    Memory vectors for similarity search in high-dimensional spaces

    We study an indexing architecture to store and search in a database of high-dimensional vectors from the perspective of statistical signal processing and decision theory. This architecture is composed of several memory units, each of which summarizes a fraction of the database by a single representative vector. The potential similarity of the query to one of the vectors stored in the memory unit is gauged by a simple correlation with the memory unit's representative vector. This representative optimizes the test of the following hypothesis: the query is independent from any vector in the memory unit vs. the query is a simple perturbation of one of the stored vectors. Compared to exhaustive search, our approach finds the most similar database vectors significantly faster without a noticeable reduction in search quality. Interestingly, the reduction of complexity is provably better in high-dimensional spaces. We empirically demonstrate its practical interest in a large-scale image search scenario with off-the-shelf state-of-the-art descriptors.Comment: Accepted to IEEE Transactions on Big Dat

    Analysis of Ammunition by X-Ray Fluorescence

    Nondestructive analysis of lead shotgun pellets by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) shows considerable promise in assignment of the identity of the ammunition source. X-ray fluorescence spectra of various shotgun pellets and of standard alloys were obtained using an energy-dispersive instrument and an Am-241 source. The correlation obtained between the precent antimony in the standard alloys and the intensity of the Ka fluorescence peak from antimony was excellent. Peak areas from antimony in shotgun pellets were measured and compared to calibration plots from the standard alloys. The method was capable of distinguishing among lead-based alloys, such as ammunition, with antimony content as high as 10%

    Foreign Body Aspiration in Northern Ghana: A Review of Pediatric Patients

    Background. Foreign body (FB) aspiration requires a high index of suspicion for diagnosis and prompt management to avoid morbidity and mortality. This retrospective study was conducted to review pediatric foreign body aspiration at the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Unit of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). Materials and Methods. The theater records of children managed for foreign body aspiration from January 2010 to December 2016 at the ENT Unit of TTH were retrieved and data summarized with respect to age, gender, indications for bronchoscopy, nature of foreign body, location of foreign body, and outcome of the bronchoscopy procedure. Results. A total of 33 children were managed within the five-year study period and comprised 16 (48.5%) males and 17 (51.5%) females. The commonly aspirated FBs were groundnuts (13, 39.4%) and metallic objects (7, 21.1%). The peak incidence occurred in children aged ≤ 3 years. The foreign bodies (FBs) were commonly localized to the right (24.2%) and left (24.2%) main bronchi, respectively. One patient had emergency tracheostomy for failed bronchoscopy. Conclusion. Groundnuts were the most commonly aspirated foreign body with most of the FBs localized in the bronchi

    Many types of research imply young entrepreneur is different from the other entrepreneur that exist. Recently the millennial generations possess more entrepreneurial potential than the previous generation. Some of the millennials believe that to become an entrepreneur could increase their career level and prosperous future. Interestingly about 50% of financial and technology company founders are the millennials, but it appears that the business world is currently being run by millennials is quite difficult to survive compare with the other that already mature in business. The aim of this paper is to explore the characteristics of entrepreneur among the millennial generations at the capital city in Indonesia. This research has been conducted on a group of 80 millennials in Jakarta as one of the capital and creative cities in Indonesia. The results of this study can be used by millennials who want to become an entrepreneur. Furthermore, this research can be used also as a self-screening to understand their entrepreneurial characteristics, before starting a new business

    Antioxidant activity of panJe tea combination of pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius) and jahe (Zingiber officinale)

    Herbal tea are popular because of their potential herbal medicine, a blend of herbal ingredients, promised to provide a specific purpose. The main purpose is to determine antioxidant activity in herbal teas (pandan mixed ginger) and in their infusions, as well as to obtain more complex information about the tea products. In this study, DPPH radical scavenging, H2O2 scavenging, ABTS reduction, and FRAP reduction assay were carried out. These assays are proved that the IC50 values of ginger are higher than PanJe and pandan. For DPPH scavenging, H2O2 scavenging, FRAP scavenging, ABTS reduction activities, PanJe resulted IC50 14.69 μg/mL, 27.70 μg/mL, 7.09 μg/mL, and 411.28 µg/mL, while ginger yielded IC50 7.76 μg/mL, 13.23 μg/mL, 4.94 μg/mL ,and  125.95 respectively. Otherwise, the highest total phenolic and flavonoid of panje were shown at 1.60 ± 0.26 µg QE / 100% extract and 8.67 ± 0.80 µg QE/100% extract respectively. Based on these results, PanJe, pandan and ginger are concluded as an active natural product because it exhibited antioxidant activities from two mixed compounds
