand OA.ResultsWe compared 2462 knees with pain to 1805 knees without pain. In the bivariate analysis, age, sex, BMI, injury, surgery, and hand OA were associated with at least one pain pattern. In the multivariate model, all of these variables remained significantly associated with at least one pattern. When compared to knees without pain, higher BMI, injury, and surgery were associated with all patterns. BMI had its strongest association with diffuse pain. Older age was less likely to be associated with localized pain while female sex was associated with regional pain.ConclusionsWe have shown that specific OA risk factors are associated with different knee pain patterns. Better understanding of the relationship between OA risk factors and knee pain patterns may help to characterize the heterogeneous subsets of knee OA

    Excited B mesons from the lattice

    We determine the energies of the excited states of a heavy-light meson QqˉQ\bar{q}, with a static heavy quark and light quark with mass approximately that of the strange quark from both quenched lattices and with dynamical fermions. We are able to explore the energies of orbital excitations up to L=3, the spin-orbit splitting up to L=2 and the first radial excitation. These bsˉb \bar{s} mesons will be very narrow if their mass is less than 5775 MeV -- the BKBK threshold. We investigate this in detail and present evidence that the scalar meson (L=1) will be very narrow and that as many as 6 bsˉb \bar{s} excited states will have energies close to the BKBK threshold and should also be relatively narrow.Comment: 17 pages, 6 ps figure

    Pseudogap Formation in the Symmetric Anderson Lattice Model

    We present self-consistent calculations for the self-energy and magnetic susceptibility of the 2D and 3D symmetric Anderson lattice Hamiltonian, in the fluctuation exchange approximation. At high temperatures, strong f-electron scattering leads to broad quasiparticle spectral functions, a reduced quasiparticle band gap, and a metallic density of states. As the temperature is lowered, the spectral functions narrow and a pseudogap forms at the characteristic temperature TxT_x at which the width of the quasiparticle spectral function at the gap edge is comparable to the renormalized activation energy. For T<<TxT << T_x , the pseudogap is approximately equal to the hybridization gap in the bare band structure. The opening of the pseudogap is clearly apparent in both the spin susceptibility and the compressibility.Comment: RevTeX - 14 pages and 7 figures (available on request), NRL-JA-6690-94-002

    Distinctive diets of eutherian predators in Australia

    Introduction of the domestic cat and red fox has devastated Australian native fauna. We synthesized Australian diet analyses to identify traits of prey species in cat, fox and dingo diets, which prey were more frequent or distinctive to the diet of each predator, and quantified dietary overlap. Nearly half (45%) of all Australian terrestrial mammal, bird and reptile species occurred in the diets of one or more predators. Cat and dingo diets overlapped least (0.64 ± 0.27, n = 24 location/time points) and cat diet changed little over 55 years of study. Cats were more likely to have eaten birds, reptiles and small mammals than foxes or dingoes. Dingo diet remained constant over 53 years and constituted the largest mammal, bird and reptile prey species, including more macropods/potoroids, wombats, monotremes and bandicoots/bilbies than cats or foxes. Fox diet had greater overlap with both cats (0.79 ± 0.20, n = 37) and dingoes (0.73 ± 0.21, n = 42), fewer distinctive items (plant material, possums/gliders) and significant spatial and temporal heterogeneity over 69 years, suggesting the opportunity for prey switching (especially of mammal prey) to mitigate competition. Our study reinforced concerns about mesopredator impacts upon scarce/threatened species and the need to control foxes and cats for fauna conservation. However, extensive dietary overlap and opportunism, as well as low incidence of mesopredators in dingo diets, precluded resolution of the debate about possible dingo suppression of foxes and cats
