    ‘Low cost’ three phase to single phase matrix converter

It shows the basic operation of this type of converter, the modulation used and its implementation on a low cost microcontroller.     Micromechanical analysis of kinematic hardening in natural clay

    This paper presents a micromechanical analysis of the macroscopic behaviour of natural clay. A microstructural stress-strain model for clayey material has been developed which considers clay as a collection of clusters. The deformation of a representative volume of the material is generated by mobilizing and compressing all the clusters along their contact planes. Numerical simulations of multistage drained triaxial stress paths on Otaniemi clay have been performed and compared the numerical results to the experimental ones in order to validate the modelling approach. Then, the numerical results obtained at the microscopic level were analysed in order to explain the induced anisotropy observed in the clay behaviour at the macroscopic level. The evolution of the state variables at each contact plane during loading can explain the changes in shape and position in the stress space of the yield surface at the macroscopic level, as well as the rotation of the axes of anisotropy of the material

    Cycling comfort on asphalt pavement: Influence of the pavement-tyre interface on vibration

    Attainment of cycling comfort on urban roads encourages travelers to use bicycles more often, which has social and environment benefits such as to reduce congestion, air pollution and carbon emissions. Cycling vibration is responsible for the cyclists’ perception of (dis)comfort. How asphalt pavement's surface characteristics relate to cycling comfort, however, remains undiscovered. In this study, the cycling vibration intensity on 46 sections of 24 urban roads was tested using a dynamic cycling comfort measure system while the cyclists’ perception of vibration was identified via questionnaires; the cycling comfort was then defined based on the cycling vibration. To record the accurate pavement-tyre interface under a stable environment, a total of 19 pavement sections were scanned using a 3D digital camera. These 3D models were then 3D printed, which are used to conduct the pressure film test using a self-developed pavement-tyre interface test system. Three ranges of pressure films were adopted to characterize the pavement-tyre interface via 9 parameters, namely contact area (A c ), unit bearing area (B u ), stress intensity (S i ), stress uniformity (S u ), kurtosis (S ku ), spacing (Sp a ), maximum peak spacing (Sp max ), radius ratio (R r ) and fractal dimension (F d ), in consideration of the area characteristics, pressure amplitude, peak spacing and shape of the interface. Finally, the significant interface parameters were identified, and the regression model between interface parameters and cycling comfort was established. Results show that the cycling vibration was described to be ‘very comfortable’ when the human exposure to vibration level (a wv ) was less than 1.78 m/s 2 ; ‘comfortable’ when the a wv was between 1.78 m/s 2 and 2.20 m/s 2 ; and ‘uncomfortable’ when the a wv was greater than 2.20 m/s 2 . The average stress on rear wheel-pavement interface is higher than that of the front wheel. B u-0.6 , Sp a-0.6 , and F d-0.6 are significant to cycling vibration. The 2LW pressure film is recommended for use to measure the bicycle pavement-tyre interface. The recommended interface characteristics are less than 7 mm 2 of the unit bearing area, 6 mm of average spacing and 2.38 of fractal dimension. Finally, dense asphalt mixture performs better in providing cycling comfort than the gap-graded asphalt mixture. Results of this study contribute to current knowledge on bike lane comfort and pavement design, the findings should be interested in cyclists, transport planners, and road authorities

    Causes and differentials of childhood mortality in Iraq

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Limited information is available in Iraq regarding the causes of under-five mortality. The vital registration system is deficient in its coverage, particularly from rural areas where access to health services is limited and most deaths occur at home, i.e. outside the health system, and hence the cause of death goes unreported. Knowledge of patterns and trends in causes of under-five mortality is essential for decision-makers in assessing programmatic needs, prioritizing interventions, and monitoring progress. The aim of this study was to identify causes of under-five children deaths using a simplified verbal autopsy questionnaire.</p> <p>The objective was to define the leading symptoms and cause of death among Iraqi children from all regions of Iraq during 1994–1999.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To determine the cause structure of child deaths, a simplified verbal autopsy questionnaire was used in interviews conducted in the Iraqi Child & Maternal Mortality Survey (ICMMS) 1999 national sample. All the mothers/caregivers of the deceased children were asked open-ended questions about the symptoms within the two weeks preceding death; they could mention more than one symptom.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The leading cause of death among under-five children was found to be childhood illnesses in 81.2%, followed by sudden death in 8.9% and accidents in 3.3%. Among under-five children dying of illnesses, cough and difficulty in breathing were the main symptoms preceding death in 34.0%, followed by diarrhea in 24.4%. Among neonates the leading cause was cough/and or difficulty in breathing in 42.3%, followed by sudden death in 11.9%, congenital abnormalities in 10.3% and prematurity in 10.2%. Diarrhea was the leading cause of death among infants in 49.8%, followed by cough and/or difficulty in breathing in 26.6%. Among children 12–59 months diarrhea was the leading cause of death in 43.4%, followed by accidents, injuries, and poisoning in 19.3%, then cough/difficulty in breathing in 14.8%.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In Iraq Under-five child mortality is one of the highest in the Middle East region; deaths during the neonatal period accounted for more than half of under-five children deaths highlighting an urgent need to introduce health interventions to improve essential neonatal care. Priority needs to be given to the prevention, early and effective treatment of neonatal conditions, diarrheal diseases, acute respiratory infections, and accidents. This study points to the need for further standardized assessments of under-5 mortality in Iraq.</p

    The Control of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Blood Stream infections in England

    Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) blood stream infection (BSI) is a major healthcare burden in some but not all healthcare settings, and it is associated with 10%–20% mortality. The introduction of mandatory reporting in England of MRSA BSI in 2001 was followed in 2004 by the setting of target reductions for all National Health Service hospitals. The original national target of a 50% reduction in MRSA BSI was considered by many experts to be unattainable, and yet this goal has been far exceeded (∼80% reduction with rates still declining). The transformation from endemic to sporadic MRSA BSI involved the implementation of serial national infection prevention directives, and the deployment of expert improvement teams in organizations failed to meet their improvement trajectory targets. We describe and appraise the components of the major public health infection prevention campaign that yielded major reductions in MRSA infection. There are important lessons and opportunities for other healthcare systems where MRSA infection remains endemic

    Linear dispersion codes for a (not so) large number of receive antennas

    Linear dispersion codes (LDC) are high-rate codes that exploit both the spectral efficiency and the diversity a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system may offer. However they are complex to design for high spectral efficiency and their designs have been limited to the case of independent and identically Rayleigh distributed (i.i.d.) channels. In this paper we design channel correlation based LDC under the assumption of a large number of receive antennas and show by simulations. that large gains can he obtained from such designed codes. Moreover, deep connections between so designed codes and capacity achieving codes are pointed out.Anglai

    Improved space-time trellis codes for correlated MIMO channels

    Space-time code designs commonly rely on the assumption of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh channels. However, poor scattering conditions can have detrimental effects on the performance of space-time codes. We derive new space-time trellis codes that are robust in the presence of a large variety of propagation conditions. First, robust space-time trellis codes are derived when the transmitter has no channel knowledge. Then, trellis codes exploiting some statistical knowledge of the channel at the transmitter are presented. Codes satisfying these criteria are shown to perform much better in real-world channels than codes designed only for i.i.d. channels.Anglai
