    Assessing the Influence of Religiosity and Spirituality Practices on Human Resources Performances at Workplaces, Ghana

    The way workers react to instructions, devote time for productive activities and leisure, dress codes, sharing of resources and responses to organisational calls, attitudes and behaviours are determined by their religion and spiritual beliefs. These practices at the working environment will either impede or enhance productivity. Religiosity and spirituality either positively or negatively affects employee’s performance in an organisational setting. Questionnaire, interview, observation and Focus Group Discussions were the main data collection techniques used in this study. Simple random sampling and simple proportion formula were used in selecting sample size for each organisation studied. The study revealed that there is highly significant association between religiosity/spirituality and employee’s performance which positively influenced productivity at workplaces. Benefits such as commitment, honesty and creativity enhanced productivity. It was empharcized that majority of employees who are highly religious and spiritual communicate with their Divine every day before they commenced their official functions at work places. Nevertheless, the study discovered that too much religiosity and spirituality reduced productivity because working hours will be used for practicing religion. The study therefore recommend that management must designate special areas for religious activities like prayers and meditations for the employees to dialogue with their maker and organisation’s policies must be reviewed to shape religious practices and spiritual activities at work places to reduce its influence on productivity in Ghana.     A novel ruthenium-silver based antimicrobial potentiates aminoglycoside activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa

    The rapid dissemination of antibiotic resistance combined with the decline in the discovery of novel antibiotics represents a major challenge for infectious disease control that can only be mitigated by investments in novel treatment strategies. Alternative antimicrobials, including silver, have regained interest due to their diverse mechanisms of inhibiting microbial growth. One such example is AGXX, a broad-spec­trum antimicrobial that produces highly cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) to inflict extensive macromolecular damage. Due to the connections identified between ROS production and antibiotic lethality, we hypothesized that AGXX could potentially increase the activity of conventional antibiotics. Using the gram-negative pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, we screened possible synergistic effects of AGXX on several antibiotic classes. We found that the combination of AGXX and aminoglycosides tested at sublethal concentrations led to a rapid exponential decrease in bacterial survival and restored the sensitivity of a kanamycin-resistant strain. ROS production contributes significantly to the bactericidal effects of AGXX/aminoglycoside treatments, which is dependent on oxygen availability and can be reduced by the addition of ROS scaveng­ers. Additionally, P. aeruginosa strains deficient in ROS detoxifying/repair genes were more susceptible to AGXX/aminoglycoside treatment. We further demonstrate that this synergistic interaction was associated with a significant increase in outer and inner membrane permeability, resulting in increased antibiotic influx. Our study also revealed that AGXX/aminoglycoside-mediated killing requires an active proton motive force across the bacterial membrane.     Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

    Abstract Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

    Peptide methionine sulfoxide reductases (Msrs) are enzymes that repair ROS-damage to sulfur-containing amino acids such as methionine, ensuring functional integrity of cellular proteins. Here we have shown that unlike the majority of pro- and eukaryotic Msrs, the peptide methionine sulfoxide reductase (MsrAB) from the human pathobiont (Hi) is required for the repair of hypochlorite damage to cell envelope proteins, but more importantly, we were able to demonstrate that MsrAB plays a role in modulating the host immune response to Hi infection. Loss of MsrAB resulted in >1000-fold increase in sensitivity of Hi to HOCl-mediated killing, and also reduced biofilm formation and in-biofilm survival. Expression of was also induced by hydrogen peroxide and paraquat, but a Hi2019 strain was not susceptible to killing by these ROS in vitro. Hi2019 fitness in infection models was low, with a 3-fold reduction in intracellular survival in bronchial epithelial cells, increased susceptibility to neutrophil killing, and a 10-fold reduction in survival in a mouse model of lung infection. Interestingly, infection with Hi2019 led to specific changes in the antibacterial response of human host cells, with genes encoding antimicrobial peptides (BPI, CAMP) upregulated between 4 and 9 fold compared to infection with Hi2019, and reduction in expression of two proteins with antiapoptotic functions (BIRC3, XIAP). Modulation of host immune responses is a novel role for an enzyme of this type and provides first insights into mechanisms by which MsrAB supports Hi survival in vivo

    The 2022 Outbreaks of African Swine Fever Virus Demonstrate the First Report of Genotype II in Ghana

    African swine fever (ASF) is a lethal disease of domestic pigs that has been causing outbreaks for over a century in Africa ever since its first discovery in 1921. Since 1957, there have been sporadic outbreaks outside of Africa; however, no outbreak has been as devastating and as far-reaching as the current pandemic that originated from a 2007 outbreak in the Republic of Georgia. Derivatives with a high degree of similarity to the progenitor strain, ASFV-Georgia/2007, have been sequenced from various countries in Europe and Asia. However, the current strains circulating in Africa are largely unknown, and 24 different genotypes have been implicated in different outbreaks. In this study, ASF isolates were collected from samples from swine suspected of dying from ASF on farms in Ghana in early 2022. While previous studies determined that the circulating strains in Ghana were p72 Genotype I, we demonstrate here that the strains circulating in 2022 were derivatives of the p72 Genotype II pandemic strain. Therefore, this study demonstrates for the first time the emergence of Genotype II ASFV in Ghana

    Urogenital Schistosomiasis and Sexually Transmitted Coinfections among Pregnant Women in a Schistosome-Endemic Region of the Democratic Republic of Congo

    Schistosomiasis afflicts an estimated 10 million pregnant women in Africa annually. With mounting evidence of adverse impacts to reproductive health resulting from urogenital schistosomiasis, including increased transmission of HIV, further research on prenatal disease epidemiology is warranted, with implications for maternal and fetal health. Between October 2016 and March 2017, we conducted a cross-sectional study examining the prevalence of urogenital schistosomiasis and its association with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) other than HIV among pregnant women visiting antenatal clinics in Kisantu health zone, Democratic Republic of Congo. An extensive sociodemographic and clinical survey was administered to consenting participants, with urine samples and vaginal swabs collected to deduce active schistosomiasis and STIs, respectively. In total, 17.4% of expectant mothers were infected with Schistosoma haematobium, 3.1% with Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), 1.4% with Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), and 14.6% with Trichomonas vaginalis (TV). Women infected with urogenital schistosomiasis were at significantly increased odds of harboring a CT, NG, or TV infection (adjusted odds ratio = 3.0, 95% CI: 1.5, 6.0), but reports of clinical symptoms were low, ranging from 17.2% of schistosomiasis to 30.8% of TV cases. Laboratory confirmation of schistosomiasis and STIs provided objective evidence of disease in a cohort with low symptomology where syndromic management may not suffice. Shedding light on local risk factors and associated coinfections of urogenital schistosomiasis can identify unique intervention opportunities for prenatal care in trematode-endemic regions and aid in reducing adverse pregnancy outcomes
