Complexity of communicating social responsibility

It is recognised that organisations, consumers and businesses are increasingly more concerned with how business activities affect society. While research has explored specific types of techniques for communicating corporate social responsibility (CSR), there has not been a more general discussion of the considerations that organisations should make when determining the type of communications that should be used. This paper takes a managerial approach, discussing four broad issues associated with the communication of CSR: 1) intensity of action/positioning; 2) communicating action; 3) types of programs utilised and 4) integration issues. It is proposed that by understanding these issues organisations will be in a better position to ensure that the information is clearly communicated and understood by their various stakeholders. The benefits to be achieved will, however, be dependent on the objectives of the communication and thus it is suggested there is not one single appropriate approach to managing these issues.<br /

Understanding issue complexity when building a socially responsible brand

Purpose of the Manuscript- To discusses the importance of understanding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by analysing the issues that comprise CSR. Without this understanding it will not be possible for organisations to develop responsible brands.Approach – The paper draws on the existing business and marketing literature to define four aspects of issue complexity. It also draws on a range of real and hypothetical examples affecting local and global organisations to explain the four components.Limitations – The work is conceptual in nature and additional research needs to be undertaken to better understand how organisations define the CSR issues that they will integrate into activities and how the management of these issues can be undertaken to ensure system wide implementation.Practical Implications – The work suggests that by understanding the four components of issues complexity organisations will be in a better position to integrate CSR related branding. Without understanding these issues, organisations may potentially unintentionally exaggerate claims or set themselves up to be criticised that they are unfairly exploiting consumers’ interest in CSR issues.Value- Previous research has documented the value of CSR, but to date there have been only limited attempts to systematically examine how managers could know whether they have considered the issue completely and realistically.<br /

House Price Shocks, Negative Equity and Household Consumption in the UK in the 1990s

We examine the impact of housing capital gains on savings behaviour during the 1990s British housing market cycle using microdata from the British Household Panel Survey and county-level house price data. We condition the models on household real financial capital gains using Family Resources Survey data. We find a marginal propensity to consume out of housing wealth of between 0.01 and 0.03, depending on specification. Among our novel findings are asymmetric behaviour between periods of house price rises and falls, with stronger consumption response during periods of house price increases, and a disproportionate impact on saving if the household has negative housing equity.

This paper in based on a critical and comparative analysis done over the logic treaty (Principles of Science) and economic treaty (Theory of political Economy), which objective is to analyze W.S Jevons thoughts on his definition on inductive logic and its application in economics, taking as base the profit principle. Jevons objective is to analyze economics as a science under the proposed inductive logic methodology included in his scientific method treaty (Principles of Science). Within this proposal, the profit principal can be conceived as a hypothesis for individual behavior appealable by empiric behavior.Por meio de uma análise crítica e comparativa dos tratados sobre lógica (The Principles of Science) e de economia (Theory of Political Economy), este trabalho tem por escopo produzir uma leitura do pensamento de W.S. Building a corporate socially responsible brand : an investigation of organizational complexity

Past research has suggested that developing CSR linked brands is a complex activity that needs to consider the social issues being addressed as well as multiple facets of organisational activities. This paper proposes that organisational activities need to be considered at four different levels – corporate brand, product/line brands, location/functional activities and supply chain issues. The four activities are discussed and implications for developing CSR-leveraged brands are explored.<br /

Building a corporate socially responsible brand : an investigation of issue complexity

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is increasingly being leveraged in branding activities. This paper suggests that there are four types of issue complexity associated with defining what issues should be considered for CSR branding activities to be effective. These include the number of social issues considered, diversity of sub-issues, measurement difficulties anddetermination of appropriate performance levels. Some implications for developing CSR leveraged brands are discussed.<br /

The single-phase induction motor:a critical appraisal of the rotating-field and cross-field theories with particular reference to skin effect

Get PDF
The purpose of this thesis is twofold: to examine the validity of the rotating-field and cross-field theories of the single-phase induction motor when applied to a cage rotor machine; and to examine the extent to which skin effect is likely to modify the characteristics of a cage rotor machine. A mathematical analysis is presented for a single-phase induction motor in which the rotor parameters are modified by skin effect. Although this is based on the usual type of ideal machine, a new form of model rotor allows approximations for skin effect phenomena to be included as an integral part of the analysis. Performance equations appropriate to the rotating-field and cross-field theories are deduced, and the corresponding explanations for the steady-state mode of operation are critically examined. The evaluation of the winding currents and developed torque is simplified by the introduction of new dimensionless factors which are functions of the resistance/reactance ratios of the rotor and the speed. Tables of the factors are included for selected numerical values of the parameter ratios, and these are used to deduce typical operating characteristics for both cage and wound rotor machines. It is shown that a qualitative explanation of the mode of operation of a cage rotor machine is obtained from either theory; but the operating characteristics must be deduced from the performance equations of the rotating-field theory, because of the restrictions on the values of the rotor parameters imposed by skin effect
