High resolution spectroscopy of H II Galaxies: Structure and Supersonic line widths

    Get PDF
We present high resolution echelle spectroscopy of a sample of H II galaxies. In all galaxies we identify different H(alpha) emitting knots along the slit crossing the nucleus. All of these have been isolated and separately analyzed through luminosity and size vs diagnosis plots. We find that in all cases, for a particular galaxy, the bulk of emission comes from their main knot and therefore, at least for the compact class galaxies we are dealing with, luminosity and sigma values measured using single aperture observations would provide similar results to what is obtained with spatially resolved spectroscopy. In the size vs plots as expected there is a shift in the correlations depending on whether we are including all emission in a single point or we split it in its different emitting knots. The problem of a proper determination of the size of the emitting region so that it can be used to determine the mass of the system remains open. From the data set gathered, using the highest surface brightness points as recently proposed by Fuentes-Masip et al. (2000), the best luminosity vs correlation turns out to be consistent with a Virial model.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, ApJ accepted. Tromboendarterectomia Pulmonar em Portugal: Experiência Inicial

    Get PDF
Introduction: Surgical treatment for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is challenging. Most Portuguese patients with CTEPH have been referred to foreign institutions for treatment, with significant social and economic costs. To meet this emerging need, the cardiothoracic surgery department of Hospital de Santa Marta, Lisbon, has developed a dedicated program for pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE). We hereby present the results for the first 19 patients treated. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all 19 patients who underwent PTE at Hospital de Santa Marta between 2008 and April 2019. Results: Since 2008, a total of 19 patients have undergone PTE in our department. The procedure was performed with good outcomes in both survival and functional recovery. At the very beginning of the series two patients died perioperatively, before all the team underwent formal training at the Royal Papworth Hospital, UK, with no early deaths since. Postoperative complications were similar to other published series. During 11 years of follow-up, there were three late deaths, all in patients with residual pulmonary arterial hypertension. At the latest follow-up (October 2019), all surviving patients showed significant functional recovery, all in NYHA class I or II, with only one patient on vasodilator therapy with sildenafil (the first in the series, operated in 2008). Conclusions: PTE is a demanding procedure, in which outcomes are related to volume and accumulated experience, however it can be performed safely and with reproducible results by a properly prepared dedicated team with a well-controlled learning curve. More patients and multidisciplinary experience will be needed to further improve and streamline results.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Charophytes from Silveirinha (?Upper Paleocene - Lowermost Eocene) according to Janine Riveline

    Get PDF
Charophytae gyrogonites are common among the washing/sieving residues from the important ?Upper Paleocene or lowermost Eocene site of Silveirinha (lower Mondego, Portugal). The whole Charophyte material has been submitted to Janine Riveline, who recognized but Nitellopsis (Tectochara) dutemplei (Watelet)Grambast & Souliè-Marsche minor Riveline. This form has been found in the lacustrine marls overlying the "Conglomerat de Cernay" that is rich in late Thanetian vertebrates. Taking into account the presence of the above referred form, the age of the concerned sediments may be (not basal) Sparnacian, Peckichara disermas Charophyte zone

Rupicapra rupicapra (Mammalia) in the Late Pleistocene of Portugal

The presence of the genus Rupicapra in Portugal is shown for the first time, on some dental and skeletal remains from the upper Pleistocene (Solutrean) of Salemas cave. The fossil material may be ascribed to R. rupicapra pyrenaica

Limnic ostracoda from Silveirinha, Portugal (? Late Paleocene - Lowermost Eocene)

    Get PDF
Silveirinha, a rich site for mammals and other vertebrates, yielded some molluscs, charophytes and ostracods. The latter are described here. Eight species were recognized. Two of them, Ilyocypris lusitanicus n. sp. and Cypris silveirinhaensis n. sp. are new. Other, unnamed species may be ascribed to Cyclocypris? and Cypria? besides a further four undeterminate Cypridacea. The Ostracod association is typical for limnic environments and is compatible with intertropical conditions. Cypris silveirinhaensis suggests an Eocene, and especially a lower Eocene age

The circumstellar medium of the peculiar supernova SN1997ab

We report the detection of the slow moving wind into which the compact supernova remnant SN 1997ab is expanding. Echelle spectroscopy provides clear evidence for a well resolved narrow (Full Width at Zero Intensity, FWZI ~ 180 km/s) P-Cygni profile, both in Ha and Hb, superimposed on the broad emission lines of this compact supernova remnant. From theoretical arguments we know that the broad and strong emission lines imply a circumstellar density (n ~ 10^7 cm^-3). This, together with our detection, implies a massive and slow stellar wind experienced by the progenitor star shortly prior to the explosion.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, acepted for publication in MNRAS.
