    Comparison of various methods to delineate blood vessels in retinal images

    The blood vessels in the human retina are easily visualisable via digital fundus photography and provide an excellent window to the health of a patient affected by diseases of blood circulation such as diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is identifiable through lesions of the vessels such as narrowing of the arteriole walls, beading of venules into sausage like structures and new vessel growth as an attempt to reperfuse ischaemic regions. Automated quantification of these lesions would be beneficial to diabetes research and to clinical practice, particularly for eye-screening programmes for the detection of eye-disease amongst diabetic persons

    Two-phase quasi-equilibrium in β-type Ti-based bulk metallic glass composites

    The microstructural evolution of cast Ti/Zr-based bulk metallic glass composites (BMGCs) containing β-Ti still remains ambiguous. This is why to date the strategies and alloys suitable for producing such BMGCs with precisely controllable volume fractions and crystallite sizes are still rather limited. In this work, a Ti-based BMGC containing β-Ti was developed in the Ti-Zr-Cu-Co-Be system. The glassy matrix of this BMGC possesses an exceptional glass-forming ability and as a consequence, the volume fractions as well as the composition of the β-Ti dendrites remain constant over a wide range of cooling rates. This finding can be explained in terms of a two-phase quasi-equilibrium between the supercooled liquid and β-Ti, which the system attains on cooling. The two-phase quasi-equilibrium allows predicting the crystalline and glassy volume fractions by means of the lever rule and we succeeded in reproducing these values by slight variations in the alloy composition at a fixed cooling rate. The two-phase quasi-equilibrium could be of critical importance for understanding and designing the microstructures of BMGCs containing the β-phase. Its implications on the nucleation and growth of the crystalline phase are elaborated

    CFD simulations of turbulent flows in a twin swirl combustor by RANS and hybrid RANS/LES methods

    A confined isothermal flow in a Twin Swirl Combustor (TSC) was studied under both steady and transient conditions. The Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulation was carried out to investigate the timeaveraged flow features in TSC under different ratios of the primary air flow rate to the secondary air flow rate. The steady-state velocity profiles inside the combustion chamber were analyzed using both Renormalized Group (RNG) k-Îľ model and Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model. For the transient conditions, the Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) method based on the SST model was used to probe the instantaneous three dimensional (3D) vortex structures to better understand the formation of the internal recirculation zone (IRZ). The existence of a pressing vortex cores (PVC) and a hurricane-shaped vortical structure in the TSC were captured by the SAS model. The SAS model can yield vortex-level results similar to large eddy simulation (LES) prediction while saves much more computational resource.     Mass measurements of neutron-deficient Y, Zr, and Nb isotopes and their impact on rp and νp nucleosynthesis processes

For further details please see: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Using isochronous mass spectrometry at the experimental storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou, the masses of 82Zr and 84Nb were measured for the first time with an uncertainty of ∼10 keV, and the masses of 79Y, 81Zr, and 83Nb were re-determined with a higher precision. The latter are significantly less bound than their literature values. Our new and accurate masses remove the irregularities of the mass surface in this region of the nuclear chart. Our results do not support the predicted island of pronounced low α separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc isotopes, making the formation of Zr–Nb cycle in the rp-process unlikely. The new proton separation energy of 83Nb was determined to be 490(400) keV smaller than that in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012. This partly removes the overproduction of the p-nucleus 84Sr relative to the neutron-deficient molybdenum isotopes in the previous νp-process simulations.Peer reviewe

    Experimental investigation of mechanically laminated straight or curved-and-tapered bamboo-concrete T-beams

    This study echoes the rising demand for bio-based material in concrete composite structures in the race to accelerate carbon neutrality in construction. Noticing that most previous studies are focused on straight timber or engineered bamboo-to-concrete composite beams, this study developed straight or curved-and-tapered mechanically laminated bamboo-concrete (LBC) T-beams. Six layers of 26mm thick laminated bamboo panels were glue laminated together to form the bamboo beams. The curved bamboo beams have three different rises of arch: 50mm, 100mm and 150mm. All specimen beams were tested by four-point bending tests to evaluate their structural performances of the curved and straight LBC T-beams. To monitor the flange-to-web interface shear transfer, a novel interface shear slip calibration method that captures the longitudinal after-slip strain redistribution was developed and validated by strain gauge measurements. This study also highlights the interlayer shear bonding strength of laminated bamboo as the thresholding parameter that determines the composite beams' overall flexural strength, evidenced by detailed failure mode analysis. The proposed interface shear slip calibration method can be extended to the other types of shear connectors such as screws, nails, shear plates and notched connections

    Identification of electrostatic microinstability maps in quasi-axisymmetric stellarator

    Microinstabilities such as ion temperature gradient (ITG) mode and trapped electron mode (TEM) in quasi-axisymmetric (QA) stellarator are investigated by using gyrokinetic Vlasov simulations, where the QA configuration of Chinese first quasi-axisymmetric stellarator is utilized. Extensive parameter scans with respect to the density and temperature gradients for the zero beta cases identify the microinstability maps that indicate the transition boundary among ITG and TEM. It is found that, in particular for the modes with the ion-gyroradius scale, a relatively more stabilized regime appears along the transition boundary of ITG–TEM. Such a valley-like stability structure is not observed in the other cases with the sub-ion-gyroradius-scale. A stabilization effect attributed to the hollow density profile is also demonstrated

    Measurements of the Mass and Full-Width of the Ρc\eta_c Meson

    In a sample of 58 million J/ψJ/\psi events collected with the BES II detector, the process J/ψ→γηc\psi\to\gamma\eta_c is observed in five different decay channels: γK+K−π+π−\gamma K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-, γπ+π−π+π−\gamma\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-, γK±KS0π∓\gamma K^\pm K^0_S \pi^\mp (with KS0→π+π−K^0_S\to\pi^+\pi^-), γϕϕ\gamma \phi\phi (with ϕ→K+K−\phi\to K^+K^-) and γppˉ\gamma p\bar{p}. From a combined fit of all five channels, we determine the mass and full-width of ηc\eta_c to be mηc=2977.5±1.0(stat.)±1.2(syst.)m_{\eta_c}=2977.5\pm1.0 ({stat.})\pm1.2 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2 and Γηc=17.0±3.7(stat.)±7.4(syst.)\Gamma_{\eta_c} = 17.0\pm3.7 ({stat.})\pm7.4 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures and 4 table.     Measurements of the observed cross sections for e+e−→e^+e^-\to exclusive light hadrons containing π0π0\pi^0\pi^0 at s=3.773\sqrt s= 3.773, 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV

    By analyzing the data sets of 17.3, 6.5 and 1.0 pb−1^{-1} taken, respectively, at s=3.773\sqrt s= 3.773, 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV with the BES-II detector at the BEPC collider, we measure the observed cross sections for e+e−→π+π−π0π0e^+e^-\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0\pi^0, K+K−π0π0K^+K^-\pi^0\pi^0, 2(π+π−π0)2(\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0), K+K−π+π−π0π0K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0\pi^0 and 3(π+π−)π0π03(\pi^+\pi^-)\pi^0\pi^0 at the three energy points. Based on these cross sections we set the upper limits on the observed cross sections and the branching fractions for ψ(3770)\psi(3770) decay into these final states at 90% C.L..Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
