    Computational Abstraction of Films for Quantitave Analysis of Cinematography

    Currently, film viewers’ options for getting objective information about films before watching them, are limited. Comparisons are even harder to find and often require extensive film knowledge both by the author and the reader. Such comparisons are inherently subjective, therefore they limit the possibilities for scalable and effective statistical analyses. Apart from trailers, information about films cannot reach viewers audibly or visibly, which seems absurd considering the very nature of film. The thesis examines repeatable quantification methods for computationally abstracting films in order to extract informative data for visualizations and further statistical analy- ses. Theoretical background empowered by multidisciplinary approach and design processes are described. Visualizations of analyses are provided and evaluated for their accuracy and efficiency. Throughout the thesis foundations for the future automated quantification player/plugin, are described aiming to facilitate further developments. Theoretical structures of the website which may act as a gateway that collects and provides data for statistical cinematic research are also discussed

    The moderating role of emotion management in the relationship between mobbing and burnout

    The purpose of the study was to investigate the moderating role of emotion management (emotion regulation and emotional intelligence) in the relationship between mobbing and burnout with two samples (220 nurses and 220 engineers). The reason to use two samples was to investigate and being consistent with the discussions that employees who have a non-service occupation might also experience burnout. In both samples, emotional intelligence moderated the relationship between mobbing and burnout but the effect was not in the hypothesized direction; it did not buffer the effects of mobbing on burnout. Furthermore, cognitive reappraisal which is the dimension of emotion regulation moderated the relationship between mobbing and reduced personal accomplishment/professional efficacy in both samples and cynicism in engineers but the effects were not in the hypothesized direction. Expressive suppression which is the other dimension of emotion regulation moderated the relationship between mobbing and reduced personal accomplishment/professional efficacy in both samples and cynicism in engineers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Clarifying the conceptual map of VUCA: A systematic review

    Purpose – Over the last few decades, the environment for organisations has been frequently described using the acronym VUCA: a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous environment. Despite the popularity of this acronym, it is not unusual to find some overlap concerning the meaning of those terms, as well as poor definitions of each in the literature. Consequently, the main aim of this paper was to conduct a systematic literature review to obtain a conceptual map of the components of VUCA and their relationships and to highlight some avenues for future research. Design/methodology/approach – We conducted a systematic review of various databases between 1999 and 2021. A total of 833 papers were identified and 26 of them met the inclusion criteria for the current study. Findings – The subsequent analysis revealed several overlaps and relationships between the four terms. Based on this analysis, we propose a conceptual map that could serve as a basis for future research and practice. Research limitations – Due to the exploratory nature of the study and the scarce number of empirical studies, the impact that the use of the VUCA framework has had on businesses could not be addressed. Originality – By clarifying the different components of VUCA and specifying the relationships between them with a comprehensive conceptual map, this paper may contribute to more rigorous empirical research, as well as help managers and executives more effectively deal with turbulent environments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>The electric grid in the United States has been suffering from underinvestment for years, and now faces pressing challenges from rising demand and deteriorating infrastructure. High congestion levels in transmission lines are greatly reducing the efficiency of electricity generation and distribution. In this paper, we assess the faults of the current electric grid and quantify the costs of maintaining the current system into the future. While the proposed “smart grid” contains many proposals to upgrade the ailing infrastructure of the electric grid, we argue that smart meter installation in each U.S. household will offer a significant reduction in peak demand on the current system. A smart meter is a device which monitors a household’s electricity consumption in real-time, and has the ability to display real-time pricing in each household. We conclude that these devices will provide short-term and long-term benefits to utilities and consumers. The smart meter will enable utilities to closely monitor electricity consumption in real-time, while also allowing households to adjust electricity consumption in response to real-time price adjustments.</p

    Biocatalytic electrode improvement strategies in microbial fuel cell systems

    Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) produce electricity as a result of the microbial metabolism of organic substrates, hence they represent a sustainable approach for energy production and waste treatment. If the technology is to be implemented in industry, low cost and sustainable bioelectrodes must be developed to increase power output, increase waste treatment capacity, and improve service intervals. Although the current application of abiotic electrode catalysts, such as platinum and electrode binders such as Nafion leads to greater MFC performance, their use cost prohibitive. Novel bioelectrodes which use cost effective and sustainable materials are being developed. These electrodes are developed with the intention to reduce start‐up time, reduce costs, extend life‐span and improve core MFC performance metrics (ie. power density, current density, chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction and Coulombic efficiency (CE)). Comparison of different MFC systems is not an easy task. This is due to variations in MFC design, construction, operation, and different inocula (in the case of mixed‐culture MFCs). This high intra system variability should be considered when assessing MFC data, operation and performance. In this review article, we examine the major issues surrounding bioanode and biocathode improvement in different MFC systems, with the ultimate goal of streamlining and standardising improvement processes
