The problem of corporality in Max Blecher’s and Bruno Schulz’s prose from the perspective of philosophical anthropology
The article discusses the problem of corporality in Max Blecher’s novels and Bruno Schulz’s short stories from the perspective of philosophical anthropology. The motifs of body and matter, predominant in both authors’ work, are a means of presenting the place of man in the universe and dealing with such questions as identity or ontology. Through the use of somatic metaphors all the elements of the fictional world are anthropomorphised or given human characteristics, which leads to the lack of hierarchy. Whereas philosophical anthropology presents humans as active and rational beings, Blecher and Schulz stress the illusion of man’s individuality and question his privileged position in the world. The article discusses the problem of corporality in Max Blecher’s novels and Bruno Schulz’s short stories from the perspective of philosophical anthropology. Redescription of Antennoseius (Vitzthumia) oudemansi (Acari, Mesostigmata) from Spitsbergen, Svalbard
Redescriptions of adult female, male and new descriptions of the deutonymph and protonymph stages of Antennoseius oudemansi Thor, 1930, collected from terra tipica (Spitsbergen in the High Arctic) are presented. Due to the absence of type material (holotype and paratypes), and also the lack of a complete description, new material became the basis for the first detailed description of this species, and female and male neotypes are designated
A Representation of illness in the novel "A Concert of Bach’s music" by Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu
The article discusses the problem of illness in the novel A Concert of Bach’s music by Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu, a Romanian interwar writer considered to be a precursor of Romanian psychological prose. Illness, being one of the major themes in her writings, has usually been interpreted as a reflection of Romanian declining society. In the present article, we analyse the most interesting example of a sick character in Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu’s novels, that is prince Maxentiu, who suffers from tuberculosis. We suggest some possible interpretations of his case in the context of contemporary scientific research, especially in the domain of the sociology of illness. We discuss, among others, illness as a biographical disruption, the problem of character’s personal and social identity in chronic illness, as well as his attitude towards death
Special topic: The association between pulse ingredients and canine dilated cardiomyopathy: addressing the knowledge gaps before establishing causation.
In July 2018, the Food and Drug Administration warned about a possible relationship between dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs and the consumption of dog food formulated with potatoes and pulse ingredients. This issue may impede utilization of pulse ingredients in dog food or consideration of alternative proteins. Pulse ingredients have been used in the pet food industry for over 2 decades and represent a valuable source of protein to compliment animal-based ingredients. Moreover, individual ingredients used in commercial foods do not represent the final nutrient concentration of the complete diet. Thus, nutritionists formulating dog food must balance complementary ingredients to fulfill the animal's nutrient needs in the final diet. There are multiple factors that should be considered, including differences in nutrient digestibility and overall bioavailability, the fermentability and quantity of fiber, and interactions among food constituents that can increase the risk of DCM development. Taurine is a dispensable amino acid that has been linked to DCM in dogs. As such, adequate supply of taurine and/or precursors for taurine synthesis plays an important role in preventing DCM. However, requirements of amino acids in dogs are not well investigated and are presented in total dietary content basis which does not account for bioavailability or digestibility. Similarly, any nutrient (e.g., soluble and fermentable fiber) or physiological condition (e.g., size of the dog, sex, and age) that increases the requirement for taurine will also augment the possibility for DCM development. Dog food formulators should have a deep knowledge of processing methodologies and nutrient interactions beyond meeting the Association of American Feed Control Officials nutrient profiles and should not carelessly follow unsubstantiated market trends. Vegetable ingredients, including pulses, are nutritious and can be used in combination with complementary ingredients to meet the nutritional needs of the dog
Redescription of Arctoseius haarlovi Lindquist, 1963 (Acari: Ascidae) from Spitsbergen, Svalbard
New descriptions of adult female, male and deutonymph body morphs of Arctoseius haarlovi Lindquist, 1963, collected from Spitsbergen in the High Arctic are presented. The occurrence of this species and its preferred microhabitats are described based both on the published literature and our own collections. An analysis of the morphological variability in A. haarlovi and a comparison with other species in this genus are given
Phoretic relationships between Plagionotus detritus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) and Trichouropoda sociata (Acari: Mesostigmata)
The aim of the study was to explore phoretic relationships between Plagionotus detritus and mites from the order Mesostigmata. In total, 635 individuals of P. detritus were caught, and mites were found on 86 of them. The dominant species among 8,154 individuals of mites was Trichouropoda sociata (8,152 individuals), and the sporadically found species were Lasioseius thermophilus (1 ind.) and Typhlodromus sp. (1 ind.). Generally, the difference in the total abundance of females and males of P. detritus was not statistically significant (311 females vs 324 males). The proportional abundance of P. detritus with T. sociata differed between samplings, and in the pooled data, the proportional abundance of P. detritus females with T. sociata (39.5%) was less than that for P. detritus males (60.5%)
